Popular Post Dave Thorley Posted November 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2014 Last week I at long last got to meet the elusive Garrett Tilford aka Tim Mungford aka Abul-rahman Al-qahhar Ibn-Duriyah, the man behind the amazing 'I'm leaving you' & 'Stop him girl'. Like many I have always wondered why a Louisville group would call themselves Detroit Sounds Of Friction. Well it transpires that the group was originally from Detroit, but never recorded anything there. By the time this was recorded none of the original members remained. Both sides were recorded in Louisville and used all local musicians and singers for the tracks. Garrett started life studying classical music and played in the U.S. Army orchestra and band playing flute. After leaving he played with several jazz greats including Bobbi Humphrey. He join DSOF in Detroit but the band was short lived and started to fall apart, he moved back to his home town of Louisville, keeping the name. Garrett plays flute, key boards and drums on the tracks. In recent years he has struggler with health issues and more recently has found Islam and changed his name. Louisville is and was a very tight little musical community, many bands and records from there share connections through musicians including, The Fabulous Moonlighters, Nite-Liters, New Birth, Baby Leon Northern, DeBow, Cliff Butler, Jerry Green, The Heartbreakers and Mind Liberators to name a few. 1 17
Guest Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Thx dave, as usual great research on the artists and interesting stuff! Thx for sharring!
Dave Thorley Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 As an added aside The Fabulous Moonlighters regularly played in Indianapolis at the Blue Eagle club, where Jimi Hendrix would sit in with them and play. Hence the label name for some of their releases. When they disbanded some of them went on to form The Nite-Liters with Harvey Fuqua
Still Diggin Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 GREAT STUFF. I take it they just sold it local and that was it. Was there a follow up in the can?
Frankie Crocker Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Great story Dave. Well tracked down. Not sure if I've heard this played out. Which DJ's are spinning it?
Lovemusic Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 The question is, does he have the master tapes and is there a chance it might get a re-issue?
Dave Thorley Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 He no longer has the master, but a re-issue could be done from a clean copy. Was originally played in the early 80's when John Anderson found a bunch in a Louisville distributor he bought out. Was first played by Arthur Fenn, then at Stafford and other venues of the time.
Ted Massey Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Searling also had a copy, Soul Bowl sold it around the time you sold up had it on the list for 150 quid along with the Combinations on Kimtone and Rosie Jones on Wicket. what year was that Dave?
Dave Thorley Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 (edited) I sold all that stuff around 87, Ted Edited November 6, 2014 by Dave Thorley 1
Dave Thorley Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 Christ 27 years I know Ted, where has all that time gone. I remember putting on the list that many of the things for sale were rare and would continue to be, how true that turned out to be.
Becket Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Great story Dave. Well tracked down. Not sure if I've heard this played out. Which DJ's are spinning it? Played out by Carl & Maria Willingham. Cheers............ Tom. 1
Guest Awake 502 Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Searling also had a copy, Soul Bowl sold it around the time you sold up had it on the list for 150 quid along with the Combinations on Kimtone and Rosie Jones on Wicket. what year was that Dave? I remember being down at Soul Bowl and saw the record on a pile as it was on the weekly list for the next day. John wouldn't sell it me that day, so made sure I was first on the phone the following day.. £12.00.... Played it at Cleethorpes etc but never really took offin the early 80's...
DtheD Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 So were they all white Dave? and was he trying to sound like Jerry Butler!

Dave Thorley Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 AS I SAID MANY TIMES BEFORE, THIS WAS A ALL BLACK GROUP. DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS WHITE GROUP THEORY CAME FROM, BUT IT HAS BE MISLEADING PEOPLE FOR YEARS 2
DtheD Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 AS I SAID MANY TIMES BEFORE, THIS WAS A ALL BLACK GROUP. DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS WHITE GROUP THEORY CAME FROM, BUT IT HAS BE MISLEADING PEOPLE FOR YEARS Another one of those rumours that repeated often enough becomes 'fact' I guess.... Have to say I was always convinced he was a black singer.... 3
Steve G Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 White group? Another false story from the sage of norman soul ….he who knows everything, well so he thinks 2
KevH Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Someone told me that Garland Green was believed to be the lead singer.? Another rumour.?
Arthur Fenn Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 always thought the lead vocal was familiar & totally wonderful even when the "its a white record" theory appeared in the 80's. Agree with Kev, it does sound like Garland's rich brilliant tones
Dave Thorley Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 The lead singer was from Louisville and when the name was mentioned, they other local musicians nodded and mumbled in a knowing fashion, but I've forgotten his name. But will find out again. 1
Glynthornhill Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Buddy Rogers Jarret is the vocalist on the track Dave. Resides in Memphis , Tennessee but Abul been unable to locate him . 2
Dave Thorley Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Buddy Rogers Jarret is the vocalist on the track Dave. Resides in Memphis , Tennessee but Abul been unable to locate him . Yep just got the same from Abul this morning. He tells me they went on to working with Al Green's band. It's seems that Buddy was the main vocalist on the tracks
Jim Elliott Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 The best record Jerry Butler " never made" ;) Jim 1
Blackpoolsoul Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 (edited) I have just found this thread as I am doing some work on lamp etc I can tell you that in the Indianapolis Star they reported the sad passing of Herbert Williams Gibbs, Iii 18 Aug 2021 — Louisville, KY – 78, Louisville, KY. Passed away on August 5, 2021. Herb was most remembered as the band leader and drummer of The Fabulous Moonlighters On 11/11/2014 at 10:56, Dave Thorley said: Yep just got the same from Abul this morning. Blackpoolsoul Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 (edited) There is also another connected to the band, the passing of William Edward "Roach" Cochrum 79, of Louisville died Monday, July 9, 2018. He was an accomplished musician until he became ill. He was the guitarist on a tune most soul people will know Edited December 25, 2021 by Blackpoolsoul

Kenb Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 Their 45 has come up for sale again (Aug 2023) on Rare Norther Soul.com and it reminded of this Dave Thorley OP/thread which… …Prompted me to add an unknown (or perhaps not widely known) Footnote on DSoF. In July 1971 a three-car wreck near Carmi Illinois on route South to Paducah on US460 saw 5 members of a band injured and 1 member killed. The injured band members were Buddy Jarrett, William McBroom, Nathan Trabue, Aaron Purdie and Mike Baker. The band member killed in the accident was 20year old Gilespie Taylor, member & manager of DSoF. It’s possible by this time the Detroit part of DSoF had been dropped for just Sound of Fiction.
Markmodern Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 Isn’t there a reissue of this from a couple of years ago on Crates of Soul records
Kenb Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 yes...you'll fall over that version if you do a discogs search
Frankie Crocker Posted August 12, 2023 Posted August 12, 2023 How rare is this? Does anyone remember this being played out in public? would be interesting to know who owns the six copies!

Although demand is high and the record is good to better depending on how you like or need it. But never that rare. 1
