Some we can recall, may or maybe not mentioned.

Played probably in the last couple of years or so.

Marty Lewis  I can't do without you  Big Deal.

Wil Collins  Anything I can do  Bareback. ( Love Committee  Cover Up )

L. Allen  Can't we talk it over  Green Dolphin.

Nomads  Somethings Bad  Mo Groove.

Velvet Hammer  Happy  Soozi.

Charles Johnson  Never had a love so good  Alston.

Just remembered this one too, from a bit earlier.

Leon Thomas  L-O-V-E  Flying Dutchman.

Still own or owned all these, at one time.

And still love them now.

Marty Lewis was a real favourite. Seems long forgotten now.

Velvet Hammer sounded great at the Casino.

Sadly been hammered to death, since being revived a few years back.

Really enjoyable reading back through this thread.

Some great memories, of the best of times.

This was a big spin in the closing days of the Wheel. I played it to death at the Magnet in Oldham during 1974, and managed to get it spun in M's quite a lot later that year. It wasn't long before it began getting played "downstairs", and most thought it a new discovery. Glad to see that it obviously continued to be a popular tune long after I departed the scene. Great record.

Some good records being mentioned here - I seem to coming up with the more "questionable" one's!

So....how about The Camp and "Marching"....to compete with my Tim Tam addition!

OK I'll play! It's pretty poor, agreed. But as bad as that TimTam abomination? No. Nowhere near as bad! 😂

Sheer quality. Oh to be able to dance properly again to this. Great memories of 73. Sticking with the Triumphs, mustn't have heard this played anywhere since that first year at the Casino.

I don't think any are forgotten though are they, all are staple soul scene plays IMO. Happy has been played constantly then as you say got hammered on the back of Ferrel Williams for some reason.  Not just your selection though, a lot mentioned are far from forgotten.

Will Collins,      main room heaven.

So we've got seventeen pages of records, many of which aren't forgotten and are still played regularly, many of which were never monsters, and many of which weren't original Wigan plays.  Keep them coming!

Countless Records were massive at many Venues back in the day, and nothing in the thread title said  'original' to Wigan.

The OP specifically put Wigan in the thread title, and he didn't expand on this in his first post.  I know he used "etc" in the title, but he might just as well have named the thread "Forgotten Monsters" and left it at that.

..... and because the OP Specifically put 'Wigan ETC Days' which without splitting what's left of my hairs, I would take to mean anything from that period. Where as Just leaving it at 'Forgotten Monsters' Could be any track from the last 50 years.

So there's nothing from the Wheel or Torch been listed here?

Quite a few Wheel and Torch tunes listed in the thread. Just happens that the majority of contributors dont know them as that, and actually think they were first played at the Casino. But hasn't that always been the case? You only have to look at so-called Wigan Casino Story compilations, and you'll see "Looking for you", "Happy", "I can't get a hold of myself" etc. etc. all listed there, when they were all Wheel tunes.

I even saw a sales ad on this site recently that made me chuckle out loud. A seemingly respected seller had listed Otis Smith "Let her go" for sale, and described it as an "classic early Wigan floor filler". It wasn't. Yes, it got plays, as many other tunes fo that period did, but it was TORCH monster, from eighteen months previously. It certainly wasn't as popular in that first year at Wigan as Moses Smith, Duke Browner and Earl Wright still were.

Boom 💥 still gets played at the fleet

Boom indeed. Quality sound. Played prior to September 73 though! Can't recall it being that big in the early Casino days, but did it get more plays later on?

just went on 20 seconds too long at the end

Still prefer this to Homers version, just. But again, a Wheel, Catacombs and Torch tune to me. I never heard it played at Wigan between opening night and the end of 75, not even in M's, so am assuming once again that it was reactivated in the late seventies?

Joey - gonna say 76 or 77 think they re released it / pressed it along with Shane Martin / Lyn Randell / French fries on that EPIC red label - we all associate sounds with different venues - Camp Marching is St Ives Soul Sam - Tears Leroy St Ives - Rain out of my mind St Ives - although they were played at I guess all the major venues - great memories and great times

I completely  agree that we all associate different tunes with different venues and different times. Its what it is I suppose. If it was reissued then, it was well after I'd left the scene, so had no idea it had become as popular as it had been several years previously. As you so rightly say though, for all of us, at completely different periods in time, happy days indeed!

I know it was first played at the Cats, but Pete always talks about how this used to bounce off the back wall. Maybe not forgotten but...

Yeah, definitely a Cats tune, from earlier in 73, but funnily enough, it ALWAYS reminds me of that first year at The Casino more than anywhere else. As you say, when played in the main room, it used to make the place jump.

I think basically your right mate. But realistically no Wigan monsters will ever be totally forgotten as if the tune was a monster then there must be loads of people who still remember the tune. Its all subjective and as previously stated depends on Your age,the venues you attended,When or if you left the scene for a period.Regionally some records that get hammered are lesser played at other places.

However i think this thread has thrown up a boat load of records that many posters have said they have not heard for several years so they are forgotten in that respect.

At least it got us talking about records and its given us all a lot of enjoyment along the way.

It's very rare these days that I hear something played out and say to myself......"Bloody hell, I haven't heard that for ages". I don't think it's a case of long forgotten, more that they don't fit into the tried and tested, well established, call it what you will, playlists that get churned out week after week.  You're even subjected to the same records repeated by different DJs on the same night.  Some of the records posted have put a smile on my face and brought back great memories, others are probably best forgotten.  "A Lot of Love", posted earlier today, took me back to the main room at Wigan circa 79/80, and stomping for all I was worth, but it still gets regular plays.  Tamala Lewis, less plays, still invokes memories of Station Road for me, but not quite in the "haven't heard for ages" category for me.  Like you say, could be a regional thing, and obviously depends on how often you're out and about and what venues you attend.  Some stuff gets "reactivated" whether it deserves to or not, whilst other stuff very rarely gets an outing.  After seventeen pages people are having to really dig deep to come up with truly forgotten monsters from the Wigan era, and I'm sure there's a lot of "repeat plays".  Still an interesting thread but not all records mentioned fit the original brief.

So Rain - out of my mind was credited to Soul Sam at the St Ives venue?

Maybe somebody should chronicle when where and by whom!

Just remember it being a floor filler at the Cleethorpes Winter Gardens all nighters.

Once folks like John Anderson were importing a box or two of a certain tune, skimming off half a dozen to 'associated dj's'  it's hard to credit that record to anywhere but Kings Lynn!
