Wasn't Bob Seger the JC Messina Time Won't Let Me, that sounded like Bob Seger singing off chord, it disappeared just as I started due to being bootlegged. I only remember that as guy in my class bought it, he was buying big records while at school, for £35 I think, and it was booted within a week.

it wasnt ian martin was it ,i think that was his name if remember he had everything that was big at the time

No a chap called Kenny Dunn, from Bonnyrigg, he was buying big records at school, along with another guy from BonnyRigg, Ricky McManus. Both had very good collections at an early age.

Ian came along later, and was a bit of a protege of Kennys, but he did take ti to a whole new level, with many of the current big sounds. Searling was very helpful to both I think, probably due to his friendship with Bruce who ran Clouds.

Between the three of them though, they had unbelievable collections for relevantly young lads. Ian sadly no longer with us.

Nu-Rons followed by Cheryll Berdell Pete!  What's not to like! ;-)

Cheers,

Mark R

I said to Pete on this, I could sing the Lammarr Thomas c/u if anyone asked me, loving it back in the day although it wasn't totally popular, and can even remember how you could hear sound of pods shoes soles sliding along dancefloor to it, I could sing Nurons obviously as always loved it. Just never connected it was the same F****g record till now! How mad is that!

I thought the Combinations was covered as The Chessmen "like I never did before"

& the Royal Esquires was covered as The Embers "Playing the part of a fool"

Could be wrong ? .......Where's Flynny when you need him.

Triode

100% right mate, I actually didnt get the Combinations the first time, I kept singing it all the way through trying to get to real title as knew I would get it then, but of course the Like I Never Did Before line kept jumping to the front and the memories of the acceleration of your heart and feet at the same time to that blocked my memory, in different ways from back then  :D

I went to bed, put light off, and of course it jumped right out, I got out and sent it to Pete, knowing he would have known all the 60's wanted to get my street cred back on track. But forgot to correct the c/us.

Tell you what I still have a Royal Esquires but very rarely play it, listening to that again in context actually made me realise it really is one of the greatest Northern records, ever. Really quite magnificent, and moody in all the right bits, and bang. You are back there.

No-one found Searlings lasts spot? Its definitely on Echoes and it used to be referenced on various sites here, would be interesting to see again. I do seem to remember him just closing his box and going, but again that may have been bathroom gossip my memory is presenting as a fact?

Found a couple of old threads on here Jocko but they don't really have a full track listing - they're all in bits.

Richard mentioned this thread on his solar show yesterday and said he's gonna do a show near xmas based on this playlist.

Should be worth a listen

fabulous!.....that's coz i told him about the interest steve,..he obviously decided to have a sneeky look  he is genuinely chuffed that there's so much interest...but then he also knows that he is still held in such high regard..imho. anyway, goes without saying..he can definitely still put a good 95% of that list together so don't doubt it if he says he will do it....wish he had judy hughes!! :(

She Devil? It was always played off a 7". When Sam played it at Clouds Bruce, the promoter, told him to take it off half way. Awful record, I have a 7" somewhere in the depths if you want to offer a large amount for a never known before to exist 7"

Sam was/is never adverse to having a 7" cut done of CD/12" or album tracks to lay in his sets, bless him

there you go, that answers other threads about cutting carvers and weather anyone should play them or not...if it's good enough for sam....i follow the ethic that if it's unreleased/from a cd or even an lp track...what is the problem, especially if the lp track has never coincidentally emerged as a single and probably never WILL.but, we'll carry on arguing about that on "the other threads" in the meantime, get those files back up mike

Don't want to end up off topic, so just one comment on this from me.

You can't have it both ways......the original is CD, the vinyl is a copy........what would you say if I played my 7's off CDR? I'm pretty sure that would be frowned upon.

What's the difference? Is it about vinyl or original format?

For other threads really....

great point made by mark . i dont know the answer . big fan of sams sets over the years . it just seemed strange to see him selling cdrs at gigs . and also to go to vinyl only gigs where jocks are playing  tunes originally out on cd, put onto carver . why not just use the correct format.  vinyl and cd.  its a funny old game this soul lark!   as a punter i just want to hear and dance to the very best soul music , not too fussed about the format. [ although its always nice to have it on vinyl ! DOH.    ok ill shut up . to get back on topic . i think one of the points that strikes  me about  the strength  of richards music  are the brilliant tunes you forget about  .  like the gifted four track -  are you choosing . that paul reminded me about .[cant stop playing it on youtube] . i went to a lot of the gigs richard was doing in manchester  after the casino finished . some not very long lasting or particularly well supported but the music was always the very best small and major label soul . the electro movement was big in manchester at the time , he ignored that and just played the very best soul. same when house came along. remember getting a lift up to  stafford   TOTW  and listening to some of the jaw dropping stuff he had lined up for the radio show.  it always makes me  smile  when he says  " its the best thing ive ever heard "  cause you know he means it .  mind you his taste  in  football is a bit questionable .

Yes indeed james, Ian Martin had a lot of the big stuff back then, and then some - as I said previously, going to his house on a Thursday night was a great apprenticeship in what was 60's newies at the time - he had Al Williams, Rita & The Tiaras and countless others that Richard Searling was playing - bloody amazing it was

ian was good friends with Nev Wary (spelling?) at the time (another no longer with us) as well as close to Bruce, searling and pat brady

He ran his dad's newsagents at the time ( must have been dipping the till !) and I still drive past it every day taking my kids to school

I remember my first Clouds all-nighter in Edinburgh, spent the first few hours in Ian's house then off in the train with David Goldie (AKA Poo Goldie) and john Nielson, only to be chased by punks when we got to haymarket station !!!!

That was the first night I had "chalkies" - 6 of them - bloody great night - lol!

Ian definitely had an incredible DJ collection at that time - probably 1979/1980 - not sure whatever happened to his records when he died?

wish i had made it north of the border to those clouds nighters. everyone speaks so highly of them . [any dj  playlists available for them. ]  on the subject of being chased by punks i remember being randomly selected for a search  at  wigan wallgate station on one of the anniversary nights . by the time i got out my mates had done one and left me to run the risk down station road on my own !  wigan could be a hostile world for soulies . caught an elbow off one of the punks but managed to spin off and leg it . when the pubs were coming out you had to watch yourself . used to get off the train at ince if it was a decent night and walk it to the casino or go in the nearby flats . would have liked to see a bit more of that in the  northern soul film . it was literally like a pilgrimage.  for me the walk from manchester  piccadilly  to victoria station . meeting soulies along the way. on the platform various ghetto blasters heightening the excitement  . people swapping and buying records . all those different accents . some a little bit difficult to decipher.  and then the total opposite the morning after .  the 2 hour wait for the train back to manchester . sometimes going in the legendary baths to kill a bit of time . sure it was the same which ever part of the country you were coming from .. just wish the the film had gone a little bit more in that direction , the importance of the music and the people rather than a heavy concentration on the drugs thing.  just being picky they got so much right . the attention to detail and the 70s feel was spot on .  loved that line  " look at him he's dancing like a f##king tea pot." had a mate that danced just like that.  and the reaction of the lads in the car when someone knocked on the window with the dance competition trophy . priceless .  i know  ive gone off on one  . sorry .  p.s funny place wigan. came out of the orwell once at the same time as  arthur fenn. both our cars had been broken into .  they took a high viz works jacket out of mine .and nothing else.  nicked arthurs butties and left his  laptop. ?       SHORTY.

having read the list, as he did and then contemplated "yes i'm gonna do this on my show", i;'ll bet he had a hairs on the back of the neck experience and got pretty excited about it, which i'm sure , anyone would from a purely mostalgic point of view.

Right, he does play Tommy Ridgley, he even announces it after he's played it before going into The Inspirations, so it is Richard playing it, not some substitute, the tape is uncut.  I can't make out what he is calling it though.  If people still don't believe me, I'll put half an hour of the tape up.

If Richard can't remember playing it, trust me it doesn't mean he didn't.

It might not have been even his record, people used to bring records for him to play and if they sounded all right on the headphones, he would give them a spin.

Very true. Remember goin to the Casino with Brian Waterhouse. We had a few sounds with us. Brian asked Richard to play one. Perigents....Lets get into something....Maltese. He listened to it over headphones. Played it. About 5 of us danced to it. Never took off. Pity I really liked it at the time.

Further to the above, I was talking to Richard this afternoon and this is what he had to say regarding Pete's recording:-

"This is becoming a bit like the Twilight Zone.....

I've seen the thread, which is great stuff, initiated by Pete Smith.

On last Sunday's Solar show I denied ever playing the song HOWEVER it is me back announcing it as 'Bobby Robinson' back on September 29th 1979 at the Casino.

Did I have it covered up...or was it another "Handwritings on the wall" ,ie a white test press with just a title and no artist?

Pete S is 100 % adamant it was played in my set that night....was it handed to be by a collector who wanted me to test it out perhaps?

I would not normally ever have done that though, unless the collector was well known to me for knowing what was what?

So, to summarise - yes I played it, but crucially I did not say it was by Tommy Ridgeley.....odd?

I suppose it maybe could have cleared the floor and I sold it on quickly?

I'm getting dizzy here with all the possibilities!!

Have a great Christmas everyone and remember my show on Solar Radio, Sky Channel 0129 Sundays 16:00 - 18:00"

So there you have it. Richard doesn't recall playing it back then, but its clear that he did.

He wasn't familiar with the record, it was covered up, hence the 'fade in' and back announcement.

And as has been suggested, it possibly may not have been his record.

Cheers,

Sir Dickie in his pomp. Awesome records.

My favourite DJ by far.

It's funny what you hear, (i Know for a fact i would have danced the whole way through this spot, so i would have danced to these records) and what you remember I was there that night (I know that as i went 3 years running) But as much as i now love The Demures......don't remember Dicky playing it. Having said that, don't remember him playing Holly St James, funny i do remember it getting played, not by Dicky. 95% of the othere records I remember being played for the first time....The other thing i find suprising is i would have thought he was playng some of the "modern" stuff by now Cheryl Berdell, Top Cat, Over the Top, Anything i can do for you, I know Phylis Hyman came out in 79 ....interesting.

Pete thanks for the memory jerker

I reckon that would have been slightly later, can't remember such things being played in late 79 and I didn't go in 1980

I remember Richard did play records that were brought up to the decks sometimes .Was stood up there on two occasions when Mick Smith brought up records to play ,Eddie Parker on Awake [ Richard said " I remember this from The Torch ] and Frankie Beverley " Because of my heart " , which was a Rouser copy I recall .So maybe the same thing happened with Tommy Ridgeley ?

Yep, I think that's most probably what happened here Eddie.

Back then with so many new things turning up it was a regular occurence. I remember taking Shirley Karol 'Just To Make You Happy' on Dakar to an early Wigan and asking one of the DJ's (can't remember which one) to play it. It was dismissed immediately as 'too funky'... and he might well have been right for the time.

So multiply that situation over the months and years I guess it's easy to see how Tommy Ridgely got lost in the fog, as someone elses 'Bobby Robinson' cover up.
