Mark S Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Nothing suprises me any more I think that Northern soul the brand belongs to the public let em have it , but the Northern soul scene belongs to us still . People can do what they want I will still get out to events and play my vinyl at home and hopefully be seeking out quality soul music long after this current fad has moved on . 1
Quinvy Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 When was that ? I fished for Gaswise liverpool for 7 years. Spent twenty years fishing the northwest canal circuit . Stevew You must be pretty handy then Steve, they are a very good outfit. We probably never crossed poles as I fished in the Lancashire winter league, and fished for a Yorkshire team for years. 2
Popular Post Drewtg Posted November 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 12, 2014 I'm more concerned Wigan allows scooterists to drive around with no hemets on! Bloody scooters again! What have scooters got to do with Wigan? I went for eight years and never saw one, and I didn't see any mods (mod's?) either. Arrivistes! 4
stewmac Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Video showing people having a good time nothing else , too many Victor Meldrews complaining for me ! 1

Thinking back now, I just lived for it and I wonder why I did it all? I think I have an obsessive disorder. 1

You wouldn't dare ride a scooter to Wigan or anywhere else in those days. They used to get stolen for fun back then. We once went on ours just up the road to Burnley Cats Whiskers and my mates scoot was vandalised. I had my Lambretta stolen twice from outside my girlfriends house. There was a huge black market in stolen scooters in those days.

spot Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 (edited) Before we get too hung up on dance lessons it's not exactly confined to this scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNACcfLRABk Loads of these videos on YT. See also shag lessons. ROD But Rod those lovely Black Ladies actually look cool doing it & have rhythm & style, unlike the Uk versions that look like the Douglas Bader dance troop. Spot. p.s. i've just watched it again and I love em all, they're just so COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited November 17, 2014 by spot 3

We once went on ours just up the road to Burnley Cats Whiskers and my mates scoot was vandalised. I had my Lambretta stolen twice from outside my girlfriends house. There was a huge black market in stolen scooters in those days. Well I only ever saw 2 or 3 scoots there from 79 till the end.. BUT... In the winter of 1980 , I went to Wigan on a lambretta. I picked my mate up from Pelsall near Walsall (Timmy Thacker). , and in the freezing cold, we rode all the way up the M6, 80 odd miles , and it even started to snow and sleet . we were going flat out at 55 mph and had to stop at every services else we'd have froze to death. My scoot was a 1969 GP125 id bought for £50 dragged out of a neighbours shed.. we had no AA, no tools or mechanical knowledge , but we made it ... Went down a one way street in Wigan ( the wrong way) and cars flashing us , then got to the Casino, we leaned the scoot against the wall on the side of the Casino cus the stand was broke. I remember the place was nearly empty, just a couple of hundred there, it was a crap night really, and the next morning, my bike was still there, and we had to bump start it outside . The exhaust cracked as we got on the M6 and it was deafening all the way home and losing power.. nearly got wiped out by a few lorries, but made it home... I can still picture Timmy on the back with his leather bomber jacket shivering. we were only 18 and it was one of the madder things ive done.... But we did it... and every time i see Timmy , he says "remember when we went to Wigan on your scooter mick ! " 5

Pete S Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Check this video of a so called "Northern Soul Dance Workshop" to train the dancers for the Galleries video I don't blame the kids but the Tutors and the Galleries Manager should be ashamed Some of the kids are definitely getting it but the whole point is that it's about INDIVIDUALISM and not f*cking line dancing, everyone does not or did not do the same dance, most took a style and put their own spin on it, so this is why dance classes like the above don't work. 3

Drewtg Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The scooters didn't arrive til the end - last year or two, post Quadrophenia I think…Agree up til then you never saw a scooter at Wigan Casino. Exactly! I met more gays at Wigan than I did mods, does that mean it was a BIG gay venue? It's starting to annoy me now (Meldrewish I know). What is a mod anyway, someone who wears old-fashioned clothes and likes old scooters?

What they need is to turn the lights right own,and have some scary fooker with X-ray glare wandering among them.Get some atmosphere going.Far too nice. When did this become about having fun.?? 1

Northern Soul Uk Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Just addeed my comment to the video' Makes me laff cos it was Wigan council who closed the Casino down because "There were plans to build on the site"? Then it caught fire, mmm? So this is like a "Look what we killed in Wigan" tribute. 1
Guest Bearsy Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Bloody hell! I can't believe I get slated for a spelling error when there's some on here that can't put a cohesive sentence together. And I don't need any lessons on coarse fishing, I used to be a bit of a canal ace actually. I actually read that last bit as "I used to be a bit of an anal case" sorry Phil I think I need lessons too

El Corol Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Does anybody on here remember being young, fecking about and learning about new things? Did you all walk through the doors of VaVa's, Mecca and Wigan with full on soul knowledge and being a full on serious soul head (maybe former Wheel and Torch heads etc are exempted here?) or was part of going out about having a laff as as well as about the music. Don't get me wrong I struggle with the "line dancing" and all the baggy nostalgia scene, but young kids having a laff dancing in a shopping centre is not the end of the world in a year we remember 100 years since the start of the 1st world war. Perspective people! 1
Gerry H Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 It wasn't Wigan Council who did the video it was the Manageress of the Galleries Shopping Centre She approached the local Soul Clubs to get involved, but no one would work with her when she wouldn't take on board the advice she was given Non of the current councillors or staff have any connections with decisions made over 30 years ago and as responsible adults let alone councillors who wouldn't try and close a venue that was responsible for a massive increase in robberies to chemists, vehicle theft and where the majority of folks attending where taking speed and I speak as someone who started going the Casino in 1970 and participated in the above One of the local Councillors promotes one of the longest running local Soul venues which attracts folks from all over the country and has promoted local Nighters Although the Twisted Wheel was originally closed because the local authority and police decided to withdraw the licence that allowed Nighters to be held folks appear to conveniently forget this and decisions made in other areas but keep going on about Wigan Council.. Most folks are also unaware what was in Gerry Marshalls lease from the council but quote and rely on Chinese Whispers The video is crap and as someone who is active on the local scene I can tell you none of the locals who are out n about are happy with it Check the video of the so called "Northern Soul dance tutor responsible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot20zOkq5Wg#t=18 is that how you dance fook me i been doing it wrong all these years 1

dedji1955 Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Check this response the Galleries have left on Youtube We’re thrilled that so many people are viewing our Northern Soul video. Although some of the dancing in the video may not be strictly Northern Soul style the students at Wigan and Leigh College and the other dancers who were involved in the video embraced the style of music and dance - we think they did a fantastic job! We approached many Northern Soulies that go to the local clubs and although they expressed interest in being a part of the video unfortunately they didn’t come to the filming day. This was a project by The Galleries Shopping Centre with support from Wigan and Leigh College and Wigan Council. We wanted to reinvigorate Northern Soul in Wigan and introduce it to generations who may not know about it and its significance in the Wigan community in the 1960s.

Wars are more likely to start if people impulsively follow or tollerate banal cultural trends like a pack of sheep instead of thinking about the true meaning of things, so you could argue it either way. And I do remember being a kid, and I was cooler than I am now and wouldn't have been seen dead doing silly dancing in a shopping mall. The antidote to the bad things in life isn't triviality ] "Well, you could say that no one can complain about or criticise anything, because it's not as bad as the first world war. Illogical argument." Well I concede that by adding the comparison with the First World War I was trying to highlight that in the scheme of things the shopping centre video doesn't really figure too much (for me) as something to worry about because life can throw shittier things at you than that. I think I should have owned my comment instead of making a generalised statement. So I can see why you have written what you did. I don't advocate or argue that should be anyones approach to life. Although I do think there is some logic to thinking like that as many people do try to contextualise/absorb/deal with things that happen to them in their lives by comparing and contrasting with other people/events/situations etc. Its the "it could be worse......." type of thinking. It can be useful, but has its limitations. I agree that the antidote to bad things in life isn't triviality, but don't we need some triviality sometimes? Just as light relief from the BS of life, I know I do (and i'm not saying that the shopping centre video is my idea of fun or light relief). I think it is crap when things are seen publicly that caricature the soul scene (or whatever name people want to give it) its just some rile me more (or less) than others - The One Show being an example of one that riled me more!
