Billy Freemantle Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 (edited) How many records can people think of that are 100% doo-wop and 100% Northern at the same time. Two classics that immediately spring to my mind are The Empires - "You're on Top Girl' and The Delcos 'Arabia'. And does anybody know if the Empires of 'You're on Top' are in any way related to the earlier harmony group of the same name ? Edited November 3, 2004 by Billy Freemantle
Pete S Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 I've found The Empires on 11 different labels from 1954 to 63, almost certain to be different groups.
TheBigO Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 I'vebeen spinning The Vondells 'Valentino' which has a Doo-Wop feel to it to a packed floor in the Mojo Room at the Plinston for the past 2 years. Great record.
Rotherham Soul Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 How about The Showmen "The Wrong Girl"
Pete S Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 The Ramblers - So Sad - Trumpet out and out doo wop
Marc Forrest Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 The Delcos 'Arabia'. link You should give the very first version of that tune by the Creators on Hi Q a try, now that is what I call Doo Wop Marc

Guest 45s and 33s Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 The Profiles - Take a giant step and The Dubs - Just you have a doo-wop element I think. A
Pete S Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 The Flamingos - I only have eyes for you - sounds very doo-wop to me What about Hey Litttle Woman by the Orioles on CP Parker (and on UK Summit LP)
Guest in town Mikey Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 I went to a Doo Wop night quite regularly about 10 years ago in Kentish Town, London. I would be the only guy there not dressed in best 50s regalia. They were a great bunch, and the music was top class, but they never had any record dealers, and the DJs would never want to part with any of their discs. Now if I had picked up a Vondells there, I think I would still be on cloud 9!
Dayo Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 How about The Dynamics "Misery" ? Does that count?
Guest in town Mikey Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Would Tommy Frontera - Leading Lady, or Soft Walkin by Freddie Houson be doo wop? They both have a very 50s feel. Love the line Got my girly girly on my arm.
