Hi All

So if you could have your own dream venue, where would it be and what would be the format ?

Had it last year Dave with Soul Or Nothing at 14 Loyd Street Manchester..The venue closed down and i lost the best place i ever found for a soul night..Also had great times with the rare all niters at the Ritz in the 90s,great to have them tunes in place like the Ritz with the huge dancefloor and big sound system...

at the moment we at BASICS have our ideal venue , the spiders web in edinburgh is perfect for what we do

For me, something old with really high ceilings and a good sized dancefloor and plenty of shabby-chic grandeur. Two rooms and maybe a 'chill out' area where you can still hear the tunes but can take a load off and enjoy a chit chat and a bevvy! Would have to be by the sea and 5 minute walk from home (hmmm, I need to move to the seaside!). Good crowd and plenty of upbeat tunes - with a little surprise here or there that is soooo good it makes your heart want to burst!

Perfect! ph34r.gif

What about a venue on the moon!?!?!

Imagine the dance moves you could do in zero gravity. You could even use moon dust instead of talc!

Bugger of a journey home in the morning though ph34r.gif

Midlands . Two rooms about the same size( maybe a small chill area too) . One room Modern Soul ( not too much house music ) the Other Northern and some crossover . Top sound system too in plush surroundings or maybe just funky ..

Deejays from all over the planet , maybe an Internet Link for them .

“Frampton Casino”

It’d have to be an old building, but decently furbished. 3 rooms. Big free hotel next door for everyone to crash in

One huge hall with a balcony.

However , all the DJ’s would have to be ‘eclectic’. 1961 to 1991. No ‘ever-greens’, dinosaurs, and has-beens.

How about: Adrian Pountain (the scenes most underrated person) & Ian Clark would come out of retirement. Mark Etheridge, Lisa Hurley, Adrian C (Market H). , Ian Wright (Chelmsford), Blair (Poke) Darran, Simon Murray, Robin Salter, Adam Bucchanan, Dick Coombes, Graham Ellis, Steve Phyllis, Jim Wensiora, Rob Wigley, Carl Fortnum, Andy Rix, Nige Parker, Gary Spencer, ….. and of course Dave Thorley playing ‘Colors & Jesse Hendrson.

Next room for; ‘modern’ (i.e. 70’s & 80’s), R&B sounding soul, club soul, circa 1968, but not northern very oldies sounds, . ‘deep funk’, cross-over, ‘boogie’, etc

Last one about 50 foot square, with no lighting, but chairs down each side for ‘puckled’ folks to sit , not communicating with anyone – music policy, the sort of sh*te you play form 11 till 2 on a Sunday afternoon after a niter.

It has 3 rooms

Room one is a technical marvel - as it changes its size dependent on the number of people in. One night it's the size of an upstairs pub room and then the next night it's blackpool ballroom.

It plays good old 60's and early 70's northern all night but somehow manages to actually plkay many of the thousands of oldies that are left gathering dust. The room has a sound sentry that when it detects the first note of 'cause you're mine' kicks the DJ up the bum and makes them use some imagination.

This room is mostly in the full size due to the crowd ph34r.gif

room 2 is for the modern Room - it consists of 3 million UV light tubes and one man hitting a large cardboard box with a padded mallet 120 times a minute - they won't know the difference anyway so no sound system needed.

Needless to say those in the modern room are banned from telling the main room they are there by making flyers that say 'northern soul' on them. The rules are they must say 'townie disco room now open'

room 3 is for the elitist. In this room you will get thrown out if you even so much as think of playing something that someone else knows. there is a hook at the side of the stage and one boo from the crowd removes the dj and places him back in his padded cell along with a copy of The Moonbillows 'cry your arms off' and a paper cone with a needle stuck through it.

Perfect venue

This all sounds perfect, all I could add is table service in room 3 and toilets the size of an army barracks. tongue.gif

Location a sunny weekender by the sea...

Room one.... Ballroom playing great uptempo/mid tempo mix of northern with leaning away from the top 500..I would hear... Live On..J.B.Troy................Dead end street.........Rain maker by the moods.....Someday...Tempest.....Little girl lost and many many more tunes that we all know but don't hear out that much...stuff that keeps the floor full without turning into a northern soul wedding

No talc...

soft drinks only(the bar is the first option for some and not the music)....waiters only..

No mad spinning guys who shower me in sweat

Quality sound system that lets off the smell of rotten farts if Wigan pop tunes come on

Large wooden dancefloor with soft lighting..

An option to stay open for 3 days if the medication is good

Room two...

deep soul ballads from 60s/early 70s..

big chairs/sofa

cocktail bar

record dealers with buy one get one free offer..

room 3..

Modern/crossover and deep disco :D ..

White white teeth

Bling

White wine and ice buckets

More lights than Piccadilly circus

Room four...

Monster oldies room..

talc

vest

pants with more flare than my mums curtains

mops for sweat spillage

Happy hour bar for 24 hours with a special offer on the mild

Djs who just love the mic and shout "come on you fu"kers lets have it" after each tune

Buckets of marching power on every table with large spoons

chill out room to iron beer towels and change the bag,its full and smells a bit laugh.gif

sound system that cuts out if tempo drops below 150 mph...

Manifesto is just a mid tempo plodder in this room

Room 5..

Mod/Rnb/popcorn/jazz/ska/club soul

room 6..

Scooter boys room...

The snake

First aid room for the fighters

Girls who look harder than the boys

No Mods

Dancefloor swamped with beer and blood and teeth

Bootleg record dealers that make the Kray twins look like big girls..

Men singing that song out loud "we were made for each other"

Room 7

This is the car park for the Y2K soul crowd and dogging crew..:D ..Just crank up the carstereo and drop the pants..

This venue would give me a chance to see all my freinds under one roof..It would say on the flyer something for everyone...

On the last night its everone in the same big room and party time...Watch the mods two step to 80s soul and see mr bling trying a back flip...

Tickets on sale soon for the greatest weekender..

There was a CD swop a while ago, and your CD contained what I would call 'ambrosia' , every track a peach. What the 'scene' needs is people like you who know a great tune and don't get bogged down in the bolotics!

  • 2 weeks later...

I asked this question in the first place, as I was really interested. Malayka and I have been think about promoting a venue in the UK for the past year, and at last we have found a great venue at Aston Villa FC. We can't say it is going to be the best venue ever, that is for others to judge, but we do want to put on a venue that people will enjoy, hear great DJ's. playing their best records, from all over europe. That in effect is the music policy, it's up to the DJ's and the crowd to decide what direction it goes in. So Malayka and I hope that with this event we will be able to offer many of the elements, mentioned above.

It will be run on a monthly basis, over 2 killer rooms of about the same size. Fab sound systems, secure parking for 300 cars. The event will run from 8pm-2am, with bars in both rooms. Hope you will come along and check it out. Launch nite is Nov 4th

best venue I have been to The Winding Wheel. They were approached few years ago with ther intention of putting all-nighters on again and were pretty much up for it. All-nighters in this area last couple of years for other scenes as well.

It's the perfect venue...large 700ish room, one for 400, another for around 150/200 and a smaller room for records :D

For me that marked the end of the Stafford time, when you look at the line up. We very much all went our own different ways after that.chesterfield702.jpg(post-3008-1155464293

Well i like my dad would love to see the old Wirrina used again although be likely and turned for 1 night into an all nighter and the policy is Northern soul from the old Wirrina days with DJ's Smudge, Tony Dellar, Jonah and Paul Donnerlly at end.

I will request Paul plays Sam and Kitty - I've Got Something good which is a classic never hear it these days and last time i heard it was a few years ago in Whittlesey when Paul DJ'ed and called it a Wirrina classic.
