John Drevar's Expression The Closer She Gets C/w When I Come Home

A British Pink & Silver Grail!

The PINK is so glowing, the scanner fails to pick up its brilliance - but I can assure you if you win this summit of Rare British Northern Soul collecting, don the Raybans before opening the packet - an eye-popping experience awaits - would be an understatement!

British only and so elusive the “NS Bootleggers” were unable to secure a copy to meet the demand. So as an alternative in 1979 some obscure singer freshly recorded it. So do not confuse in anyway this potent Johnny Harris production of a Teddy Randazzo, Richie Adams & Victoria Pike composition, with dreadfully inferior version from the Nottingham based Destiny label credited to John Drevars. There is absolutely no comparison..

Before you today is a tune that DJ’s in the 70s were so proud to own and even more puffed-up to play. Overloading dancefloors every time it was played…

There is no bootleg of it or even a respectable alternative version - before you today is THE REAL DEAL with totally immaculate vinyl.

This listing is in honour of the NS contribution DJ Nev Wherry made during his all too brief twin-deck-career. Here’s to you Nev I remember cl;early your enthusiastic introduction and the crowd reaction when you dropped the needle on this tune at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens… immense!

M. V. P.'s Turnin' My Heartbeat Up

NORTHERN SOUL THE MOVIE

Featured not quite so much as “Time” but certainly iconic Wigan Casino as it headed the timeless mid-70s Granada TV “This England” documentary.. who could ever forget those opening vibes as the molten iron slides from the ladle…those instantly recognizable vibes ring out into “Turn in’ My Heartbeat Up..”

A Northern Soul classic now for 40 years - still packing the floors everywhere, we thought this would be an ideal Christmas gift for an old-school Casino member, especially as it’s in neat perfect condition…

How much do you love your man?

Idols Check Her Out C/w Why Am I So Blue

One of the seriously RARE U.S.A. label Northern Soul creations.

A barrage of brass crashes into violent drum whacks whilst the racing harmonized vocals become more and more euphoric as they annouce “Baby’s Coming Home”

A relentless 2 minutes of proper-classic-style STOMPING NORTHERN SOUL!

But do not overlook the fine street-corner harmony ballad on the flipside, raw and decidedly impressive..

RARITY is such that this 45 sits comfortably in the top 5 least-seen, most-wanted amongst the labels plethora of obscure and very limited presses.

Condition of both sides could hardly be finer..

Edwin Starr Time C/w Running Back And Forth

NORTHERN SOUL - THE MOVIE

From the toilets of the Youth Club the murky Tick-Tock of the intro could just be heard above leaky toilet cistern, slowly getting louder. He re-enters the dance space and BOOM! Edwin Starr is full-on blasting out TIME!

That pivotal moment when “one” record captured your imagination and you are enamored..it’s that goose-bump experience, that spine tingle shiver that hooks you into a life of searching for music that ignites that rare sensation.

For me it was Al Kent’s - The Way You’ve Been Acting Lately - steadily getting louder as I climbed the wooden stairs into the Trent side “BRIT” club in Nottingham but for many it would have been “TIME” or something similar; just like the youngster in the movie, you were sent on a journey that for the majority has become a lifetime quest..

I thought NORTHERN SOUL - THE MOVIE encapsulated that “sense of being” completely…

Go See It… but don’t expect to see the ultimate Green and White DEMO spinning on the turntables…especially a flawless one.

PS the flipside is “Crazy About Crossover” Heaven..

Heti Lloyd Soul Sister C/w I Met A Guy

You are about ran over by an out-of-control runaway vocal of Heti Lloyd a street-level Texas Sister who vocal is perfectly matched to take on an almighty Tsunami of horns and does a Marva Whitney as she outstrips them

The sassy Heti Lloyd surely does pack a punch, carried with attitude and the backing male vocals stand back out of her whirlwind presence, as she hits those high notes with consummate ease. A very convincing piece of Deep Funk with inspiring Northern Soul moments in the chorus.

Deep Soul fans will appreciate the slow-drag flipside again supported by a blaring horn section that is drown by that all-powerful Sister’s pipes..

Mickie Champion What Good Am I (without You) C/w The Hurt Still Lingers On

Straight from the USA - certainly this listing has never endured the rigors of the Northern Soul circuit since 1976! This copy is a NS Virgin, vinyl forensics only reveals the light of sleeve brush blemishes, both sides play perfect.

Forget Wigan Casino, this was a total monster at Cleethorpes Pier; a girder-warping dancefloor-destroyer with few equals. Unleash that soundfile and imagine 50 foot about the freezing waters of North Sea turbulence, 100s of NS devotees were stomping their hearts out to pure POWER!

Still 4 decades on it has exactly the same affect on solid ground, an instant igniter of the dacefloor rush… as that low-blow sax vibrates your back-teeth and Mikki’s squealing vocal style pierces your bones and demands MOVE (and you’ll be treated to skyward trumpet blasts as you dance!)

Today I know many of you “get off” on the sultry Beast Ballad flipside..also totally dominant in its own way.

Two great sides.. with little or no human contact..

Sandra Wright Midnight Affair C/w Wounded Woman

An extravagant encounter with a proper Diva Dance Soul!!

Only available as the seldom-seen STOCK copy on the flipside of an equally impressive mid-tempo Soulful Stepper, both sides enriched by a brilliant brass section that screams Memphis!!!

Both sides for decades have graced the turntables of the more discerning Soul dancefloors; Soul Essence, Just Soulful, The Orwell etc. etc. Places where the accent is placed on the vocally endowed and musically gifted.

We lead with the tough to find “Midnight Affair” as Sandra Wright waits for the horns and the piano to set the scene.. then like a Big Cat, she purrs, whines and pleads for late night liaison. Who could resist being taken off to her den, certainly not me; the thought of Sandra’s sighs, as my alarm clock makes me nearly forget the full blown dance experience she’s delivering…

The other side is just as convincing - as the feelgood backing deceives - as Sandra struts into the arrangement with pouting defiance and looking for revenge..again with the horns decorate an already fabulous tune and lifting it into a “must own” rating..

What a voice, what a woman, what horns…

Major Lance I'm The One C/w Pride And Joy

NEVER ISSUED IN THE USA as a single!

UK EMI try and cash in the the British Tamla Motown 1965 explosion by digging back into the Okeh catalog to release this 1963 Chicago session of Marvin’s Gaye - Pride And Joy - and in doing so unwittingly discharging a stunning version of the much-loved Impressions recording “I’m The One Who Loves You” entitling it as an abbreviated “I’m The One” it is a tune that most may have overlooked.

Personally I love these one-off executive decisions that create real oddities and rare 45s that would otherwise just sit in the vaults or languish, without DJ-love as an album track.

Take a listen to “The Major’s” version, it is a truly fabulous take on the Curtis Mayfield creation, benefiting from the artists so familiar unique voice and style.

Before you today is a Red & White DEMO with flawless vinyls - gleaming labels who’s only foible is a half-hearted attempt to neatly “score” the NOT FOR SALE text - check over the scan carefully it is minuscule and rather insignificant in the historical story of this “UNIQUE” British 7”’ other exclusive Northern Soul.

Doris Duke I'l Make A Sweet Man C/w What Will Tomorrow Bring

A Legend In Her Own Time!

Since I first heard this Diva’s phenomenal voice on Dave Godin’s Blues & Soul recommendations, I have wondered what would Doris be like on a dance recording; as her Deep Soul offerings are unparalleled, which her two standout Mojo albums will testify.

I had to wait a decade or three, as until recently this Massachusetts D.I.Y. label was mostly unknown but debuting on our auction today, we can now revel in Doris’s mighty vocal spewing out a fabulous rare-soulful-dance groove. She certainly loses none of her penetration on this rich horn & string production. Delivering that expressive lyrics, exquisitely manipulated like only she can.

So listen to one of the greatest female Soul vocalists ever attack upbeat dance production, but if you need reminding how superior Doris handles the Deep Soul ballad, just flip it over and it’s like old times, dropping a late night needle onto a Mojo LP and falling into a soothing Soulful abyss.

Yes, certainly a “Legend In Her On Time” and this his by far her rarest recording…

James Shorter Modern Day Woman C/w Ready For The Heartbreak

This weeks sleeper, or should we say snoozer… comes on one of Soul’s most-wanted labels, so saturated in distilled emotion. It is hard to believe this disc has never hit the dizzy heights of the labels other NS giants.

Listen and you’ll be incredulous too, as The Masqueraders back up James Shorter’s beseeching vocal, who along with wailing girl group who together take this downbeat recording into an eerie cavernous atmospheric place that defies all the rules of Northern Soul.

In the case of this records, it is the flooding emotion you’re dancing to not the beat.. real-deal Soul can do that to you.

Like it meaty?

Just turn it over for a deceptive bluesy intro, then BANG you’re pulled into a relentless slab of Motor City Northern Soul with the Masqueraders adding depth and richness to this proper-NS-dance groove…

Change your mood..just flip it back, you’ll not hear another NS tune carrying that alluring but ghostly depth of sensitivity… genius!

Shane Martin I Need You

Some consider that Paul Anka - I Can’t Help Loving You - is POP and I’ve heard Shane Martin - I Need You - is too.

My opinion is Colour of skin and a previous artists recordings do not count for anything when Artie Schroeck is around. He is after all the common denominator with these two Northern Soul Monsters that have endured for decades bigoted snipes from collectors and NS purists who may think that it elevates themselves in some weird way to collect records by selected skin shades.

Certainly NOT Pop but two top-drawer examples of total Northern Soul that only the likes of Mr. Schroeck could manufacture from a session.

Shane is currently enjoying a huge Northern Soul renaissance being one of the most-requested tunes of the moment. Rightly so, it was a floor-packer mid-70s and is still having the same effect today.

So when a rarely seen yellow stock copy surfaces, we feel auction will ensure it safely ends up in your man’s Christmas stockings.. the morale being, never judge a song by colours, and never judge a man who wears stockings during the festive season.

But do judge label colours and condition… yellow stock copy in fine clean condition is no easy disc to find

Arin Demain Silent Treatment

Discovered in Pittsburgh 1977 to become an iconic Cleethorpes Winter Gardens last in the set play, to rise from that lowly position to high priority on collectors wish lists - and remained there ever since.

The “Cleethorpes” DJ habit for playing something really slow and soulful as their exit disc, started out as an “in” joke because the next DJ would be playing to a nearly empty dance floor, which was all in good fun to begin with. But when Tony Middleton’s “Paris Blues” rose from Beat Ballad stroller into dancefloor packer, the search was on for similar discs to spin last.

Enter “Ernie Lucas” with a perfect candidate, by any standard of the time “Silent Treatment” was a slower than the norm, but shimmered with so much “Real Soul” the appreciation grew and grew so that this disc joined “Paris Blues” on the DJ most-wanted lists..

Today after decades of fruitless searches and challenging quests of trying to grapple a copy away from the few known owners, or sniping a copy on the internet, ended in total frustration for most all who have tried - in short this is one thoroughly Soulful 45 that is damn-difficult to purchase…

especially in this near new impeccable condition…

Esquires My Sweet Baby C/w Henry Ralph

A briefly released in 1972 on the UK Action label and highly sought-after rare # to find in the series. But insignificant by comparison to this the original USA that so seldom comes to market.

So check out this play perfect slab of Chicago vocal-group Northern Soul gazing back at you, from its original company sleeve, looking totally gorgeous but paling against the top-drawer NS dancer that lay in the grooves.

This Gilbert Moorer and Bunky Bill Sheppard session exceeds even their high standards of production, with a this horn peppered harmony NS Crossover dancer. The trademark falsetto lead, glides on top of the purring harmony choruses with those horns subtly blasting out with perfect timing, crafting a fabulously Soulful Dance tune.

This could easily transmit itself in a top tune,as it has been hidden from view for far too long, an under-the-radar beast about to break surface..

Funkers may well dig the quirky dancer on the flipside..

But, all and Soul-sundry will fully appreciate the eye-popping label scan, rare distributors sleeve and the exceptional music it projects… potential is glaring!

Tommy Rodgers I'll Tell It To The Wind C/w Pass The Word

A Northern Soul rising star of the moment.. offering not one but two sides of sumptuous NS dance.

It was not too long ago that “Pass The Word”, the stompier side was the recording being hunted, but back then, it got lost in the avalanche of better NS recordings entering the country at the time. It seems in our haste for the new discovery, the flipside got passed over. Boy, did we miss a real feelgood tune… until more recently an enterprising Jock flipped it over and now it now features on many a DJ wish list.

From the very first lilting guitar pluck you know you’re about to hear a slice of class. A mid-paced winner unfolds on a wave of strings, piano, precise plectrum licks, all supporting a gravel-coated at ease vocal supported by a controlled girl group chorus… lush!

Over time tastes change and this builder just creeps up, right under your skin to leave the less subtle, formerly endorsed side behind in its wake…

Quite brilliant really.. and you will, just like did, find yourself dropping the arm on this delicacy more than once.

Bit pissed about the Shane Martin.  Someone nicked mine out of my Box while I was on the Decks one night a couple of years back.  Fortunately I've still got my Pointer Sisters Lol !!

Almost quadrupled in price in 2 years

£40 for mine 3/4 years back    :)  Hasn't this gone for double this auction price in recent times ?

Was it a Stafford spin ?

I bought a James Shorter for €30 last week.

£161.00! really? Its just lazy record hunting that. I love a good laugh at these prices though. Some people love spending too much money on records, I love them as cheap as possible.
