Are There B Sides You Still Haven't Played?

Back in the days of stompers only, if I flipped a 45 over and in the first two seconds it didn't explode I never played it....oh dear what an ignorant oaf! Today, probably over 30 years since I bought it I played the B side to the Marvellows `I Do` called `My Heart` - what a gem! Any similar admissions out there?

Ha!Ha! I bought so many thousand records when they were out in the '50s and '60s that I probably forgot to play many of their back sides.  As I don't know which ones I didn't play. I may never play some of them.  I may be in for some pleasant surprises, IF I ever retire (stop working). 

 

I'll never be able to afford to stop working, but if I go blind, or my hands shake too much to draw, then I might be forced to stop, or just write stories dictating them to Dragon, and having that programme write it in computer files.

Totally guilty. I thought I was so sure of the sound I liked, I barely played a single b side in years of buying, same went for the other tracks on 'one track' lps.

really ignorant behaviour but on the plus side, when I eventually got round to listening to them, it was like getting a pile of free records.

as already mentioned, vibrations is the obvious one but found some great deep sides which I now prefer to the side I bought the record for.

sign of a maturing taste I guess.

still doing it though, pulled an obscure sonny knight out my sales box the other day and listened to the flip 'the quiet man'. Had the thing years and never even played it and I love it.

A few years ago I flipped the "Invitations - You're Like A mystery - MGM", which I'd had for years, filed away as a "version" of the Belmonts, really pleased and appalled at myself when I flipped it over to find "Watch Out Little Girl"

funny, what different people and generations get from the same records. I only ever knew this for the 'Watch out...' side, and when I started playing it, hardly anyone knew what it was, despite the record being well known.

Similarly, I bought Troy Dodds and Tobi Lark for what were at the time their lesser known b sides - the Northern flips were the neglected sides for me.

 

Speaking of which - Manship's  got that Tommy Rodgers on his auction and I'm sure he's got it the wrong way round in his blurb - surely it was first played, with no great success for it's trad northern sounding side 'tell it...' and the side it's in demand for now is the Pass the word side...?

I started collecting without any attachment to any kind of scene so I've always played both sides of records to see what side is the best. And I always get a little annoyed when sellers post audio of only one side of a record

I have many confessions of this nature, but the most painful is not flipping Bob Relf until Rob Wigley told me about "Girl, you're my kind of wonderful" - missed out on a great record for about thirty years!

 

Then there was Mikki Farrow, Len Jewel and oh so many more.

Played at Queens hall Bradford, Wilton, in fact was it not a Gary Spencer/Carl Fortnum play. Not heard B side but not many Northern tracks can

Absolutely, KevH slapped my wrist about 10 years ago and told me to always play my b-sides

Still getting round to it, I'm going through my collection, playing both sides and recording them to iTunes (where the b-side is good enough ) only up to G at the moment but got loads of examples I could list.

Probably the worst example I can think of is that I had a copy of Jimmy Mack (only a soul galore pressing) for 30 years and never played Go On……….

Records were generally released with uptempo one side and mid/down-tempo on the other presumably in the hope that DJ's (upon record release) would play both plug and other side and promote their choice.

I still love going back over records, giving the other side a listen and realising that after all this time the track I wasn't so bothered about sounds so much better now!

The interesting thing about "Northern Soul" was that during the '70s, when they were playing ONLY "stompers". the Northern Soulies seemed to almost invariably play the "WRONG" side.  They were almost alwats playing the "B" side, when the ballad oe mid-tempo side was the one played on the radio. was the "hit side", and the one I liked better.  Of these, Phyllis Brown, The Moovers, Trutones, and Ultimations were the charted sides.

I'm very guilty when it comes to flipping a record over and giving it my full attention. There are so many fabulous double siders that I've bought over the years for the semi unknown flip but shamefully I've missed out on some fine 'B' sides out of sheer ignorance and am only just discovering how double special some 45's are. It's a necessity in my house being married to a man who thrives off playing the flip before the known side so it's a must 'do' for me now especially with so many flips being the classier play!!

Depends which era Mik.

 

Early 70's 'Pass The Word' was a bit of an uptempo, cheapie, no hoper, but some years later I played the flipside 'Tell It To The Wind' out at the Windmill and other places (late 70's / early 80's) and although it sat well amongst what worked at the time, and a few of the Rotherham crew appreciated it, it still didn't really take off to any great degree.

 

I think 'Pass The Word' has been the favoured side in recent years, but pleasantly surprised if 'Wind' is starting to become popular again.

Having owned the bootleg for 30 odd years and original for 15 plus years on getting another

copy of Herbert Hunter - I was born..... and due to my new policy of playing both sides I was

staggered to hear 'Push away from the table' for the first time.  What a mug and what a great

record, sounds just right for todays audience. Thing is I played it to Mr Rushton and a well known

Midlands collector and they didn't know it either, which does make me feel a tad better.
