Harry Crosby Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Hi all what`s the best way to remove sticker residue from a label?. Thanks for any info you can give me.
Alan Bonthrone1 Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Also what about removal of felt tip pen ? Thank you.
Tlscapital Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 There isn't one way. It all depends on the sort of paper of the label, the ink they've used and if it was "plastified" or not. Then there are the differences of glue used for the sticker. How old the sticker/glue is... So, I'd say that I've learned to leave some in accordance with the sticker wich will be less "damaging" than to reveal an "ugly/nasty" sticker tear/mark on the label. Some just need a peel. Some do need a little "fuel" soaking (BE careful/cautious about some ink used on label can react to fuel and leave some ring discoloration) before/after peeling. Some do need to be scrapped gently... It's a whole science IMHO. 1
Amsterdam Russ Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I've had yhis in my bookmrks for ages and refer to it when needed. You might find it helpful, but as said, it all depends! https://tipnut.com/25-helpful-items-to-remove-sticky-adhesive-goo/
Rom1 Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I often use a very effective anti-adhesive liquid called "Proseptine" from Gifrer firm (I don't know if it exists in your country, I'm from France)...it's great, I can remove all of this sticky residues without staining labels, LP covers...
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 (edited) I used after shave on biro and it worked fine, tried it on felttip, is was a little less, dry non shine labels. Edited October 4, 2014 by Prophonics 2029
Soulman Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Anything oil based will remove sticker residue. Mayonnaise is good without being too harmful. Steve
Frankie Crocker Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Lighter fluid usually does the trick. Important thing is to not tear the label. Use a bit of fluid on cotton wool and check the label ink doesn't run - if it does, go easy on the residue or there will be a light patch where the label was.
AlanB Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Also what about removal of felt tip pen ? Thank you. I would like to know this too. Also is a different method needed for a paper label and a molded (solid centre UK) label. Thanks.
Alan Bonthrone1 Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 It might dry out, but so far I, ve made it worse.
Garswood Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 (edited) I'm sure there's a product from the chemist you can get like a spirit based solution for removing glue of plasters which have been on the skin for a long time, can't remember what it's called though...Phil Edited October 5, 2014 by garswood
Alan Bernie Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 WD40 removes the residue from sticky label.Hope it helps without any damage .
Davenpete Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 (edited) WD40 removes the residue from sticky label. Hope it helps without any damage . NO!!!! Adding oil to your labels - mad! Petrol lighter fluid - back in the days we still did artwork on drawing board we always used it for degreasing and removing spirit glues, also great for degreasing vinyl. Felt tip - unlikely you will ever really succeed. Dx Edited October 6, 2014 by DaveNPete
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 What about something like carbon tet with a poultice to soak up the ink.
Cunnie Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Surgical spirit from the chemist is pretty good & also acetone. Best thing I have ever used though is welding anti-spatter spray but be careful that you don't get any on the vinyl.
Guest Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 What about something like carbon tet with a poultice to soak up the ink. Carbon tet will most certainly melt styrene........so be careful!
Weego Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 I use Un-Du adhesive remover and it works perfectly. I bought it on eBay US. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR3.TRC1.A0.H0.XUN-DU&_nkw=UN-DU&_sacat=0
Dave Pinch Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Turps / white spirit gets sticker residue off
Tiberius Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Purely coincidentally I've just found this link - https://www.genesis950.com/page/how%20to%20clean%20vinyl%20record%20labels No idea if the product is any good but the method illustrated is applicable when using some of the other liquids/solvents mentioned in this thread to remove stickers.
