Popular Post Davetay Posted November 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 12, 2014 This the same Wigan Council that did so much to save the club back in the day, NOT!!! 5
Guest Byrney Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Kind of fits with the nice, cuddly, okehy cokeh nostalgia scene image of Northern Soul. Just glad the film had a bit of grit about it to try and counter this sort of banal 'that's why Russ shops at Iceland' crap.
Steviehay Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) Well f**k me paul just posted my thoughts on this and boom all comments disabled wigan council facing the back lash cannot take the truth typical politicians hiding again........now its been put back must of seen my post coming lol Edited November 12, 2014 by steviehay 1

Stevie Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Don't know why people are shocked over this. For years this scene has been a parody of what it once was. One or two there who looked like they may have attended do's in the past and attempting some 'serious dancing' are the ones who let it down. The rest looked like they were just having fun. 3

Popular Post dedji1955 Posted November 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 12, 2014 It wasn't Wigan Council who did the video it was the Manageress of the Galleries Shopping Centre She approached the local Soul Clubs to get involved, but no one would work with her when she wouldn't take on board the advice she was given Non of the current councillors or staff have any connections with decisions made over 30 years ago and as responsible adults let alone councillors who wouldn't try and close a venue that was responsible for a massive increase in robberies to chemists, vehicle theft and where the majority of folks attending where taking speed and I speak as someone who started going the Casino in 1970 and participated in the above One of the local Councillors promotes one of the longest running local Soul venues which attracts folks from all over the country and has promoted local Nighters Although the Twisted Wheel was originally closed because the local authority and police decided to withdraw the licence that allowed Nighters to be held folks appear to conveniently forget this and decisions made in other areas but keep going on about Wigan Council.. Most folks are also unaware what was in Gerry Marshalls lease from the council but quote and rely on Chinese Whispers The video is crap and as someone who is active on the local scene I can tell you none of the locals who are out n about are happy with it Check the video of the so called "Northern Soul dance tutor responsible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot20zOkq5Wg#t=18 4

Popular Post Hooker1951 Posted November 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 12, 2014 Dedjis right the Casino changed its name from the Empress ballroom circa 1967 it held regular soul nights before the all nighters started in 1973. On Sunday and Monday evenings and from 8pm till 11 pm on Saturdays before the beer monsters came in.at the same time as this the Beachcomber underneath had soul nights on for the under 18's Wigan had ALLNIGHTERS running from 1963 the Bluesville club which played R n B Then the Room at the Top club which played Northern as we call it now Stax and R n B the Room was similar to the wheel music wise an d ran parralle to it until 1969. Paul-s Posted November 12, 2014 Author Posted November 12, 2014 Check out there tight historical perspective to: https://www.dance-dynamic.co.uk/html/dance_northern_soul.html Northern Soul is loosely defined genre of music designed to be a catchall term for rare Motown, Chicago and New York soul singles played by British DJs of the post-mod, pre-punk subculture during mid to late 1970s in northern England. A continuation of the mod lifestyle of the late 1960s--which combined a working class wardrobe and ethos. Northern Soul is a mélange of typically black American music and dance moves with the energetic spins and drops that would later exemplify the United Kingdom's house music scene. 1

Frankie Crocker Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Fantastique. Made me smile seeing the locals out having fun. Maybe Wigan's finally waking up to it's musical heritage. Time to re-build The Casino and incorporate a National Museum perhaps... My late gran used to dance at The Emp but The Casino as we know it started in September 1973. I hope the Christmas shoppers will be boogieing around to the sound of piped Salvadors, Jades and Lou Pride this coming festive season...

What a load of pretentious twaddle, lifted no doubt from some media undergraduate's coursework. There are so many errors in these three sentences, they should be deleted.
