Is there really a need for that? This forum is about music.

In no particular chronological order, and a mixture of excellent, and the good bad and ugly from Wigan; all were big though, and some beyond huge! Some are just plain funny.

Little Joe Romans (Still super rare)

Night Owl (Nothing was bigger than this mid 70’s at the Casino!)

Danny Monday (Likewise this)

Wakefield Sun Trypt on love

General Assembly Sensitive mind

Detroit Landapples

Ollie Jackson Day my heart stood still.

The Jewells

Construction

Lamont Cranston Band

Colouredman

Gary Lewis My hearts symphony (I kid you not!)

Baja Marimba band Along comes Mary

Paul Peek Im movin uptown

EJ Chandler

Jackie Forrest Show me how to love

Lindy Stevens Pennygold Decca

Johnny Vanelli

Lou Roberts (All)

Deadbeats No second chance (Probably more speculation about this as a cover up than any other RS record ever.... rumoured to be the rock group ‘Whitesnake’ at some point!)

Seeds Pushin too hard (horrible horrible record but huge for Russ)

Trade Martin She put the hurt

Cherry People And suddenly

The Poppies Pain in my heart

This thread is about forgotten Wigan monsters sounds isn't it? I doubt any of the records you listed are forgotten.

Posted (edited)

Before my time, but one of my all-time favourites (Moses Dillard - maybe only actually heard it a couple of times at nighters myself) and dodgy pop shite (that I also have a soft spot for) - both actually pretty much forgotten though which is what the thread is SUPPOSED to be about. Was going to add Verdelle Smith too, but I thought that was just too offensive : )

Yeah mate,

I know; coming from a man who’s managed to go more off the topic of ‘forgotten monsters’ than anyone here, thats funny😂

For me the ‘forgotten’ issue is largely about forgotten by the dancers and forgotten by the collectors. Some Wigan monsters are 4 figure records and still talked about and lusted and danced to (e.g Salvadors, Eddie Parker, Frank Wilson etc etc). But most of those I mentioned are not talked about or particularly danced to relative to their former huge status.

When was the last time you heard Pennygold played, or Cherry People? Youd kill a floor with some of those records now. Try get a full floor to Nightowl.... impossible; collectors arent interested either but mid 70’s at Wigan that record was king; hence the ‘forgotten’ tag for me. Dont worry about it though Steve; drop another ‘green n clear’ n let it all float over your buzzing head!😄😉

Only jokin mate; its all good👍🏽

Great record. Very much in the vein of the Blossoms , When the tears start. Love the girlie sounds

Steve

I Love the girlie sounds too Steve.I think that in the last couple of years there has been an upserge in popularity for some of the lesser played casino sounds and often its these sounds that seem to get the floor going.Frank Lyndon,Joey Dee,thelma Houston,Ron Holden all do well for me these days.

Also this one Steve one of the best Girlies ever

Can't remember it being played any earlier than the beginning of 74. Monster tune back then, covered up as Detroit Land Apples, "Help me" I think? Used to completely fill the floor in the main room, and remained a biggie for the rest of the year.

Definitely still a monster when I started going mid 75.

Nearly Joey, covered as the "Detroit Shakers" early 74? Mr Soussan must have been very impressed with that cover up name, here is the Rainbows, also bootlegged around the same time as...

Yes and mug punters like me who bought it this thinking it was The Outsiders boot, only to be dissapointed the next day at home to find out it was this (and how many times did that happen to us? - Could be a good thread if not already done)

You are Sir, absolutely correct of course. Totally different tune to the Detroit Land Apples. In my defence, it was a VERY long time ago, and my mind at the time was usually somewhat fogged. So many booted in 73 & 74. Even at only a quid a pop, no-one I knew could afford to buy all they wanted. Must have been ten a week being churned out by those nice Nottinhgham people.

Oh, and someone previously mentioned the instrumental to "Lets spend the night together". I remember it being sold in Raplhs Manchester, late 73. But did anyone actually on here it ever get played anywhere? It was complete dross, even by the standards of the time.

I know what you mean Joey, 3 or 4 titles a week back then - I  have never heard 'Let's spend the night' - L.A. Power and Light wasn't it? - just Soussan being a bit cheeky I reckon!

Here though is the Detroit Land Apple's - now this is a forgotten/under rated tune..

I've just done a search of the thread and can't see this mentioned, although someone may have just posted a youtube link and a few words. So, just in case it's been missed, here you go....

(And if it has been mentioned, it's got to be worth a second one!!

Quality instrumentals were ten a penny back then, eh? Really good tune.

And yeah, LA Power & Light were the perpetrators of that abomination. I first heard it in Ralph's, possibly late 73. Got the young girl who worked there to spin it for me, and it was a REAL WTF moment for me. Total dross. Can't recall the label, but pretty sure it was dark/navy blue in colour?

Heres another forgotten instrumental from early to mid 74. If you close your eyes you can still hear and feel the handclaps. Lol.

Was this actually played at Wigan? Really? Must have been WELL after I quit the scene. If Russ or Richard had spun this in 74, they'd most likely have been prodded several times with something sharp and pointy. It really is quite dreadful. Please, make it go away. PLEASE!

From memory, it was a big play in 1977.

I assume that the "sharp and pointy" thing you refer to would be a lethal injection!!!!!!!!

Quit the scene in late 75 in disgust, so fortunately missed out on just about all of the real garbage.

The sharp and pointy thing would have been something a tad more primitive, and carried by very many of the dodgier members of the scene back then!  😂

More like 79 or 80

It got slagged off at the time of being played by the majority of soul fans, and represents just about the lowest point in the desperation to find new uptempo Northern.

Although obviously not there at the time, I can easily understand and agree regarding the lowest point etc. I really can't think of anything I ever heard quite as bad, and I've heard LOTS of crap over the years. I can just imagine Russ, stood there, thinking to himself, "If Cockell can play You're Ready Now at the Wheel, I reckon I can get away with this one". 🙂
