jocko
Okay, having had a half a dozen or so Kent CD's drop through the letter box this week, and been driving full throttle to Denis Edwards and the Contours CD this week, off I toddled to look through Ace website to have a look at new releases and just peruse the Kent catalogue, as I do some days in a quiet moment at work, to look and admire what is a quite breath-taking contribution to keeping our wonderful music alive and documented, and more importantly, putting some money in pockets that deserve it. However I was horrified to find that it no longer had a numerical listing, only alphabetical, sending a shiver slithering slowly down my spine! Does any geek/anal retentive soul fan ever care about how sorting by artists we have, surely its label number and year of release we want (actually my LP’s and CD’s are sorted by artist, but not good for my Hammer horror pastiche dramatic effect to admit that)! Now I am sure I have looked at this many times on there and should probably know it off by heart, but I felt like my inhaler had been stolen, just before setting off to Everest base camp. Googled furiously, the shakes and sweats getting stronger by the second, and very little came up apart from the attached, the hugely wonderful SKM https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/kentuk.htm However, this raised some questions, for me anyway, particularly about some of the numbering and what was the first actual CD release. Looking at Dave’s site, it looks like proper first CD is Kent CDKEND 911 - Chi-Lites - The Best Of The Chi-Lites — 1987 Although Discogs, shows the first as Kent CDKEN 901 Jackie WIlson"Ž— Higher & Higher: 18 Soul Sensations 1986 Nothing appears to have been released between these numbers and struggling to find evidence of this Jackie Wilson CD anywhere else but Discogs, Can anyone confirm its existence and more importantly source one for under a tenner. The first under the more familiar numbering system appears to be Kent CDKEND 003 - Various Artists - Slow ‘N’ Moody, Black And Bluesy — 1984 ( I think this should be 1994) However on Dave’s site the next release is, which actually looks to have come out earlier. Kent CDKEND 004 - Dyke & The Blazers - So Sharp — 1991 So questions are, and I appreciate could have asked Ady or Dave direct but thought more fun on here, and may twist a few people to toddle off to buy some, Were there any CD’s before CDKEND911? The numbers on SKM on this series appear sporadic, but consistent with Discogs, so are there other CD’s than this, or was Ady just picking numbers out of a hat, his well known promotional technique for the early days 100 club DJ’s! Is there a CDKEND 001 or 002 ? If not why not? Is Dave’s listing complete, if not can we complete it, as this label deserves its place out there. There is a listing on Discogs but nowhere near as good so thought Dave’s was a far better reference point. I feel the need to buy up all the early releases on this, to defeat my fever from above, so any help appreciated. The initial CD of Slow Moody, is now on its way to Jocko towers, can’t believe I have never bought it, as the initial LP was quite simply stunning, and life changing for me. Once we get some more info we can maybe discuss best Kent CD and why, although I suspect Brett Franklin is sharpening his crossbow bolt at my admission of being a CD collector. I also don’t want to turn this into a discussion or critique of Dave’s great site, although I may open another thread to do this, just because it is equally deserving of credit,. Dean Rudland
My knowledge of early Kent CDs isn't great - especially when I'm not in the office - but I can help a little on the 900 series. This was Ace's CD series when we were unsure if the pesky silver things were going to take off, so everything on Ace's various labels would appear in 900, and as the soul crowd were late adopters, the Kent's were few and far between for a few years. I did wonder, and tried to look at Ace, but that was all alphabetical also, surely if you Tony and Ady get a quiet moment you could type up the numerical list again No site of that Jackie Wilson CD on the ACE site either, although it says Kent on the picture, I assume it could be just out of print? There is one suspicously like its title on Amazon, but no pictures or listing, for £150! Get searching in those drawers Thanks for time Link to comment Social source share
Dave Rimmer
The listing on my site is complete as far as it goes. The problem with Kent is the buggers keep releasing things and I haven't the time to update it every week, or even every month (Especially as they also release singles and the odd LP as well) !
