Just walking through Selfridges Department store & I had a wtf moment.

Just caught the end of Betty Lavette Let me down easy ......or not. So surprised to hear it I didn't listen that carefully. The voice sounded very much like Betty & while the backing was very true to the original the 20 seconds I heard I realised that it was much more recent then the 60s. Thinking about it & the rubbish that they play through the instore system, it couldn't have been Betty & I can only assume that a remake has been recorded trying to get as close to the original as possible. Has anybody else heard this (or am I last to know as usual ?)

I believe Paolo Nutini has sampled it on his latest album.  That's probably what you heard.

I was in Selfridges the other week, having a drink with someone in the bar they have on the first floor. Anyway, Jimmey Soul Clark 'I'll Be Your Champion, I'll Be Your Winner' was playing! (Unless someone has covered that?.Volume was quite low...)

I'd expect it's most likely the Paolo Nutini that's been mentioned, but it's not beyond the realms of poosibility to hear decent music in department stores.  in the early 90s I worked in Littlewoods in Bromley for about a year, and we used to have a cassette player that piped music out through the store.  One of the things we had pretty much on a loop was the Bodyguard soundtrack, and it's about as much as I can stand to hear 5 seconds of Whitney, let alone the whole album, let alone looped all day, so we had to come up with some alternatives.  One of the lads came up with a tape of stuff like Madness, which provided some welcome relief, and I did a tape with general Northern which was great to pop on.  I can't remember everything on it but two that stick out that were definitely on there were the Tomangoes and a Kent Anniversary single with a great unreleased Dore instrumental, "Surf And Soul" by 'The Superbs Band'.  These were great to while away the hours checking stocks of crimplene nighties and support hose, and I guess anyone walking in who knew them would have got quite a surprise.  Nobody complained that they didn't like it or anything, so we just carried on dropping it into the 'playlist' the whole time I was there.  Perhaps they even played it once I'd left, you never know...

All the best,

Nick

These days, I would imagine that somewhere like Selfridges don't leave it to the staff and have someone sorting out what gets played in their stores..I was in the Co-Op last night and even they appear to have a piped in, in house 'radio station'...
