Mick Boyle Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Dont know if this has been done before Got a free CD from Blackhearts soul night last Friday night and on it is cigarette ashes and i do think it is top notch but its absolutely smashed by That Beatin Rhythm and Theirs That Mountain. Also on it is Ann Robinson World of Happiness and I think this is so much better than Bird Walking. Got thinking about other instrumentals like Soul Steps The Dogs and again I prefer the vocal im So Sorry. Gave a lot of thought to it but couldn't find an instrumental that i preferred over the vocal Is it just me, am I just a sucker for all those silky - Heart throbbing - gritty - Tear jerking Vocals Are there any instrumentalist that outshine there vocal version Mick Edited August 11, 2014 by Mick Boyle
Jim G Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 That Beatin Rhythm and There's That Mountain got played before Cigarette Ashes (CA). When CA turned up at the Cats it was a revelation and everyone preferred CA. I have no preference , just depends on mood sometimes. Ans, if memory serves me right, CA sold for a fortune (£80?) in 1972 whic was about 6 weeks wages for many back then!
Kjw Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 'Sam Ambrose - They'll Be Coming' - much better than the awful vocal 1

Pete Eccles Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Bari Track. Was just going to post the same
Mick Boyle Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 'Sam Ambrose - They'll Be Coming' - much better than the awful vocal Ram Ram here I am - Dont get any better than that. lol 1
Guest Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Exus Trek. Bari Track. 100% with you on both choices...add "Cigarette Ashes" whilst we're at it
hullsoul Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 I'm usually a vocals over inst man but one that goes against that for me is the inst side of The Contemplations(Rock Candy)-Alone With No Love Dontee. Both brilliant sides but the inst just shades it for me. Cheers Martyn
Saxafone Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Going back in time, I didn't ever imagine LJR's Penguin Breakdown being anything other than an instrumental, still don't think the vocal compares. Ditto Al Kent, You Gotta Pay the Price, none of the vocal versions since hold a candle to it. Although the Supremes had a good try....... Taff 1
Popular Post Ian Dewhirst Posted August 11, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 11, 2014 'Festival Time' - San Remo Golden Strings beats the hell out of 'To Win Your Heart' - Laura Lee..... Ian D 5
Pete S Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 'Festival Time' - San Remo Golden Strings beats the hell out of 'To Win Your Heart' - Laura Lee..... Ian D I sold a Ric Tic white demo of this (Festival Time) the other day and it sounded completely different to the Gordy version, the main strings were almost in the background as if it was playing a stereo record but one channel was almost out, bizarre! I thought it was the record player to start with.
Mick Boyle Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Exus Trek. Bari Track. I know these tracks are top class Pete and if you want to throw some moves on the dance floor then instrumental is king. Now we are all older and if your at home in your easy chair in your music room, earphones on and a glass of bourbon in your hand wouldn't you sooner have your eardrums tickled by the magical vocals of Luther Ingram rather than some hairy arsed drummer Edited August 11, 2014 by Mick Boyle 2

Dazz Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Prefer 'I'll belong to you' - Milton Wright to 'The gallop' which was played first. Remember one night on the wall at Wigan some guy trawling the seller's going "Have you got the gallop", thought it was some sort of tropical disease

Guest Johnny One Trout Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Vocal pretty much every time for me
Popular Post The Animal Posted August 11, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 11, 2014 Sidra's Theme. Much better than poppy vocal. 7
Tlscapital Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Sidra's Theme. Much better than poppy vocal. And the vocal 'as long as you'll love me' is Eeek ! POP ! While the 'Sidra's theme' is brilliant "soundtrack" type of thing with that Detroit SoundZ. LUVIT
Tlscapital Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Prefer 'I'll belong to you' - Milton Wright to 'The gallop' which was played first. Remember one night on the wall at Wigan some guy trawling the seller's going "Have you got the gallop", thought it was some sort of tropical disease I'm not in the known, but 'I belong to you' sounds like a fake thing to me, like made for the Northern scene. With the tapes, licences and so on. It never sounded right to my ears and it has no early 7T's original release. I always assumed that way. Am I wrong or right here ?
Mick Boyle Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Sidras theme is a good point The vocal always does better than the ins on the dance floor or it does at the places I go to.
Jim G Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Catacombs Advert from early October 1972 in Blues and Soul (was just reading it today at home) Cigarette Ashes is there! (listed as Cigarette Ash!) Edited August 11, 2014 by jim g
Winnie :-) Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 vocal for me nearly every time, although I do actually prefer Soul steps to the vocal. I know we've done it before, but I don't really feel much soul content in instrumentals, don't shoot me I'm only saying 3
Guest Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Catacombs Advert from early October 1972 in Blues and Soul (was just reading it today at home) Cigarette Ashes is there! (listed as Cigarette Ash!) Cairstairs?..........weren`t they a troupe of bears?
Daved Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Vocal for me almost every time aside from the aforementioned Sidra's Theme and Liberty's "Girl You Better Wake Up"
Guest Garry Huxley Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 funky 8 corners pt 1 if you wanna laugh pt 2 if you wanna dance only writing this as I came across it as I was sorting records for Wellingborough w/ender
davidwapples Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 duke browner crying over you , much prefer the instrumental , not sure if it is because i heard the instrumental first choker campbell come see about me is a great instrumental of the supremes vocal if counting cover versions is allowed 2
Ian Parker Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Sidra's theme, Oh yes! RnR vocal, don't like it
Tattoodave Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 As I tend to singalong, gurn and dance at the same time I must admit I'm a vocals man all the way, though I do have a soft spot for the dirty sax of Bird Walking, even though I think the vocal version is sublime. 1
Paul Dunn Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 I thought this is a soul forum, how can an instrumental be called soul. An instrumental (along with that pop music with the right beat) played on the Northern Soul Scene is what we used to call northern dance music back in the eighties.
Guest Dave Turner Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Nearly always vocal for me but there are exceptions ... Sounds of Lane - Tracks To Your Mind (can't abide Hey Sah Lo Ney) Trampps - Penguin At The Big Apple (over Zing Went The Strings) Ramsey Lewis - Wade In The Water (over any vocal I've heard) Wingate's "Love-In" Strings - Let's Have A Love-In (over Flaming Embers)
Guest Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Double Cookin' - The Checkerboard Squares - Villa. The unissued vocal version is well made, but is not as good. I feel it loses atmosphere and sounds cluttered, much prefer Double Cookin'P.S. the vocals by The Magicians and called "(Just A Little) Faith And Understanding" Edited August 11, 2014 by Guest

Paul Dunn Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 I'll give the Funk Brothers a message and tell them none of them had any soul... Pete, The Funk Brothers added the Rhythm and the Beat, Marvin, Levi, David, Gladys, Ect added the soul
Popular Post Winnie :-) Posted August 11, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 11, 2014 Exactly Winnie SOUL not dance music Maybe I'm misunderstanding the scene, but as far as I can recall it's always embraced instrumentals, I'm not a big fan myself, but their place in northern (the word you're conveniently ignoring) scene is pretty much cemented 4
Mick Boyle Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Dont want start an argument here, Fully understand comments on soul is from the heart and instrumentals cant tell the story of the lost love even so the musicians do ooozzee soul out of there instruments. Personnel the vocals finish it off for me
Pete S Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Pete, The Funk Brothers added the Rhythm and the Beat, Marvin, Levi, David, Gladys, Ect added the soul No can't agree mate, just listening to something like Jr Walker playing Cleo's Mood for instance, it's soul 3
jimmy clitheroe Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Afternoon of the rhino , soul it may not be but I would have liked to have been at the casino when it broke...Paul
Guest Dave Turner Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) Afternoon of the rhino , soul it may not be but I would have liked to have been at the casino when it broke...Paul Agreed, soul it ain't but I was there and looking over the balcony when Rhino was at it's height is still the most jaw dropping sight I've ever seen in my life. Yeah, there were other floor packers at the time that produced atmos ie Bob Relf, Vel-Vets etc but Rhino took the roof off the place. If I could just have one 3 minute video clip to show it would be that, the clapping during the rise to the crescendo, and the crescendo itself about 90 seconds in was just out of this world. The record still gives me chill to this day ... and I'm a "deep soul" freak Edited August 11, 2014 by Dave Turner

An instrumental (along with that pop music with the right beat) played on the Northern Soul Scene is what we used to call northern dance music back in the eighties. It's what we used to call Soul Music back in the sixties and seventies. Tell me Green Onions don't have soul. Don't stop looking - Anne D'andrea is my contribution. I can't understand anyone liking the vocal, it sounds like something my mum would have liked!
Mick Boyle Posted August 12, 2014 Author Posted August 12, 2014 Scrub Board rather than Hold Back the Night and I don't know if its been mentioned yet Love is like an itching Funk Brothers rather than Supremes Yes the Instrumental is class but the girls make it magnificent It's what we used to call Soul Music back in the sixties and seventies. I think your mum has good taste Young Hearts Unlimited Soulful strut - has soul but Barbara Acklin makes it magic, even Dusty makes it more soulful
