Hi Mark

Pretty sure she was on post-76 as I think I saw her there and I didnt start going until 77 mate. The tracks also suggest latera s I was certainly there the first time Searling spun Betty Boo & Cecil Washington as Joe Matthews. Have you got that Wigan Casino book? should tell you in there - I'll have a look later.

Defo 78/ 79....... she forgot the words to " one way out" & had to start the song again, cant lay me hands on Dave shaw`s book but that will have all the details in.

Poor performance from what i remember but i`m not a fan of live acts.

She must have played twice - I think the first was january 78, I watched it from the balcony - but Cecil Washington wasn't played until after I'd stopped going, neither was Don Ray, so she must have made a second appearance in 79. Actually Mark I've got a tape of it as well but it's got the date on so probably easier to find that out.

Almost correct Garv,

The crowd wanted her to sing One Way Out which was MASSIVE during that period 78 ish. She announced that the girls backing her didn't know the song and that the band hadn't rehearsed it. She than sang a couple of verses a cappella to the backing of the crowd's handclapping. Great moment. I remember the rest of her performance as top notch too. She still had the pipes then. Great lady, who always has time for fans. I've seen her at least a dozen times. For me she's THE archetypal 60s Motown femme sound. Always will be.

Dave

Your right blush.gif it was an acappella moment, i thought i read that she had been practising

" one way out " specially for the Wigan show. Not knocking her as an artist or singer just did`t do it for me.Ive got some old Black Echoes/ Blues & soul somewhere & i think there`s a review of the show in one of the them, was this the show where the drummer had to use chair legs for drum sticks .......... or is that another Wigan myth / rumour :D

'Tis true, she sang it acapella and yes, she was there twice. Posted these pictures before but thread seems to have been deleted, so here they are again (second night - taken by me).

Just one point of dissension Dave.

One of the backing singers was male, which we all thought a little odd.

It was a truly awesome performance. The atmosphere prior to the concert was like a cup final - the crowd chanting "1 Way Out"

On top of that I actually managed to pull a girl from Widnes. I wonder where 'Ava The Raver' is now?

I would say it was probably '79, as I didn't go to Wigan Very much as I had joined the navy in 76. I was there for Martha though and I remember my mate with me and that would place it very late 78 but more likely early 79.

I only ever went twice after August 1978 and I saw Martha!

This will sound like bollocks but I'm sitting on the balcony above and to the right of her, me, Phil Lowe and Kev Evand watched it from there, right at the end of that balcony, and it was the only time we ever sat there - reason being, I had 3 speckled blueys and couldn't actually walk properly :P that was when they'd just come out and nobody knew how powerful they were.

One was march oldies 1979 and the other was the last night!

I know I did go to an oldies at this time so this could have been it.

Strangely for this Martha gig I was also at that side of the balcony but at the back corner. probably for the first time. Don't know what gear I had! :P

Actually Pete, me and 2,000 others were trying to take your picture - but this crazy singer and her band got in the way!!

I have some Jr Walker at Wigan pics somewhere - where you there that night too?

Yeah I was, and bizarrely I can remember where I was for that as well, it was the only time in the entire year I didn't have any gear - had been busted by parents so I swore if they let me go, I wouldn't take any, and I didn't - I was near the back at the left sitting by a guy called Lewis from Runcorn who some may remember, he was there every week. That was the best live show I ever saw at Wigan by a mile. I taped it as well, lent it out, never saw it again.
