Thecivilservice Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Look... it just looks like a shit film, end of story...I know people will be interested because it's Northern Soul, but even that, what a TERRIBLE name for a film, how about Punk - The Movie or Psychedelia - The Motion Picture - how stupid do they sound as film titles? Well 'Northern Soul The Movie sounds exactly the same. I just watched the trailer and really have no idea what the film is about - ie what is the plot, what might happen to the characters, why is this interesting etc, it's not enough that there's northern soul music and folk dancing about everywhere, sorry. The trailer has completely failed to fulfil it's purpose, no one outside of the Northern Soul scene will be remotely interested in this because the trailer makes the film look shit, it could just be an hour and a half of dancing with a car chase in the middle for all anyone can tell. To clarify, I've not seen it, I'm just saying that the trailer makes it look shit, the previous trailer was just as bad and Northen Soul the Movie is a stupid name for a film. It might be great. 1

In the old days there would have been a voice over giving a synopsis of the story line. Those were the days eh?

To clarify, I've not seen it, I'm just saying that the trailer makes it look shit, the previous trailer was just as bad and Northen Soul the Movie is a stupid name for a film. It might be great. Well I definitely admire your candour. In a perfect world, my Northern Soul film would be much more complicated, have impenetrable plot lines and use gimmicky camera techniques. But it would never get made 'cos it's a fantasy. The reality of making a film and getting it out there is a daunting task and not many people manage it. Sure, we could all make a better film and a cooler trailer but how many of us do? Right now this is the No.1 music DVD in the UK 5 weeks before it's even available. It's also No.9 in the Film Drama rankings and the 50th best-selling film in the UK right now. So it's striking a chord with the public despite your misgivings about the trailer. It could be that this film is simply just not aimed at you. You're obviously looking for something else. Which is fine, but I certainly wouldn't dream as being as belligerent as yourself about a trailer which is massively appealing to the public as evidenced by the film's rise up the rankings since the trailer was released. So, OK. I understand that you're not enamoured with the film and the trailer but why demean something that is striking a chord with the general market? Do you know better or something? Ian D 10

To clarify, I've not seen it, I'm just saying that the trailer makes it look shit, the previous trailer was just as bad and Northen Soul the Movie is a stupid name for a film. It might be great. Saturday night fever seemed to catch on, quite a few people not into the disco scene watched it, so it could have a wider appeal. I've watched most of the little clips that have been put up and the trailer, and I don't know why you've come to the conclusion that they make the film look shit, you obviously have your reasons but to balance your view, I think they make the film look good. To be fair, I can't pinpoint why, I know I got a little tingle watching some of the dance sequences, and it managed to take me way back and I really enjoyed that time of my life, so maybe that's it. The title is a 'catch all', well too me anyway, lots of people were touched by northern, even if only briefly, and with artists like Duffy and Plan B using dancers, I think there's probably more people will take an interest than we realise. To make something accessible you need a title that's easy to identify with, Northern Soul the Movie pretty much fits the bill in that department, I suppose it could have had a slightly more obscure title, maybe Shrine or The three before eight, for example, but I'm not really sure what that would have achieved, other than to possibly confuse the potential audience. Your last sentence ''It might be great'', is sort of where most of us sit, the majority of posts on Source that I've read are willing it to be good, but we can't make that final judgement until we've seen it, so me, I'm going to do what seems fairly unconventional these days, actually wait until I've seen it before I pass judgement 4
Stevegods Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Doesn't look bad to me ... I loved "Soulboy" as I thought the characters where well written and very believable and it was very endearing ... "Northern Soul " as a title while being simple and to the point may leave little to the imagination but it's a difficult one to have a headline for . "3 before 8" would have been my choice but then we could all make different choices and loose others that don't know anything about the scene . Nostalgia is big business .. and being able to be taken back in time to a place we all have fond memories for will always be a winner for those that enjoyed those times .. From what I've seen it kind of captures the elements of that time and the dancing sequences look fantastic ..the music sounds tremendous and I'm hoping it's going to be a great success for all who have put their hard work, time and effort in for so many years . Prequel next called " Northern Soul 2 " ( The Highland Room ) on the life story of Ian L . Who is making slow progress and I'm sure we all wish him a full recovery .

Perhaps you have the gift of working out what a long film might be like in 60 seconds. As soon as I heard Shirley Ellis I thought WOW. Then the MVP's and I'm totally hooked. Casino dance hall scenes are brilliantly authentic. The lads at the end confirm this is a northern film so the scene is set. The music alone will make it a great film. The dancing should elevate it beyond this level. Everything else will be a bonus, especially for the initiated. My experience is that most film trailers are crap - usually the ones I see in the cinema put me off seeing the film. This trailer piques the interest sufficiently for average film goers to consider it as an evening's entertainment. I just LOVE the title and can't wait until Northern Soul 2 is released. 3

I am looking forward to this film and I appreciate all the hard work involved, making a film is something I've always wanted to do too but realise it's a massive enterprise in a cut-throat business. My 'only' gripe is the setting. Saturday Night Fever was a film made in the 70s and set in the 70s, it was of it's time. Maybe it wasn't quite as accurate in its portrayal of the New York disco scene of the time, but what was in the film was something that thousands of people were experiencing every weekend in the mid-70s and they could relate to it at that moment. As accurate as this film is it is only pure nostalgia, and to be honest not even my nostalgia as I came around '78. Trying not to moan here and, as I say, well done everyone, but why the 70s... again? Edited September 13, 2014 by Matt Male

I could just as easily made the same point using Grease Matt, but I had a flashback to attending a wedding in 78, the bridegroom wore a white suit and at the reception all of us were expected to do that bloody silly night fever dance, which I flatly refused to take part in. This wasn't in New York, it was down town Bedfordshire, in a small village called Cople. Forgive me, I was out last night, still haven't slept, so now can't remember why I was making the point, I'm sure it was something to do with what you said about Fever being of the time and place. Trying not to moan here and, as I say, well done everyone, but why the 70s... again? I suppose in a way, it would have been nice if this film was made 20 years ago, but better late than never an' all that. I'm sure once it's a huge success they will make '2', then '3', covering the different decades properly - more to look forward to! (Thanks in advance Elaine).....Who do you recon would be the most suited actor to play Keb Darge in 'Northern Soul 2'? We could come up with a list of Actors to play certain Characters to 'help' Elaine (You're welcome) Len Edited September 14, 2014 by LEN
Fishcake Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 A lot of time ,effort and thought have gone into this film,i personally would not compare it with Soul boy,its looks more authentic and true to the scene. To make a film about the scene is a difficult undertaking, especially as many people have different perspectives of it ,and so we should, thats what makes it special. The soundtrack looks great, and i will look forward to seeing the film on big screen and of course listening to the great tracks on surround sound. Tony
Soulfinger Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 The Soundtrack arrived from Amazon today. I've enjoyed listening, as I knew I would, the interview with Elaine is excellent. The bit about the handclap in Duke Browner just nails what it's all about for me. But the highlight is Richard's interview. It's had the questions edited out so it's just him talking. Very interesting indeed. 1

Very interesting indeed. Wow. That's an early-doors delivery you got. And that editing on the Richard Searling interview actually took a further 2 grueling weeks but we think it made for a better visual experience rather that just a talking head. The Richard Searling interview is very much the cherry on the top of a particularly delicious cake I hope! Ian D 1
Guest Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Look... it just looks like a shit film, end of story...I know people will be interested because it's Northern Soul, but even that, what a TERRIBLE name for a film, how about Punk - The Movie or Psychedelia - The Motion Picture - how stupid do they sound as film titles? Well 'Northern Soul The Movie sounds exactly the same. . Calm yourself down! It's not even called Northern soul the film!!! Lol! It's just called Northern soul.

Illusive Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Just received a response to my enquiry from The Showroom Workstation Cinema in Sheffield to confirm that they will be screening Northern Soul and will be announcing their intentions soon as part of their Oct-Dec program. Good news for those of us in South Yorks. Now form an orderly queue - behind me plz.
dedji1955 Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I have just booked online for the first night at Wigan Empire on Friday 17/10/14. Only half a dozen or so gone. Free upgrade to luxury wide seat - are they trying to tell me something? Plenty of the locals are meeting in the nearby Red Robin pub prior to the film and the regular local Soul night at the Twisted Knee @ The Swinley on Wigan Lane is on afterwards to round off the evening 1
Seano Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I've asked Banbury's Odeon (odeon.banbury@odeonuk.com) if they'll show it. No idea if they have the flexibility to do this but anyone from Banbury Soul Club and the general area may want to get it touch with them too.
Johnlloyd Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Not sure if it's been posted already, but Bristol Showcase are taking bookings for a one off showing (at the moment) for Sat 18th Oct. Just bought 6 tickets, getting excited now. Taking the wife and kids (kids? the oldest is 31). John 1
