50's rockin' cross over stuff really turns me on actually

Sorry Karen but I just seem to knock what you have been posting lately.

It's not personal - honest!

I Just Can't Help Myself is the best of a bad bunch.

The rest can stay where they belong, in obscurity.

No soul, passion or feel good factor IMHO.

Is this typical crossover - No way!

Anyone who says that the Volumes have "no soul or passion" obviously hasn't heard "One Way Lover", "The Troubles I've Seen" and especially "Ain't That Lovin' You"....

Probably one of my favourite tracks has to be I Just Can't Help Myself...

Would you say this was a typical crossover from the rocking, steel guitar sound late 50's early 60's to the soul sound later on?

And from their almost acopela track Spell On Me....

Always been a massive fan of 'I Just Cant Help Myself' and had a copy since late 70's when it was played at the Casino. The flip is of cousre a decent tune too 'One Way Lover'

I'll back you as well karen, all the tunes i've heard by them are superb 'Ain't gonna give you up' is prob my fave but have given 'My kind of girl' & 'My road is the right road' plenty of turntable action in the past.

Cheers for that Dave.

As far as records are concerned I usually know if I'm going to like it by the intro... the I Just Can't Help Myself launches into that steel guitar rift and my ears pricked right up ph34r.gif

Tabs.. I hadn't realised you had knocked what I've posted recently

If memory serves me right "I love you" saw a release on UK Fontana.

If anyone is interested, I do have the Jay Gee distributed release on Chex, "I got love" on Twirl and "Gotta give her love" on American Arts in a sales box somehere - package deal of 75 quid the lot, plus post - if anyone is interested pm me.

Take care

'Same Old Feeling ' best by an absolute country mile for me.

First heard it on a tape from John Powney - and I've loved it ever since.

Ricc

I'm with you on that one Ricc, flip is pretty good to 'The Trouble I've Seen, brilliant double header, oh and Karen one of my favorite groups mate....lol

Mark Bicknell.

I just cant help myself. I bought a copy for a couple of quid from soulbowl, probably 1979/80. They also knocked out stuff like Joe Murphy - Its a weakness, at give away prices.

The truth is it was too soulfull to take off, and was a bit part record. It was up against real beauts like 5 and a penny - you dont know where your interest lies and theme from colourman - Teddy Vann.

Im not knocking it, as I was guilty as charged for joining the herd onto the dancefloor, but it was a time when 'soul' was not as big a priority as 'dance'.

That's interesting Andy - does that mean in that situation one person owned the rights to the name Volumes and could have anyone sing in his group?

Always a debate about this one. I've seen it on Karen 1551 with " Am I losing You" on the flip. I have spoken to several Detroit collectors including Tont Coleby and none of them reckon it is a Karen listing.

The Volumes Chex outings are produced by Tony Ewing and Popcorn Wylie . After Chex folded Tony recorded with The Four Voices known for the brilliant "Love is Getting Stronger"
