TOAD Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Signed it's the least i can do for the music that's shaped my life.
Pete S Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Don't know what happened to jackie Bernard, 2 years ago there was great footage of him playing at Reggae events in Mexico, interviews, the lot - did he die of cancer?
Cutdown69 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Pete Check this article from the Gleaner last year https://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20140202/ent/ent1.html#.Uu58U4SA4ak.facebook I sent some funds at the time, which I believe helped pay for someone to come over to his one room home and keep it clean Sad to hear his passing...suffer no longer Jackie
Pete S Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 So diabetes then. It was Brazil, not Mexico that I saw the footage of him. Apparently thats when they realised something wasn't quite right. The ludicrous thing though, while he rotted away in a partly built house in poverty in Jamaica, his records from 1968 to 1970 often sell for over £100 a time...Kingstonians sales on Ebay for just one year must be over £5000
Cutdown69 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 True Pete I am as guilty of spunking money on vinyl recorded by artists that live or have died in extreme poverty...it is a sad world we live in I had seen some pictures of Jackie living in what can only be described as squalor, with incontinence problems, and his dentures had been stolen in a recent hospital visit..it was enough to make me do something (which wasn't much to be honest) if only to make me feel less guilty
Mr Smithy Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Signed. Disgraceful, but not surprising.
Stephen T Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I joined and shared- thanks for letting us know about this good project
