Guest Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) How long has this record been known to the UK Soul fraternity? It came out on two labels Eastern and Soulspot about 1972 according to the labels.Just had a look and there are loads of copies on Popsike. If it is so plentiful, I wonder why has it not been popular for years on the scene/venues etc?Are all these Popsike copies originals, or has it been repressed? Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 It has been a well known record for years, originally on the modern scence. But as the northern crowd has become more accepting of the 70's type tune its got plenty of play over the years there also. I really dont understand why it gets the price it does, its not a rare record.
Kjw Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I think one person managed to get hold of the existing stock of both label runs When they're gone they're gone and the price will rise - same as what happened with Betty Lloyd and Frederick Hymes
Steve G Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I first heard this via Soul Sam, early 90s…….it was, for a while, hard to find, but as already said, someone has found copies……I hate it when that happens 1
Mark R Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Soul Sam Bretby mid 90's was where I first heard it! Cheers, Mark R
Glynthornhill Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Jason Koening of St Loius , Missouri found a box load... He has been steadily drip feeding them via Ebay on his I d ' s : funkyou! and funkyousounds on a monthly basis - still seems to command the same price tag on a regular basis . As for ' not rare ' ? - what constitutes ' rare ' - many records are not ' rare ' in real terms but command hefty prices . Meanwhile I have some rare private press albums that only saw runs of 100 / 150 that don't command high prices - the strange world of record dealing ...... 3
John Reed Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) There was a previous thread and I always thought Richard Searling played this from either the late 80's to maybe 1990 - the early Southport weekenders. I'm sure he played it before mid 92, as I stopped going out/buying records then. Edited July 18, 2014 by John Reed
Modernsoulsucks Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Yes I got a copy from Larry Ray in Detroit around 89/90.Sold it to Richard.Another step in my purpose to completely undermine the modern scene.ROD 2
Russ Vickers Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 When it was first played it was considered a very rare record, the Soul Pot copy was the first to be played, I heard it at Soul Essence & was lucky to pick up one of those very elusive first copies, I remember playing it at the 100 Club, probably early 9ts & quite a few coming to have a look, was of course a big record for me at the Uptown Down South Soul Nights & Nighters. I think it was Shifty who found the first Eastern copy, which at the time caused a bit of a stir. As previously stated its only more recently that they have become more readily available. Not sure how many copies have turned up, but if it has given the record more exposure then that's a good thing. Best Russ
Dave Pinch Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 jason started letting the soul pot copies out around 6 years ago..before then it was selling for £1000.. the last 12 months or so have seen a few eastern copies appear tho....he`s been listing one of each per month over the last 12 months... ..i dont think he`s got either on his latest auctions.. maybe he`s done with them...seems to be listing a lil major williams every month now tho
