Pete S Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 That doesn't look quite right to me. I sold one of these for £10 in 1979. Thought I was laughing all the way to the bank, £10 for a patch? 1

Stevegods Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 Well with the prices some patches / badges have gone through on eBay in the last month or so ... i think they are just trying their luck .... you don't see the 1st Anniversary patch too often ... or maybe its on an original Levies 501 denim jacket worn and signed by Russ W ...

Veedub Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I kept several from my Casino days, for years . I remember loads of repros doin the rounds in the 90s, and you couldnt tell the difference from the originals ,They were perfect copies. Theyre just an embroidered patch at the end of the day. I gave all mine away . I bet half the "original" ones on ebay are those repros .

Wicked Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Mine were dumped in a drawer for 20 odd years until I sold them on ebay, think I got about 30 quid each for them. I sold 2 to a guy in Italy.
Wicked Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Kev didn't DJ at the first Casino allnighter did he? it was a few weeks later when he started.

SHEFFSOUL Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 i sent the seller two questions which are not viewable on the sale page..i honestly think its a fake..and they may not realise...
Kegsy Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) There were no badges/patches on sale at the first Wigan all nighter, thats got to be a fake, for a start Kev didn't do the first one as far as I can remember. Why would anybody produce patches for the first night ?, not knowing whether anybody would turn up or not. Edited September 29, 2014 by Kegsy
Guest Matt Male Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 That edging is machine-stitched on a 1980s Bernina Bernette 334D overlocker. No way it was produced in 1973.

Why would anybody produce patches for the first night ?, not knowing whether anybody would turn up or not. here's the story..on the first night anyone who attended was asked if they wanted a souvenir patch..and those who did filled out their name and address.Kev Roberts apparently attended the second week. Russ told me they ordered 500 patches and he designed it (by now KR was DJing on a regular basis) several weeks later the patches were ready and each member was called up on stage to rcv them...ive seen a few over the years and the one on ebay is almost certainly not an original...
Veedub Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 The seller has ended the listing on ebay ...

Guest Dave Ward Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) It's got to be easy to fake these 'trinkets' , a decent sewing machinist, a bit of a scrub with a scouring pad, a few needle marks around the edge ? Or maybe I'm jealous because I chucked mine away whenever the shirts wore out ? How do you check for originality or providence ? Edited September 29, 2014 by Dave Ward
Frankie Crocker Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Looked Okeh to me before being removed from sale. Earlier thread on the subject dating from 30/9/09 shows a scan that looks very similar and puts the value at £300. Methinks this is a real 'un but it ain't worth £450. Should have been floated at a lower starting price but with a sensible reserve.

I have to say I dont remember any of that and I was there that night. Totally off my face but there nonetheless.

Why would anybody produce patches for the first night ?, not knowing whether anybody would turn up or not. That is a very very early badge though Kegsy, not the one in the picture which I'm not sure about but the proper Russ & Kev one, as I said, I had one in the 70's, I was given it in 1975 by my Auntie's husband who went to Wigan for the first 6 months or so, so it was sold at the Casino.
Guest Matt Male Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I have to say I dont remember any of that and I was there that night. Totally off my face but there nonetheless. What was that first night like Kegsy? Was it rammed? Was there any feeling about what it might become?
Kegsy Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) What was that first night like Kegsy? Was it rammed? Was there any feeling about what it might become? Yeah the first night. There was quite a queue outside but we were quite near the front. I remember a right scrum when they opened the doors, everybody pushing and shoving. When we got upstairs it was virtually empty and looked massive. Dont think it was anywhere near rammed that night, probably half or less of capacity. There were fewer people on the scene then, as opposed to 3/4 years later. You have to remember that the Torch preceded it and that was rammed with 600/700 people in there. As for the future, never gave it a thought, but it was by far the biggest venue, to hold regular all nighters, by a mile up to that point. Edited September 30, 2014 by Kegsy
Spacehopper Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 maybe we need a manships guide to original patches ... I better dig my older brothers bag out ,think its still at my mums :-)

I have to say I dont remember any of that and I was there that night. Totally off my face but there nonetheless. when i was designing the costumes for the movie 'Soulboy'...a guy had contacted the production and said he had some original memorabilia..he was from the Wolverhampton area and had come up to Stoke to see if he could be a part of the film. He was introduced to me as Clive Horden, a very friendly guy with enthusiasm to match. He had many original patches inc the 'first allnighter'..i said i'd always wanted one but i didnt start going to the Casino until early '74, i'd seen quite a few on clothing and bags during the first year or so..we got talking and i asked how they came about. He recalled that he'd been persuaded to go the Casino on the first night after attending the Catacombs i think he said. They all piled on a train and arrived , went in to a near empty venue. He told me the story as i repeated earlier..the badges were free..and he didnt think anymore about it after giving his name until a few weeks later (when KR had been DJing for a few weeks) when they were given out...Russ recalled to me it was imply a case of promotion..that people would return to claim their patch..i remember reading mainly thru B&S that things moved rather quickly with the Casino's popularity helped no doubt by the void left by the Torch!..a classic case of right place right time..
Guest Dave Ward Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) I read that Russ reckons there were 652 people in, on the first nighter, but they made £400 on the door at 75 pence admission, I make that £489, but he paid £55 for a B&S advert. Edited September 30, 2014 by Dave Ward
