Billy Freemantle Posted November 5, 2004 Author Posted November 5, 2004 Billy i was in Chicago a while back and was sat in the House of Blues club/restuarant the night before i flew back home, and as i glanced around the posters and flyers on the walls i saw that Bobby Bland was appearing 2 nights later, i could have roared like a red-haired child, just my bloody luck (i'm not a rich guy, and my place of work would finish me if i stayed any longer) so i guess it was fate, would love to see the fellow play live. Was at Mark Bicknells house the other friday and he had an autographed photo of the legend adorning the wall of his living room..........sooooo jealous link One of the thing that I will always be grateful to Northern Soul for - what I see as one of its greatest strengths - is the way it introduced me, and loads of other kids like me, to such a wide variety of styles in the black music tradition. I first heard 'Call on Me' and for many years know only 'Call on Me' ... but when the time come I got into 'deeper' stuff. Without that first exposure on the early Ns scen that simply wouldn't have been possible. In the same way my current enjoyment of pretty avant garde jazz is al down to an acquaintenece with the likes of Ramsey Lewis as a teenager. The Northern Soul scene provides a musical education that cannot be underestimated.
