Sensations Demanding Man C/w Gonna Step Aside

Drenched in Northern Soul kudos & shimmering with perfectness!

Huge tune for “Butch” for several decades now and still as rare as ever, in fact beyond-rare, especially in this utterly impeccable condition. Perfect vinyl & two perfect labels, a glorious example.

How many records, can we say have been exhaustively hunted for over 3 decades; and still, there are only a handful known and all in the hands of the dedicated Soul collector/DJs who would rather sell their children than part with 45s of this pedigree.

Click the sound-file to unleash total vocal group Northern Soul of the very highest calibre spun by only the vinyl-endowed old-school Top Jocks.

We repeat this copy is flawless!

When confronted with an urgent vision of overwhelming wanting sucyh as this. But comments like VG-, shallow scuffs, ring wear, marked but plays well, discourage you. Let us assure you, we can find no evidence of any sales boasting this impeccable state, with only one other copy in better than “awful” condition, being sold this century.

Do not pass by.. the value of this offering can only go one way.

Beyond irresistible…. beyond essential… this is imperative Northern Soul vinyl ownership!

As BOTH sides are just mind-shattering vocal-group Northern Soul at it’s best! and it’s condition (we say again) could hardly be finer.

Frankie Crocker Ton Of Dynamite

DO IT FRANKIE - DO IT!!

A totally massive record at Cleethorpes Pier & Wigan Casino mid-70s but in truth all the credit for introducing this benchmark “NS FUNKER” lies in the innovative groundbreaking bravery of the Blackpool Mecca duo of Ian Levine & Colin Curtis who at the time circa 1975/76 were right at the top of their game influencing Britain’s Rare Soul dance trends, with memorable distinctive turntable choices as Prince George - The Wrong Crowd, Delrays Incorporated - Destination Unknown etc etc.

THe introduction of Frankie Crocker was so contrastive it, became the catalyst that launched a wave of the Funkier sounds becoming the Northern Soul norm as the sounds of Black Nasty, Rimshots, Brass Construction, Hamilton Bohannon invaded Britain’s all night club scene.

Whilst the above recordings have mostly fell by the wayside in recent times Frankie Crocker’s popularity has not only held firm, it as grown up into what can only be describe today, as a total “Floorpacker”.

THis copy before is the original first press VINYL copy, with two clean labels. The vinyl has a few minor surface blemishes but as you will hear it plays loud, clean & true.

The winning bid was £ 460.00

PS Do not overlooked the flipside which is note for note as good as the “NS Anthem” lead side..

Joy Marshall Heartache Hurry On Me C/w He's For Me

A recording that proves the Brits are capable of delivering the “Brill Building” sound of New York when required. Check out this almighty Sister version of the Robbie Porter, Roy Hamilton songs that sit deep in the hearts of the Northern Soul congregation as masterpieces of the “NS Beat Ballad” genre.

Listen to producer Mike Smith and arranger (Gary Glitter’s mentor) Mike Leander conjure up an orchestra presence that matches both the male versions. As the under-recorded voice of Joy Marshall eases her way in, then smashes this Big Big Song out the ground!

The real joy of collecting British productions on British labels is not just confined the the beauty of the PROMO label or the thrill of 50 year old flawless vinyl - it is with with patriotic pride that we can listen to this robust non-hit, comfortable in the knowledge that musically it easily matches up to it’s predecessors..

Condition is perfect and the song …even more so.

Charles I V The Girl Next Door

We did sell an acetate by these guys in recent months to a stampede of bids and wanting.

So we are super pleased today to been able offer this eye-catching original CAPITOL RECORDS 8” acetate of this fabulous UNISSUED Northern Soul session.

Full orchestra accompanies culture vocals saturated in Soul, with an arrangement offering everything we love about our sound.

Full on strings & pumping brass step aside as the cracking vocal takes over and leads the way for his buddy’s to croon the chorus within this huge production; Which is enhance even further by unexpected but awesome instrumental interludes..

I’ve played this for the fourth time today and I’m hooked.. it had every quality required to become today’s ear-worm… so be careful.

Other Brothers I'm Gonna Fine Love C/w A Little Girl (that I Can Call Mine)

Insanely RARE Texas vocal-group Northern Soul backed up with a mid-tempo harmony Soul Stepper.

This “impossible” gives up open-wound styled Northern Soul. Manifesting itself as an angry, snarling rasper that cannot be ignored. First championed by Keb Darge back in the restorative days of Stafford’s “Top Of The World” at the time it was allegedly a one-off; today there cannot be many more known copies, as this killer debuts our auction.

The a-side is drenched in everything Keb admired in a Northern Soul recording, another in his long list of undercooked recordings.Raw to the bone as the determined lead vocal is perfectly matched up to a honking sax and attention seekingn pumping brass. The rest of the team adding a layer of class to the proceedings with some delightful chorus replies. An inspiring sax break seals the session, making this one of the most-impressive Northern Soul 45s never to reach cult-status…sheer-rarity being it’s only obstacle.

Flip it over for a Soulful “Impressions” influenced stroller again bristling with the same enthusiastic naivety that just pulls you in.

Street-level Texas Soul at it’s most captivating..

Unimaginably RARE!!

Variations I Wanna Take You Uptown Vocal + Instrumental

The power of the Northern Soul DJ to change values, demand and availability of a 45 could not be more clearly showcased that this example of languishing for decades in collections, suddenly to rocket up to “NS Most-wanted” status,

A Northern Soul growler impregnated with a Norman Whitfield inspired sprinkling of FUNK.

I recently witnessed it’s floor-destroying capabilities at the wonderful VA-VA-VOOM all-dayer recently - LOUD - it rocked the joint.

The time to get on this “NS bullet” is now, value and awareness is starting to boil over and this copy was a Virgin MINT unplayed until the impressive soundfile was milked.

You will never find a finer or hotter copy of the Northern Soul NOW Sound.

September Jones I'm Coming Home C/w No More Love

This week’s “Black Is Beautiful” candidate is from the treasured recordings of “Pied Piper”

It matters not which side you drop the needle on, Jack Ashord, Joe Hunter and Mike Terry ensure you’re treated to the pinnacle of Detroit Soul as this single release lady tantalizes with samples of what else could lie in the “Pied Piper” Treasure Chest. (the next century would reveal 4 more delights) But meanwhile the Northern Soul collector / DJ could only fantasize of what be locked away.

This single exhibits in abundance the precise-power of “Pied Piper”, the black stock copy labels give the eye, what the ear is already enjoying - irresistible Detroit Northern Soul at it’s finest!

New York City Don't Rush Me Now C/w Deja Vu

It is unclear if these are the same guys who started out as “Tri-Boro Exchange” and then in 1972 became New York City to have that monster hit “I’m Doing Fine Now” on RCA.

What is clear is - this 1985 indie is one insanely-rare New York Sweet Soul ballad from an out-of-reach Top-Drawer! Check out the sensational mix of vocals, prepare to be moved by the depth of Soul this gathering projects within all the levels of cultured vocals. TOTAL CLASS!

This 45 is backed up with crazed string driven Boogie dancer! But in the light of the Sweet Soul side, this Earth, Wind & Fire clone gives me with no desire to wax-lyrical…although it is likewise filled with highly impressive vocals..but it moves me not… flip it..

The Sweet Soul side, is a blow-you-away phenomenal icy-sweet journey and rare in the extreme!

Rory Mcdonald Your Love Is Indescribably Delicious

You are looking at one the most obscure British offerings to the Northern Soul collector. Thanks, most probably to Johnny Arthey’s penchant for “Soul” that brought him to guide this Scotchman through a fabulous 1968 Ronnie Baker “Philly” composition that Willis Wooten put onto the Northern Soul map.

This version, unlike the Willis Wooten, is frighteningly RARE and carrying all the flare we’ve come to expect from an “Arthey” involvement, as the arranger embroiders a wall of horns with and incessant funky guitar riffs for the rough-coated McDonald vocal to rip into.

Powerful and highly creditable British take on a Philadelphia in-demander. If you collect English Soul 45s or you want the rarest possible variations of great Soul dance tunes…let us assure you this 45 is ridiculously challenging to locate…

Condition is flawless in every way..

Surprised to see that Joy Marshall was thought rare/desirable enough to justify auctioning by JM - Having said that, £78 is a very good result for the seller IMHO, especially when you consider that he used Gary Glitter's name in the flowery sales blurb!

It's quite a tough 45 to find but I couldn't get £50 for it when I sold mine.

Quality record though that - 100 times better than The Sensations from the same auction

 that's brilliant Pete. I would have said the total opposite myself. I have never been able to understand why that Freddie Butler was worth big money.

The Sensations is a tough record especially in that condition. Oh and it's bloody magic too.

Because you wait for the entire record before there's a chorus of any type on The Sensations...great let's waste 2.30 until the one good bit comes on

Sensations sold recently £1200 set sale

Would have thought its the going rate...2900 made me almost spill my soda drink last night. Really amazed me.. and almost tempted me to sell mine. Freddy Butler though indeed very cheap IMHO. Fabulous and really rare record, in fact the third rarest on Wheelsville.

Anyone notice that the exact same players are on both Silky Hargraves "Hurt by love" and the Freddie Butler "Save your love for me baby" - I mean exact, they must have been recorded within hours of each other. "Okay thanks Silky, great session man, can you send Freddie in now please. Hi Freddie. Ready? 1-2-3-4"

Spot on Pete....the backing track is so similar, defo recorded on the same day if not hours of "hurt by love".......I've never actually heard the a Freddie Butler track played out that I can remember, but would sound great over the speakers at a doo.......Sensations 45 is fabulous too, such a great dance record.

Blimey! I've bought and sold a few of these over the years...nowhere even close to these prices though. Amazing!

Who can afford these week in and week out for John's auction's though?

They are always talked of here and I don't think anyone has ever admitted to buying in his auction and winning at some of these bizarre price's achieved.

Mind you I don't think I would admit to winning either! Lol.

There must be more lottery winners in the soul scene than I could ever possibly of imagined!

Never made that connection myself before but its true they are very similar in sound  Love that sound of the snare drum btw.    Reckon he is using a jazz brush with perfection to get that sound. Awesome records both of them!

I have bought of him in the past when I was Dj'ing and desperate to own something. And I know for certain that a lot of the well known Dj's have bought of him too.

Then you and the DJ's you know are getting paid too much! :P

I have bought twice from John in 30 odd years (not his best customer obviously! Lol)  when there was something I couldn't find/ desperately wanted....but never in auction. Couldn't afford too!

And I just can't understand how so many auction prices hit staggeringly ridiculous levels when they are available much cheaper elsewhere and everywhere in some cases?

There just has to be a secret "lottery winners soul society" out there I reckon.  :g:

I only bought very rare pieces off him that aren't available anywhere. And that's what credit cards are for isn't it.

There are quite a few people out there now who have incredible Dj boxes with all the big hitters in there, and they have put them together in a very short time. If they had tried to put the same box together on the cheap they would be a long time dead and have nowt to show.

Times running out for us, and that's why these records go for such massive prices. If you want to have the best records now, you're gonna have to pay through the nose to get them.

The Marvelettes?................I also have a mint copy and although ive always said I would never sell it because its the only real way of owning and playing "Only Your Love" (Apart from the mega-rare single) I would price it at £30 tops.

Ive just listened to it...........I`m back in 73 :hypo: ......WHAT A F***ING RECORD!!!

Wow ..

I know I've been away from the scene for a while ... but really ..is this what stuff is really going for now ... flip ..or is this just on Manships site ??

Frankie Crocker for £460 ... and The Servicemen at £214 with nearly two days to go ...

I know the Servicemen's copy is the right way round .... so what price is the opposite version now ??

I need to sort through my stuff as I'm sure I have both of those ...maybe a couple of times over :)

Thanks ..mate .... good to get a bit of realism into my world :-)

It's as "real" a world as all the other worlds folk live in on the rare soul scene.

If it wasn't real world nobody would be coming on here commenting on it all the time

These are real records, generally rare records in great condition, with real people bidding real money on them - what's not to get about that?

I'm currently watching an eBay item that I have had for sale for a while - top condition copy - on here and on Facebook. Always in demand and frequently on wants.

I'm a humble collector, not a regular seller - have had it priced at £247. It's in John's book for £200 I think. However, it has been going for more for a while. There's a copy on eBay (lesser condition) that failed to sell as Buy It Now for £275 just a few days ago. A copy (presumably re-listed) from the same seller has got an hour left and it's at £365 with 34 bids on it.

'kin annoying that mine hasn't sold but it's the real world!

Might put the price up - that works with selling houses

Cheers

Richard

If you really think Frankie Crocker is worth £400 then you and one other person are out there on your own and it's you who doesn't 'get' it.

You honestly think these daft auction prices for common records are the norm?  Why?

Is the Skullsnaps on UK worth £300 then?
