Phew ! Glad that's over. The point I was making was that I can happily drink all night without drinking to excess and getting drunk. It's not a question of volume, it's a question of pacing what you do drink

Nowt to do with the film it's been going on for the last few years,ask the dj's who have been abused at night's for not playing "Our Lasses Favourite".Since when did we mix with Joe Public?For most of my adult life they looked down on me as some sort of leper for travelling all over the country to stay up dancing all night,why all of sudden do they want to join me.I keep reading "well I suppose we'll to put up with it etc". NO WE F*CKING DON'T,get them told,tell them to abide by the etiquette of our night's,if they don't want to show them the door preferably head first .They don't just join up & dictate how it is.

I'm glad I was in a great little room with 50/60 like minded soulies who travelled far wide to hear dj's with passion ply there trade.........wonder if Joe Public has ever done that.

That's actually a good point as I too would like to see younger people in venues, it is about the balance of letting a crowd in who look potentially interested and spotting the wide boys who are just there for a late drink and to give it the big one. It's also having door staff on hand who can spot knobheads and if after a few choice words they don't behave can volley them off the premises. The only instance of something close to hassle at Lifeline I've seen was a daft lad knobbing around and annoying dancers. Mick H dispatched him in seconds. Normal service resumed. 

 

It's very hard to Police - I don't like the fact we have doormen nowadays, I remember when they were first used on a regular basis, and lots of us didn't like it.

 

I don't have to, but I choose to have a doorman at 'Lennys', and his instructions are to ask anyone he is suspicious of to name a couple of Northern Soul venues. But if he immediately sees anyone as 'outsiders' - if youngun's, he says it's an over 30's disco, or if older, he says it's a private party - You need doormen that understand our Scene a bit (most are pretty good on this after a brief description)

 

Northern Soul is for everyone, so as I said, it really is difficult to Police - The main thing is that if a 'situation' occurs, it is dealt with quickly, and professionally.

Sad to say I was at the Unity and have posted my comments on the past Events page. The Unity Hall has been seriously revamped and renovated to avenue that has few better on the UK soul scene. 

Unfortunately it's located  now on the worst spot imaginable in 'Wakey' ie Westgate, home to the infamous 'Westgate Run' and I can image the joy that the Handbaggers/Divvies/Zombies had when it was announced that there was 'Northern Soul' all-dayer on Saturday on Westgate, piss-up heaven.

 

The local pubs, Black Horse I was told across from the Unity, was cashing in on the day (who can blame them in this dog eat dog world) by having cheap beer £1:50 a pint and playing 'soul' music

 

The place was magnificent, dance floor brilliant no need for talc floor like an ice rink, climbing the stone stairs with polished bannisters was like stepping back  30/40 years in time ........................................then we were confronted with the handbaggers/piss artists/zombies/stiletto puppets-on- a string/ which totally took the gloss of the night ........................can put up with he queues for a drink but the Richard Craniums who totally ignored the DJ's pleas for 'no drinks on the floor please' should be shot with excrement. I got to think how much 'soulies'  miss places like the Casino, Torch, Wheel etc, and when a place like the Unity rise like a phoenix from the ashes and is trying to regain a place on the soul circuit to be totally abused by Kn..b H...d Ethel/Elsies'/Doris is beyond belief. 

 

Unfortunately the Wakefield of 38 years ago is no longer the place we have now especially Westgate and I think it was inevitable that the night would be 'crashed ' by handbaggers as was pointed out by a previous poster.

Going to local soul events that are well supported and attended, Drax, Eggborough, Manhattan, etc the location of these places means that only serious, dedicated and true officinardos  of the soul scene make an attempt to get there and it is rare if at all that the 'happenings' that occurred on Saturday at Unity occur here.

My heart goes out to Malc Burton for his efforts to promote this and to be rewarded after 38 years with shit from certain'people' is a sad reflection on modern day society

He's always been as sober as a judge, perfect gent & good company.

Secret is Dont let them in. having a few traps set could help.Example a few grids outside the entrance with wide gaps for snapping stilletoes. A few handbag thieves working for the Soulies could help thes problems to a minimum. then the Scallies have no skirt to chase. problem solved I Hope. just don't let them in.

A lot to be said for the smaller more intimate venues.More control over who comes in,what's played.Like minded folks turning up,respect not an issue.Feel for MB,but its a risk all big venues take now i guess.

I think social media and the internet may have added to the problem.  At one time, the only way you would know about a soul do would be if you went to one and picked up a flyer.

 

Whilst the internet is a marvellous thing, a search for northern soul on Google will provide event details to anyone who want to come along to have a look.  Personally, I think this surge of morbid curiosity from people wanting to know what all the fuss is about, will pass.  It hasn't been helped by "the film", it was never going to was it?  I'm still not quite sure why it was made.  I think the tourist types will drag themselves out for a look for a while and then get fed up of it all.  Give it a couple of years and the furore will have died down I hope.   I keep my love of northern soul to myself most of the time.  The only way to keep the numpties out is to make sure they don't know about the events!

 

As for the shenanigans with tickets and sell-outs, badly managed events will, in the long term, not be supported.  It's business!  You have to give the customer what they want, or they won't want it.

D J ing on the south coast a few years ago , an influk of handbaggers & knobheads hit the floor in a circle , you can spot them before they hit the floor , anyway after several polite requests " no drinks on the dance floor please " and some proper soulies asking them to abide by my request , I just hit the stop button mid track and announced no more music till they removed their drinks ...........success, as they all left the dance floor very sheepishly with the soul fraternity clapping as they left ......job done

I like the idea of deterent.

The DJ could play uptempo tunes (Terrible Tom, Lenis Guess, Carl Holmes - soul dance, Intruders - check yourself etc).

A trap set for the high heels and piss head brigade, just add uptempo tunes = multiple injuries eg sprained ankles.    Whoops....... I almost forgot - get the camera rolling and £100 could be yours from "you've been framed" and you have the added comfort of exposing the spoilers on national TV for what they are.
