Look forward to the Nancy Wilcox tracks Ady , I think it would be a good idea to get Ace /Kent to do a regular mixcloud or youtube mix , say a minute of each track being featured at 100 Club .I feel this would build demand in this  computer age, not everyone goes to 100 Club , and even if you do [ like myself ] ,it sometimes takes a few visits for certain records to hit home .Also ,was speaking to a regular record dealer about selling records ,and he said many  of his customers don't even attend All Niters or Soul nights , so there is certainly a hidden market out there . For what its worth in my opinion sixties newies are great the problem is that they don't get enough exposure the sheer volume of quality that has came out of KENT is incredible. The Barbara and the Browns CD was fantastic  including my favorite I am going to start a war. It seems to me more people should travel to hear new tunes not just Kent stuff but the other tunes that are played at progressive venues in the country.

Ady, the fact is that any Dj worth a dam would kill to have some one off quality 60's northern to play. I would have walked over hot coals to have some when I was promoting. 

 

The ones you sold to JT went down a storm when he played them at Burnley. The Cavaliers track was the b*llocks.

I love the whole concept of 60`s newies always have and always will.On the subject of the kent and its releases again please keep them coming the best ever. During the 1990`s when my two sons were growing up if it wasn`t for the kent LP`S AND CD`s and the occasional visit to keele allnighter I would have probably gone mad.

There are many more reasons why it could work than not.

 

No other nighter/venue/geographic location is better placed than the 100 Club to go weekly and appeal to the 18-39 demographic and capitalise on the interest that the film is about to generate. And the fact that the 100 Club is a "(night)club" in the nation's capital will always make it more alluring to a younger element than an old ballroom or men's club in a remote town or location. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course as that is the foundation on which the scene has operated so well for so long. But we are talking about a new approach here.

 

And while it is well established that many of the "seniors" on the scene at present wouldn't be inclined to attend a weekly event, you can be almost certain that a younger crowd would ... for all the same reasons that those on the scene back in the day would go every week.

 

Ady is obviously a promoter who  thinks "outside the square" and he has shown recently that he is prepared to get people like Matt involved in his operation to offer a fresh perspective on things.  And with a little marketing and promotion outside of the existing scene, a weekly 100 Club Allnighter could very easily become the vanguard venue for the scene in much the same way that the Wheel/Torch/Wigan were in their time.

Geographically no other place better than Central London? but thats in the very very South of England, what about our very very Northern England & Scot's young'ns, would you lay buses on for em'? How long do you reckon a weekly nighter could be sustained? ee lad, we can all dream

If I hadve walked into the Casino in '77 or Hinckley or indeed Stafford would I have hung around ? I doubt it. I agree with that.But in the same respect do you want to hang around on the youngsters scene?.Techno ,house,rave or whatever.? I'm sure most would feel like a fish out of water at these venues now.

Depends whats dragging them in, is it a genuine love of soul music, or just wanting to "fit in" to a scene

The main thin that keeps me traveling is to here new tunes from lots of genres (but I don't want funk and disco at the 100)

 

Northern is a broad church but WE need to preserve what its about it has always bee a 6T'S scene to me !

I agree with Phil there isn't enough new music, interest nor desire to go to the same venue week in week out.  The nearest we have been in recent times was Sheridans and that had a different club at the helm every week.  That kinda venue might work but not one offering the same every week.

Anyone who thinks there is going to be anything remotely like a "Quadrophenia" effect following this film is living in Dreamland I'm afraid. The film won't be that popular amongst the general public and music that is almost 50 years old isn't going to inspire youngsters to go to a do every week.

 

Even if it did a little bit, they'd probably be put off my sneering old gits who take a dim view of having a different slant on things

How many times do I have to say this?................THERE ISN'T ENOUGH NEW MUSIC TO SUSTAIN A WEEKLY NIGHTER!

 

Even the all time northern classics are "new" to an 18 year old just discovering soul music or who is frustrated by what is offered to them by the popular mainstream ... a  weekly allnighter could very easily sustain itself with an artful mix of all time classics, RnB , modern (70s) , latin, funky tunes, contemporary releases and the few new discoveries that are still turning up.  It would need skilful DJs with record collections that can cover all the above bases and who have a completely open minded approach to the broad church that is rare soul music .

 

The target crowd for such a weekly event wouldn't be the "elders" on the scene who have already made up their minds either that the scene has nothing new to offer or still wouldn't go to a weekly event if a tsunami of new music was still being discovered.  One suspects Ady is thinking this way by the very fact that he is bringing in other trusted people to offer a fresh perspective.

We will never see a weekly all-nighter for several reasons.  The two main ones are there aren't enough regular nighter people young or old and you wouldn't get the support of the dozens of promoters around the country which you would need for it to succeed.  Musically it can be done with some thought and imagination.

Cracking CD, had a couple of listens in the wagon this week.  Not to everyone's taste and certainly not to those who just like their classics but there is plenty in there to like.  The Jeannie Trevor (think it is that one) reminds me of Ady's Gerri Grainger acetate.

Gerri Granger has reached cult-status over the years and Jeannie Trevor deserves to be right there alongside her...but have musical tastes changed away from the big production stuff nowadays (more's the pity)?

I counted 73 events the other weekend (just on here btw), and all those events are mainly aiming at the same what 4000 people? So of course a weekly All-nighter would be impossible.

 

But to quote Sunnysoul…“Thinking outside the square”….It could be done if marketed outside of this Scene. Things would no doubt change dramatically, but to pull aprox 300 people to a Club in Oxford Street, London wouldn’t be difficult.

 

I supported a friend at Groove On at Milton Keynes Sat night, this was a different crowd to ‘us lot’, they were mainly from Milton Keynes, Luton, and London, but a pretty cool lot I thought (who would welcome 60’s Newies in with what they like to dance to) Over 300 ‘untapped’ people just at one event.

 

A weekly 100 Club is not going to happen (we know that) Also advertising to ‘outsiders’ goes against the grain ref the Scene as we know it, but to do so is better than it slowly dwindling away, and our music being forgotten.
