It's a film, not a documentary, don't break my heart. For some reason I want it to be OK, that'll do me. I find myself with an emotional investment in this bloody thing for some unknown reason. I can't see the film until the dvd arrives from Amazon, so be gentle. 1
TheBigO Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 All the online reviews have been very positive so far. Im looking forward to see if BBC's Mark K reviews it 1
Sarge Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 (edited) Time out review (attached) ..... Im no expert, it seems to be written in a northern dialect, but not necessarily the 'right' one? Edited October 16, 2014 by Sarge
Popular Post MartynJJ Posted October 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 16, 2014 I've seen the film. It's a very fine example of British film work, well worthy of the accolades it's receiving. Elaine and her team have done a great job of really trying to recreate the look and feel of the times and I would imagine all of us in some way will be able to relate to the journey the two young men are on having discovered Northern Soul for the first time, irrespective of when we personally first came to the movement. It's not a documentary and shouldn't be anticipated as such, it's a piece of fiction. But even so the attention to detail is evident in every scene. So get out there, see it and enjoy it. It's a film that truly deserves to do well. and will undoubtedly transfer you to a place and a time in your own heart and youth where you lived for the weekend x 7

Dave Rimmer Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 On a purely personal note, I'm out of the country this weekend, DJing in Paris, so obviously can't get to see the film at the cinema. What I don't want to find when I get back are lot's of reviews that give the whole plot / story away, I don't want people to not review it though, or make comments, I just don't want to read them until I've seen it myself. So if you are going to review the film in a thread, please make it clear what you are doing in the thread title. Or better still, keep them on this thread, and I won't look again. Thanks 3
Soulman Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Dave, I really don't want to ruin it for you or anyone else but I just have to tell you that......................................... The butler did it! 2

Methinks he's written the review on the back of a beer-mat https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/film/northern-soul-review-coogan-bluffs-the-rest-bluster-1.1966883 Probably because it was directed by an Irishman. Shimmy Marcus and the Editor of The Irish Times moulded together would not know 10% of what Elaine Constantine knows about Northern Soul. In fact I think they need to be told that and now. So I'll crack on with that, but in the meantime maybe pinch of salt with these eejits. 1 3

So I'll crack on with that, but in the meantime maybe pinch of salt with these eejits. I'm sorry to say that I agree with his review. Don't forget that he isn't one of us, and therefore has a much clearer and open mind on the film. I am going to see the film again because I couldn't hear the dialogue at Blackburn, but I found the whole plot very hard to understand. If I had no past interest in this music, I certainly wouldn't be beating a way to the next allnighter wanting to emulate the characters in this film. I was hoping for more humour and likeable characters. More like The Commitments. Disappointed of Barnoldswick. 4
Jnixon Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 At least it got one more star than the Ninja Turtles!! But not the five stars this guy gives Monsters Inc. If he feels that a Hollywood film that's basically saying to kids don't worry if a thing comes into your bedroom from another dimension it's all fine, is worthy of any merit then you can discount his view, I would suggest. Going to see film next week. Personally, I can only critique it a piece of film making as it has nothing to do with my yoof, which is almost a unique perspective on this forum.
Simsy Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 He was reviewing a film, not the music Ian. I understand that Quinvy.

Simsy Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Brilliant film by an English man, very different from the book. And very different to the theme of this thread, which is about Northern Soul reviews. Quinvy knows his stuff and I hold him in high esteem. That said it makes me smile that we could f*ck up a cup of coffee when we stroke things to death like this... The passion expressed in the film by the characters, the music, the authenticity... How about a little of that?!
Popular Post Corbett80 Posted October 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2014 I think it should of been done with more 'joie de vivre' like Hairspray myself. 4
macca Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 If Mr. Quinvy of Barnoldswick was skeptical before seeing the film and quite unimpressed after seeing it, then that's his prerogative. Aren't we allowed to dissent, ffs? Viva the single mindset!! I'm looking forward to seeing it on DVD and will reserve my judgement till then. 3
Corbett80 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 (edited) I'd of had a scene where all the record dealers pop up from behind the record boxes one by one as part of the big hoedown finale. 'Right Track!' Edited October 17, 2014 by corbett80 2

Quinvy Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 If Mr. Au contraire, I was never skeptical before the film came out, and after seeing the trailer I couldn't wait to see it. I did enjoy the experience especially the dance scenes and I am going to see it again this weekend so that I can hopefully enjoy the dialogue. I think that what Elaine has achieved is nothing short of amazing. I was just trying to add some balance to the conversation after Simsy was looking to lynch a critic for writing his honest impression of the film from a non northern soul perspective. This is probably how many will view it, so get over it. I hope for all concerned that it will be a huge success. 2
Pete S Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Very positive review by Mark Kermode too! Is that on iplayer anyone know?

Popular Post Chalky Posted October 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2014 Mark Kermode gave it the Film of the Week, high praise indeed from the best film critic out there IMO. There is a podcast of the show Pete, Mayo and Kermode Film Review. 6
