Agentsmith Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 a truly wonderful, intuitive and graceful artist, a jazz pianist of immeasurable comparison..the plaudits will go on and on, a participant in one of the most enduring groups of all-time, the jazz crusaders, latterly the crusaders who bestowed upon us all, a treasure trove of classic albums, from which we can draw many fine examples of their definitive brand. in the late 70's/early 80's sample, felder and hooper even established their own personal identities through solo releases, not that they couldn't have done that long before, such was their abiding talent. recently ive been reliving a truly gargantuan slice of intricate jazz funk from the "images" album, namely, "snowflake", a staggering testament to their knowledge of their instrumentation. of course, many would consider their zenith in our time to be that of the global chart topping "street life", that bought randy crawford into focal view and established her as a star in her own right..the full length lp version still captivates today and regularly features via the airwaves and in many crossover rooms across the country, the standard that it has become...yet, the constant is the musicianship shown here, where they could turn their hand to a commercial project and produce an all-time classic...they must, to this day, be eternally proud of the success that garnered. above all else, joe sample and his colleagues still persued their vocation with undiminished vigor and as the decades have passed, they have continued to gain admirers..the percussion work of stix hooper, relentlessly efficient, the saxophonist supreme, wilton felder and the spellbinding keyboard wizardry of joe sample...silenced only by mortality, but alive in the hearts and souls of all who witnessed him in his element, via every format, but ultimately in the flesh....something i did myself way back in 1979 at birmingham odeon, such a long time ago but a memory that resonates as fresh as if it was yesterday. there really are some remarkable greats residing in the celestrial amphitheater.....a piano surely is never going to sound finer now......play them "carmel" and knock em dead joe....
