We've seen so many negative posts lately, let's try and lighten the mood...

Anyone on the scene knows how generous soul music lovers can be.

Back in 1970, I showed a vague interest in soul music. My brother in law was a local DJ and he fanned my flame by giving me a box of maybe 150 singles. Free. Lots of Tamla, Stax and Atlantic. Sure, some of them were knackered, some were crap, but his warm generosity kicked off a lifelong love affair with the music of Black America.

Yes, there are some shady characters and more than a selfish few on the scene, but I reckon everyone on here has got a tale to tell regarding the kindness of Soulies.

Used to have an old skinhead/soul boy type as a lodger when i was a lad of about 9, he gave me a box of 7's when he moved out. motown and some old trojan stuff etc, started me on the slippery slope. Cant remeber his name now but eternally grateful.

One kind Soulie generously gave me cash and a brand new pair of black driving gloves in exchange for 4 black bombers in 1969. Unfortunately he hadn't asked persmission of the gloves' owner before being so magnanimous. I think the cash was his though.

I used to remember my old friend Pete Myles from Aldershot. As well as driving me to venues and back, I'll never forget the odd Saturday evening during the early to mid-80s, where he'd phone me and if I wasn't doing anything, told me to wait there, have a blank C-90 tape ready, as he was coming down with his box with his latest acquisitions. He would put together a tape for me from his box, while we sat there and listened to them over coffee, cigarettes and socialising with my mum, who always got on well with my friends!

He was also the person who persuaded me to sell all my pressings and start collecting originals! Sound advice at the age of 20!

Wonder what Pete's doing now? I do miss him, as he was one of these rare characters who would do anything for anyone, and everyone loved him - if you're out there Pete, drop us a line!

I'd like to thank the soulie who gave me £2.00 for the parking meter at The new century soul club nighter, Manchester, a couple of years back. Never could find him to return the money once I'd got change. Cheers mate!
