Popular Post Godzilla Posted December 6, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2014 (edited) Just started reading the comments on last night's BBC 4 documentary but stopped as I've not seen it yet. However, as these days Soul Sourcers are pretty open minded about funk, I thought it might be interesting to see what sort of funk people like. So, Deep funk, funky Northern, funky R&B, disco funk, jazz-funk, JB style grooves - whatever floats your boat - why not chuck a few tunes up to show what sort of funk you like and maybe a few lines to explain why. They can be super rare/obscure or just a well known tune that you love to bits. Anything goes as long as it's funky. If you don't like funk then that's your prerogative, but this thread is just not for you and I'll reluctantly lock it if anyone comes on just to say that. I'll start the ball rolling with the one that I definitely never tire of: Tony Alvon and the Belairs - Sexy Coffee Pot - Atlantic. It's that explosion of rock hard drums, pounding base and kick ass guitar on the intro that never fails for me. 10 seconds in and there are horns, bubbling organ and exultant shouts. What follows is an amazing series of syncopated breaks and 2 minutes later it's all over. An astonishingly exhilarating dance record. Edited December 10, 2014 by Godzilla 5
Guest Matt Male Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Love this. I just like the guitar at the back and the bongos (I think). The break is good as well. Simple, clean and a nice dancer. Groovy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Mz4CbnLN4

That record - I'd never heard of it - about 5 years ago I bought a collection and he also gave me a bag of mixed 'rubbish', Elvis, Stones, non-Northern Soul stuff like that, there was a copy of this in there! Sold it on ebay to someone in Japan. 2

Guest Rubber Soul Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 There really are SO many great funk records and artists to pick from. I just want to say that for me - there can be only one undisputable king - JAMES BROWN - for a number of reasons: *The sheer amount of great records - unprecedented. *He pioneered the whole genre. *His intensity when he sang, love those screams and grunts - SOOO copied by others. *His amazing bandmembers with all the various setups - The James Brown Band/The James Brown Orchestra/The JBs... Maceo, Fred Wesley, Jabo, Pee Wee, Bootsy, etcetera. Also the great "call and response" between Brown´s higher voice and Bobby Byrd´s darker. * When James Brown cut soul - it was funky, and when he cut funk - it was soulful! Also love DYKE AND THE BLAZERS!!! Prefer this kind of more organic, soulful funk before say, Zapp or Funkadelic. So hard to pick one, but at gunpoint I would probably go for "Super Bad", closely followed by "Turn It Up Or Turnit A Loose", "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" and "We Got More Soul" by Dyke!!

pikeys dog Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 A toss up between James Lewis Fields: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg1SFj9bOsE and Dyke and The Blazers: Although there are 100s of Funk tracks that I love, but can't get on with a lot of the current so called Funky Northern... 3
pikeys dog Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Also, if you aren't particularly aufait with Funk, you can do a lot worse than picking up a copy of The Sound Of Funk Vol1 on Goldmine. I worked in a clothing / record store in the early 90s, and we sold about 50 copies of the LP, because it was quality from start to finish. 1

I'm the same - I prefer the harder stuff than the stuff that get played as Funky Northern - although to be fair, I heard some stuff at 100 Club that turned my head last time I was there. That James Lewis Fields track is just a surefire dancefloor winner though isn't it?

Popular Post Godzilla Posted December 6, 2014 Author Popular Post Posted December 6, 2014 Now I know this isn't for everyone However it's been a big want of mine for ages and I managed to get a copy at a decent price earlier this year. Julio Gutiereez was a band leader, composer and arranger from Cuba who made some really influential recordings in the 50s and 60s. On this 45 however it sounds like he'd got hold of a sound effects record and decided to use as much of it as he could get away with. The result is one nutty tune! I love it because it kind of captures the craziness of a big city: during the course of the record you hear what sounds like alarms and sirens, a break in, a hold up, a shoot out and some hookers plying for trade - one of whom, if I'm not mistaken, is a transsexual. I listened to it six times straight when I first heard it - much to Mrs G's delight (not...) It's manic, a bit all over the shop, but as funky as hell and in all honesty not like anything else I've ever heard. Turn it right up - and hold on to your seats! The Sound Of Julio Gutierrerz - Fun K City - Vico 4

davidwapples Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Probably a daft question but why do a lot of funk tunes reference a "Jody " in the vocals , is this refering to someone or a slang name for someone ? , seems to have heard quiet a few with it in for it to be a coincidance
Godzilla Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Probably a daft question but why do a lot of funk tunes reference a "Jody " in the vocals , is this refering to someone or a slang name for someone ? , seems to have heard quiet a few with it in for it to be a coincidance Think we've done this before, but here it is anyway: it's the guy that stays at home when everyone else has gone to war. Naturally he'll mess with your woman...https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Jody 1
