Hi Juddy, that would be Warner Bros.

Thanks!

It seems to me that there's a whole pop/white/jazz/somethin' type of northern stuff that's gone in and outta favor in the UK that I'd think of, pardon the expression if it offends anybody, as 'cocktail northern'.

The ones that spring to mind immediately are "Don't Pity Me," Susan Rafey's "Hurt So Bad" and "Big Hurt," Gloria Grey "It's a Sweet World," that Lionel Hampton thing "Little Annie" somethin'... and billions more I don't know, of course.

Is there a word for that kind of sound? (Besides, as I'm sure some will posit, "pop garbage" and the like... )

Philosophizin' over,

The words are in fact Northern Soul. Not pop. The Joannie Sommers record is as good and in fact better than most northern soul records. About number 10 in the best singles ever in my opinion. Susan Rafey's version of Hurt So Bad is absolutely stunning as well.

I,LL SECOND THAT :shades:

BOTH CLASSY TUNES ALTHOUGH

LITTLE ANTONY VERSION VOCALS ARE FAR BETTER :shades:

I'm completely in love with that Joanie Summers right now, and have been with the Rafeys for a while...

Just wondering if there's a 'school' of northern that those jazz-leaning/northern-beat 'chunes get lumped into.

aiight,

Which is what it's all about as far as I'm concerned. I just like a record on it's merit without having to do an authenticity check on the artist.

Oh don't be soft, they are two completely different songs, and Sue Lynne is pretty average anyway :shades:

I think I must have had too much sun, agreeing with Pete twice in the same day / decade;

Joannie Sommers is one of the finest 'Northern' tunes ever. The discussing of it's genre or authenticity of it, etc, is a futile, vacuus waste of time, 'like putting wheels on a tomato' . Listening to JS is like making love to a beautiful woman, her race shouldn't be an issue (sorry, came over a bit Swiss Tony there)

picked up a dvd at local soul night of her doing dont pity me live on a compilation of live clips

will try and find out which one it was and what it is called

Try a PM to Pete-S on here, his got one and the Little Anthony clip on here is on it too, he'll probably copy it for you for a nominal fee :shades:

I think the heat must be getting to you lot over Blighty way - don't think anyone's said anything but gorgeous heaps of adoration about that record! Not to mention that you're the first person to correct my spelling of the name... :shades:

It's only 87F in Pittsburgh,

Joannie Summers - magic!!! thats the only category it needs to be put in.

Susan Rafey is good but not as good as Little Anthony ( just got one off Ebay - made my day! )

Joannie Sommers...............................WOW! From the first drum beat intro' and "Don't pity me, babeh. Don't pity meee..........then things REALLY start taking off.........!! Joannie's velvelty tones and the musical arrangement send shivers down my spine every time i hear this wonderful song! A classic, 100%, for sure!!

Lucky person me got a Joanie Summers demo for my birthday a few years back. Still love it . Also had a copy of Sue Lynne at the Casino with a national radio libary stamp on it.

Sold it for £17 then got one about ten years back as another birthday pressie

Stange thread this, someone comes on saying they love Joannie Summers (how can you not?) and wondering if that well-produced, often major-label pop northern soul sound was an acknowledged sub-genre or not. No one slagged it off yet everyone defended it!

I love that style of music myself, soul or not. It'd be nice to have a definitive CD of that sort of sound, any out there?

Hi Steve always remember you being mad on both these at 'The Saints' if memory serves me right, think I 'obtained' that copy for your birthday - great days!

Played JS at Bury last week, sounded great in there and it packed the floor. Nuff said!

It might be Northern Soul but it is still pop  and as good a northern soul as it is I'm sick of f*cking hearing it, like listening to the top twenty countdown for don't know how many years....and still at number 8....Joannie Summers!:D
