Dave for once I agree with you, Individuality is where its at when all said and done, whatever your bag/bagges/ holdall.

Hey Mak at least we aint sweaty gits :D Our holdalls are like the tardis mate, not just a change of beer towel or shirt in there :D

And before anyone asks the Carrots are lovely this year

I'd make it compulsory for Gentlemen to wear neckties and pocket squares between September and May.

And enforce a complete ban on quiffs.

In fact...

If I ruled the world,

Every tune would have

An adundance of strings

Every heart would have

A soul song to sing

And we'd all know the joy

An allnighter can bring.

If I ruled the world

Every man would be

A proper smart Mod

We'd all worship

Marvin as God

And cocaine would be

Sanctioned by Plod.

My world would be

A beautiful place

All the birds would have

A Twiggy-like face

All shareholders would be

Making a loss

And Margaret Hey would be

Kev Roberts' Boss.

Because with out these promoters there would be a very angry crowd of enthusiastic soul folk who are keenon keeping the ideals of the northern scene going, thus falling flat on its arse and becoming a stale teddy boy scene :shhh:

the point is, these promoters would still be promoting, and making even more money/full venues/ ego massaging trips if they let the 'floor' dictate the music, not sure where you got the teddy boy bit from, i thought this was a rare soul forum not rock n roll?

Just think about the fantastic action your inner thighs experience when you correct your 'almost' slip overs :wicked:

Just thinking about the fantastic action my knee experienced when it dislocated as a result of talc on the floor......... and the 3 months on crutches - even better.. ..but seriously, I agree with Hammy....the nostalgia thing ...for me, the best do's are where people turn up and enjoy themselves regardless of their attire, age or gender...and appreciate whatever is played - whether it's oldies, 6Ts newies, RnB...yadahyadahyadah - you know what I mean  ..Jo PS. All record prices would be pegged at 1979 prices and I'd know then what I know now

Take your pick --

FCUKIN HOLDALLS AT SOULNIGHTS ......................WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU WANNA GET CHANGED IN A COUPLE OF HOURS)

I take it you're not a dancer Mak?

I take a holdall to every venue whether it's a soul night or nighter.

Usually I pack at least 5 shirts, 2 pair of trousers/jeans, I towel, 2 face towels, deodorant etc etc.

Generally do the same Bri, just more comfortable dancing

Finish with the same clothes I start in, go home stinking of sweat, cologne, cigarette smoke and God knows what and nobody sits next to me on the train, great!!

I'd have to go along with this. In fact I actually married two red headed women. Not at the same time.

If you could change one thing about the scene what would it be?

I would insist on a ceasfire between rival promoters and record dealers. The level of acrimony that exists can be a major turn off for die-hards never mind new blood.

What one thing would you change?

Modernise "Pontins" holiday camps

I have been known to grace the maple in the past , but at 52 them bags get in the road of my zimmer frame.

seriously last year Iwent to a soul night that started at 8 o'clock and ended at 11.30 . After picking my drinks up off the bar I turned to walk away and fell arse over tit on the floor :D some twat had put his holdall right behind me on the floor .This man had come laden with a friggin small wardrobe for a few hours dancing in a half empty freezing cold room that was more like the size of a plane hanger................so now you see why, was'nt funny at the time but now looking back onto.gif:D

At weekenders I would add:

Heating :D

Bedding (clean!)

Towels (clean!) :D

Apart from that - my only comment is that there's far too much politics going on in the scene. We are all there for 2 reasons - music and to see each other. Life's too short to moan about who played what in what room blah blah blah

Spend the time enjoying yourselves with your mates rather than moaning!

Other than that I bloody love it all! laugh.gif

Well that should reduce the scene, say by at least 50% including punters, collectors and Djs to a nice tidy little number.

Well I'm a redhead, but the only bit of 50's culture that I can manage is wearing a pretty dress and lipstick, after making sure the house is clean, the kids are well behaved and the tea is all homemade and on the table for the exact moment that my husband returns from work.

And I'm only on 12 valium a day

Seriously though I would love one of those 50's conical bras that make your chest look like a pair of torpedos

As for the scene, I'd like every event that I want to go to have a creche with a trained child care assistant

AND I'd make the so called rare-soul and up-front events just like Congleton was. Oh no, I've got all nostalgic

I agree, there is too much politics and bitching on the scene, whether it is about the amount of oldies/modern/rb being played or what people are wearing, ffs, does this really matter, try spending some time on the 'Time and Envy, pubs, Chigago' social circuit to see how fortunate we all are, the gist of it is we don't have much to winge about if all some can find to criticise is the width of someone's trousers!! Right, i'd ban smoking, have less empthasis on Soul & more empthasis on Northern Soul, why's everything gotta be sooo soulfull nowadays what's wrong with a good old blue eyed stomper!

I'd have a decent selection of wines & real ales at venues & people enjoying themselves a lot less, there's nothing wrong with some good old fashioned self control!

It's cool to stay out when you are 18. At 40+ I somtimes (usually about 4am), just want a nap

tradition sucks, does that mean we have to break into chemists get smahed on drugs and dance for ten hours at 200 mph non stop, wear brut and fight anyone non soulie when queueing to get into an allnighter, (you can tell i read up on it all earlier), me i live for today and tomorrow and the day after and the day after that and sometimes even the day after that, more trainers and combat shorts with t-shirts on the dance floor !

They'd be alldayers then wouldn't they post-1819-1154633291.gif

Apparently so. But somewhere along the way, alldayers became as popular as Peggy March on the dance floor.

Call them allnighters but run them during the day. its all about marketing the brand I'm led to believe. Market it as the biggest allnighter since Wigan, than runs when YOU the public want it, day! Easier for getting babysitters etc etc

I can put face's to most of those names Mak

A local of mine sells a real ale called "Dogs Bollocks" on draught & recently started selling it bottled.

They had a great advertising campaign & there were posters all over the pub that read "you can now get your bollocks in a bottle"

How about for every mum/dad that goes there must be a daughter at least 18 years old and older who has to go that way. If i wanted to go to Northern soul nite and chat a girl up they would be young ones there over age of 18.

I won't have to worry about the ober 40's who i wouldn't want to be seen chatting up. There's some lovely girls on here in there 30's they lucky

Venues with cocktail bars! :tumbleweed3:

Sadly, I'm not joking. Whenever I'm in some dive of a place, I don't think-ooh how gritty, how real: I just pretend I'm somewhere else. I think soulies deserve some elegant venues now & then. It's not because I'm getting older (hello paulvandickvandyke, sorry I genuinely can't remember your proper name) I've felt exactly the same since my early teens. I'm a venue snob in an uncaring world
