dedji1955 Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 The Film have a FB page for folks to link together to get the Independent Cinemas to show which is proving successful It would be worth having a separate thread on here to bring pressure on Cinemas to show it and to link in with local Soul nights
Drewtg Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 When I saw "Once upon a time in Wigan" I sobbed - literally. So embarassing. When I saw "Soulboy" I sneered - especially at the dance scenes. I have seen the clips of "Northern Soul The Film" and the atmosphere looks about right. I don't have very high expectations because it's a FILM, not a documentary. One of my ATF films is Zulu, if I were a military historian I could probably rip it to shreads, and no, I don't want to debate it here! I have spoken to Ellaine about the film and I think her heart is in the right place. We can't really ask for any more can we? In the imortal words of William Goldman "Nobody knows what makes a hit film", so let's just see it and have our opinion without getting evangelical about it. After all, it can't possibly do as much damage to the scene as "This England" did. Can't wait 2
Soulfinger Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 Plenty of the locals are meeting in the nearby Red Robin pub prior to the film and the regular local Soul night at the Twisted Knee @ The Swinley on Wigan Lane is on afterwards to round off the evening Thanks. We'll definitely give the Twisted Knee a visit. 1
Popular Post Greg Belson Posted September 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted September 21, 2014 Just thought I'd add my two pence, for what it's worth.....I was lucky enough to see the movie in Los Angeles at an advanced screening 6 months ago. There were a cross section of Los Angelino soulies, and some ex pats, a few of which had first hand experience of Wigan and suchlike. Afterwards, we all discussed the merits of the film, the accuracy, the highs, the lows, and it stimulated a lot of great chat between like-minded folk of all ages, whether they were there or not. And I think that in itself is rather special.....bringing people together through soul music. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'll show my support 100%......a great, well thought out attempt to document a historic time, that can talk to everybody and not just the soulies that were there. And that's where this movie could and should succeed. 6

And that's where this movie could and should succeed. Bang on Greg. That's exactly what happened when I saw it with a bunch of friends and colleagues. Once you've recovered from the visceral sensory overload from hearing those tunes so perfectly aligned with that incredible imagery, you can then get into whether that Lou Pride was an original or not. It's quite an experience for anyone, but, as above, this film appealed to my colleagues who were not on the scene and were not into the music. And guess what? All of 'em want to see it again. I'm the biggest cynic out of all of us, so I deliberately held back from seeing the film until late on. I knew the music choices would be quality and I knew that Elaine was one of the few people who would be able to translate this era accurately and thank god she did. I'm hopefully gonna see it again shortly. Ian D 4

I want to see the film....stand alone.....and have the impact! Many films trailers kill the film for me....they take the action shots and promote that but the plot/story/characters can't be relayed in a trailer....so I avoid them.....along with others opinions on a film! Stopped reading newspapers in 1983. That choice to not be influenced in life by 'reporters' who ain;t in life as I am or think about life like I do...to be my guide! I see....hear...and think...for meself!x The music....?!.....to be very honest....I haven't even given that a thought! It's Northern.....on the big screen......i'm happy already!x @@ ~ LUV SOOTY X Thank you too for your efforts/input on behalf of us all and the scene too Ian...X Whilst I haven't contributed to the film discussions....I have read most and acknowledge your commitment to it mate.....nice 1X 1
TheBigO Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 UPDATE: Just heard that the Broadway Cinema in Letchworth will be screening it from Oct 17th-19th. Full details when I have them as the message they left me was a little hard to hear. Wahoo 2
Steve S 60 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Add Huddersfield to the list..... https://www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/northern-soul-movie-rekindles-memories-7810370 2
Guest stevemcmahon Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 People power! DOES work. Well done
Steve S 60 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 People power! DOES work. Well done Can't take any credit for the Huddersfield showing, but I'm going to ask my local cinema about a screening. Given the manager is my oldest lad's best mate I'm quietly confident. 1
Dave Rimmer Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I have to laugh about this. Dudley is probably one of the last places I would expect to see this at the cinema, but lo and behold, the Showcase is showing the film on the 18th October. And I'm in France that weekend 1
