Rick Cooper Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 On Mastermind BBC 2 tonight (Friday 7th Nov) specialist subjects include Tamla Motown and Dusty Springfield. Could be interestingRick
Chalky Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Got them all! I missed one as couldn't hear but got th rest. 1
Guest chrislokeh Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Got them all! Poor bloke had a nightmare.... easy he was shit
Andy Rix Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I only got one ... the Mynah Birds question ... the others were way too difficult Andy 2
MrsWoodsrules Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Didn't know that Neil Young ever signed up for Motown, interesting that. That guy in the chair was cr@p, even I got more than him.
Johndelve Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I couldn't hear the last question about the Temps but think it was incorrect. Didn't it ask who replaced Eddie Kendricks AND Paul Williams ? Clearly if so, the answer wasnt David Ruffin.....
Shsdave Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I couldn't hear the last question about the Temps but think it was incorrect. Didn't it ask who replaced Eddie Kendricks AND Paul Williams ? Clearly if so, the answer wasnt David Ruffin..... Exactly On another note Gladys Knight & the Vandellas ? poor bloke, surely he must have known it was Diana Ross ? 1
Shsdave Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 What were the questions then? With her group The Vandellas who had a hit with ....& I can't remember what track they mentioned & he said Gladys night Supremes previous name .....pass My minds gone can't remember Richard sorry, check on I player, it's quite early on in the programme
Steve S 60 Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 What were the questions then? I think the last question went something like this..... After leaving Motown, Gladys Knight had a top 20 UK hit with the Van McCoy produced....der der der der der...I'll come back and finish what I started....
MrsWoodsrules Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I recorded it, so here goes. What the name of former boxer & record store owner who founded Tamla in 59? Which song by Whitfield & Strong gave Gladys Knight a number 2 hit & Marvin a number 1 hit in the following year? Under what name did the Supremes first perform in 59 while they were a sister group to The Temptations? Which song gave the Four Tops their first number 1 in 66? Who co-founded the Marvelettes and sang lead vocals on many of their hits including Beechwood 45789 & Too Many Fish In The Sea? Jackson 5 five first hit on Motown, Berry supervised, number 1 USA & number 2 UK? Who was the former secretary had hits with the Vandellas called love is like a heatwave ? What instrument did Marvin play on Please Mr Postman? Who had a hit with My Guy? Beatle invited her to tour with them? What was Neil Youngs band called that signed for Motown, until lead singer arrested for draft evasion? Which 72 film did Diana Ross receive an Oscar? Who was the record producer that married Berry's sister Gwen and joined Motown in early 60's? What name did Berry give 2648 West Grand Bvld? Displayed on a sign out front? Who replace Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams as lead singer of Temptations after My Girl till 1968? He got 6 right. 1
MrsWoodsrules Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Jeez I know, and that's his specialised subject, wouldn't want to know what he has vague knowledge of if that's specialised Mind you, easy to say that when you are not in the hot seat I suppose, I bet you can just freeze up.
Frankie Crocker Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 He got 6 right. To coin a catch phrase, he should go to Soul Source more often...
Frankie Crocker Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Got them all! Rob, what's your general knowledge like? Should we put your name forward for next year's Mastermind? Any other specialist subjects you could offer?
Guest Matt Male Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) I recorded it, so here goes. What the name of former boxer & record store owner who founded Tamla in 59? Bloody hell, even I know them, all but the Neil Young one and Marvin's instrument on Please Mr Postman. If he's a specialist, what does that make us? I suppose it is easier said than done though, must be different on the spot and under time. Edited November 7, 2014 by Matt Male
Guest Dave Ward Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I did ok too, but I wasn't under the spotlight and I'm not that big on Motown. There was another guy a few years ago, with the same Specialised Subject and I found it easier to answer the questions. If I can beat the top score after all the rounds combined, I reckon I'm not ready for the old folks home....yet !
Garswood Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Got em all apart from the temptations question ?? And I'm guessing that marvin played drums ??
Robbk Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Got em all apart from the temptations question ?? And I'm guessing that marvin played drums ?? Drums is correct. Temptations question is confusing because it states "after My Girl" . I think they mean David Ruffin, but maybe they should hace worded the question a different way.
Davenpete Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 (edited) Apart from the Neil Young one (which neither me or Pete knew) - an absolute doddle - I even predicted what three of the questions would be before they came on - never thought they'd have anything as stupidly easy as the Berry Gordy question. The official Temps question answer was just wrong as far as we could work it out from any angle. Dx PS Does anyone know him? Edited November 8, 2014 by DaveNPete
Robbk Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Wasn't Neil Young in The Mynah Birds (along with Rick James)? They had a release scheduled for VIP, but it never came out.
The Yank Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 By the time the Mynah Birds signed to V.I.P. , the group consisted of Rick James, Neil Young, John Taylor, Bruce Palmer and Rick Mason.
Guest MBarrett Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 This might be a bit pedantic but surely the Neil Young question should not have been included if the specialist subject was Tamla Motown as opposed to the Motown Record Corporation.
Robbk Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 This might be a bit pedantic but surely the Neil Young question should not have been included if the specialist subject was Tamla Motown as opposed to the Motown Record Corporation. Quite right!
Mark B Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 It won't have been his true specialist subject you are given choices because if you went through each round you would be answering questions on the same subject so the contestant nominates some different subjects and then has to study them. So him getting six was probably okI would have got less but then again that's because I don't particularly like Motown
Agentsmith Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 didn't see prog and won't i player anyway as questions already posted here...would it be too much to ask if the answers were posted anyway as well just to clarify matters? deffo wouldn't have got mynah birds and a couple of the others not sure...
maslar Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 The problem is that in these high pressure situations the questions can sometimes be too easy and that can lead to hesitation. I would think it's pretty easy for some people to just go to pieces if things start to go wrong. It's one thing sitting at home, its another sitting in the Black Chair knowing a few million people are going to be watching you. 1
