You know where I am Ian!! And..good luck with the project.

Have you thought about re-recording all the backing tracks with 80s synths and crappy drum samples?

That made me laugh.

Where's the bloody smileys gone again Mike?

Sounds really worthwhile and a project with clear appeal within the scene; hopefully the content and quality will also give it wider appeal just as a work that documents the continuing development of this genre for people who are simply interested in music in general and/or social history.

Look forward to adding it to my Amazon wish list!

Well, with those names listed as being interviewed, I for (another) one am really looking forward to watching it. Well done Mr.D :)

Why anyone would have a go at a project that is attempting to document the scene from the very people who have influenced it massively throughout the last 47 years is just way beyond me.

usually because they are sitting on their fat arses achieving nothing in life.

Right up your street Mark. A 2 hour Richard Searling interview with the mega enigmatic and media shy John Anderson? Pure gold!

Ian D  :D

John Anderson interviewed! that would be great to hear, has anybody actually ever tracked down Simon Soussant? he's another the world would love to hear from...

I have to commend your efforts to promote your products Ian, you seem to ride the negative comments on this forum and still create a hype surrounding your releases... noting short of what the sixties / seventies promotion men would do in the states for the music..I think people forget here how good some of these guys were, aggressive when needed, but they had an understanding of their target audience... and they loved an angle!! lol

its all good...

Those 60s and 70s U.S. (and to a lesser extent U.K.) promotion guys were the best in the business in my view and they're pretty much who I learnt from. You have to develop a thick skin in this game 'cos rejection happens all the time. I think a lot of it's about belief in a record or project. Some of those U.S. radio promotion guys sometimes couldn't get arrested with a record at first but they still continued to work it relentlessly city by city and state by state and sometimes those same records would go on to sell a million and become big hits.

Anyway, off to Peterborough now to interview Colin. Toodle pip!

I'll wait to see whether any of these anonymous knockers behind the security of their keyboards can ever actually manage to create anything themselves instead of just knocking other people's efforts. Fat chance of that.

If you're referring to me, I was merely having a laugh - and making a point half in jest, whole in earnest. While nobody can knock the sheer amount of work Ian Levine put into his Strange World Of Northern Soul, personally I found it pretty hard going on the eyes and ears. But he's way beyond the point of caring what anyone thinks... I was in no way implying that your project would be anything other than quality, like all the Harmless product I've seen. I look forward to seeing it when it's finished.

If you weren't referring to me, then there's no point in me claiming that I do occasionally create things, in the graphic design field... and you can disregard this whole post!

Only 33% aimed at you cover-up! :)

I did get the joke by the way but I'm nervy at the amount of work still to on the Odyssey (an apt name if I ever I heard one). I've just spent the last few weeks completing the 'Northern Soul: The Film DVD' and I did nothing creative on that at all, just all the boring stuff and that took long enough in itself.  I then agonised over the music clearances, so maybe I'm a tad sensitive about music in documentaries. :)

Rest assured, we won't be going the route of re-recording all the backing tracks with 80s synths and crappy drum samples I promise, even though that would be a lot simpler and less expensive than clearing the original through both the owners AND the publishers as there are two separate entities to clear with for DVD releases. Twice the pain and commercially punitive plus establishing the correct rights-owners is a whole other ball-game. No wonder I'm sensitive......

I used to do what could be termed 'Boring' stuff on your projects Ian,  I agreed licenses for quite a few of your Master Cuts Series back in the 9ts early 2000, you would not have heard of me, but I represented various photographers via the agencies I worked at.. I was especially proud of this one 'Rare Groove' Maser Cuts, which was taken by my then boss at PYMCA.. I did the deal, but he got the credit.. has a great track listing which included 'Coke Escovedo - I Wouldn't change a thing'

its a shame his copy went walkies when we got a few copies at the office, and I wasn't giving mine up, not for nobody... laughs :wicked:

Look forward to it Ian. I know you took me to task over my feelings on the shortcomings of the BBC4 thing, but I do relish these things and only go off on one because I care that it's done properly. That should be seen as a positive and not a negative.

Despite what you might think, I do value the history of it all, I really do......I just don't like people to be encouraged to live in the past!

Small world ay? Was this through Chromotome Design (Luke) by any chance? We were always meticulous about clearing those images.

It's only boring to me 'cos it seems to take longer to trace and clear the bloody images, then it does to have the creative idea to use 'em in the first place, so add that to the numerous other things and I end up with 95% admin and 5% creative, which is horrible for someone like me........

Luke worked from a tower block on Canary Wharf because he wanted to film the whole lot being built over 5 years with a time-programmed camera. He was fantastic. I appointed him 'cos I couldn't afford the guys who did the Andrew Lloyd Webber artwork and Luke was the closest that I could find who could achieve the look that I wanted for the series. I liked the work he did for Creation especially with an album called "Keeping The Faith" of all things! He worked out just brilliant. Running Mastercuts was the best job in the world back then for me too!

I think you need to change the title Ian, otherwise even your most ardent fan might be put off by the thought of you and your pearly whites on screen talking about you for 6 hours :D  :D

Looking forward to this immensely, should be interesting given some of the names.

Hi All,

Many thanks for your enquiries and interest. Tracks are licensed and mastered, DVDs are finished and book is being wrapped this week. I'll put up a separate thread shortly, but suffice to say, that I think this will be the most comprehensive overview of the scene yet. Will post up all info tonight touch wood!

Man, that looks fabulous! Released the day before my birthday too! I'd also like to hear a few more of your American crate-digging stories as well, Ian.

Whoops. Tried to edit Dottie and Millie and it posted LOL. Anyway that's the track-listing. Handy to have all those killers all in one place. Less dicking around LOOKING for stuff!

Oh, and the book is pencilled-in for the next couple of years. Been busy with other stuff just lately!

hello ian this was not a snipe at you but a person who split the scene in half thinkin that disco was acceptable, not in my house,

and the dj's who played pop at casino joe 90 etc I wonder why I stopped going ?.

your efforts look good and I hope I can afford a copy.

Garry

can I also say that 20,000 copies at say £30 ish would be better than 5,000 at your price and would bring you a nice return for your efforts, you would probably sell more than my estimate if cheaper due to all the colledge kids into the music nowadays.

but just an opinion.

It's the licensing that costs Gary.  We've got 230 tracks and over 10.5 hours of music but it's virtually all had to be licensed in, so it's an expensive package. I was actually arguing for a higher dealer price because the DVDs ended up costing more than I thought too but my boss held it @ under £50, so I think it's a bargain anyway. We did the Philly International package @ £29.99 and it's still selling plenty but we didn't have any advances to pay on that as we had the PIR catalogue at that point. I think a fiver per CD/DVD for that level of tracks is fantastic value. The 160 page book is an added bonus really.......

Is there any archive footage Ian or is it only interviews.

Yes. Some key archive footage which Simon located. Some vintage Chris Burton and Mary Chapman footage which hasn't been seen before I believe.......
