Popular Post Steve G Posted June 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 16, 2014 Oh RC will be all over it if it gets sold for a big number……but us soul collectors have always been the poor cousins where they are concerned. 5
Linda4me Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Congratulations Sir,this has surely become the most fantastic find in years a true rareity and good luck to you this will one day succeed Frank Wilson in the value stakes must be a one off Im still shaking and pleased for you this IS the holy grail of Northern Soul Edited June 16, 2014 by linda4me 1
Pete S Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Oh RC will be all over it if it gets sold for a big number……but us soul collectors have always been the poor cousins where they are concerned. They'll probably credit whoever auctions it with discovering it and not mention the chap who did find it 2
Winsford Soul Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 If 150 SS collectors all bought a ticket for £100, assuming the seller would take £15,000 right now, then the winning ticket drawn gets to keep the record. Hands up how many of us would risk a ton to have a go?Count me in if it happensSteve 2
Prophonics 2029 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Out if interest is the version the same as the US single of OLIITP and not the alternative LP version?
Sheep Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Thinking about it. Nobody should own this and nobody should play it. I suggest that we all own it, well 100 people, ie raise a fund, amount to be agreed and it should be placed in a Museum for all to admire with dismay... Edited June 16, 2014 by sheep

Prophonics 2029 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I would like to buy it and put it in my USA made jukebox........... 1
45cellar Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Only known surviving copy after 48 Years of searching by all Iconic Double sider Looks to be Mint (In any condition it would cause a stir) Priceless, where do you start to put a realistic Value on this one off find.
Orotava Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) I do love a happy ending... Edited June 16, 2014 by Orotava
Cunnie Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 They'll probably credit whoever auctions it with discovering it and not mention the chap who did find it Exactly why it should be sold on here (if sold at all) & not on Manships auction. The owner first inquired about it on this site, it's authenticity was confirmed on here so why on earth would you want someone else to receive all the glory & a hefty 20% commission on it. With a record like this history will be made wherever it is sold & the big collectors will all have a maximum they will pay wherever it gets sold also. 1
dthedrug Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Has anybody informed Mick Smith yet ! :hatsoff2:HI ALL.... I WAS WAITING FOR HIM TO CONTACT ME, DAVE K 1
Guest oldsoulgit Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Saw it on here last night. Hardly slept a wink! After this ANYTHING is possible. Sean Like England winning the World Cup
Mike Lofthouse Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Like England winning the World Cup Probably more likely to find a 'stock' copy of Frank Wilson than that! 3

The only thing is Cunnie, if it was advertised just on here, wouldn't it be seen by only a limited amount of soul collectors? I know Manship earns his pound of flesh via commission, but he seems to have a much wider buyer base and audience, and of course seems to gets top dollar on most rare items.
Gene-r Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Thinking about it. Nobody should own this and nobody should play it. I suggest that we all own it, well 100 people, ie raise a fund, amount to be agreed and it should be placed in a Museum for all to admire with dismay... Could this then make the Darrell Banks UK stock copy the first soul record to be owned under shared ownership, or even to have shares in it?
Pete S Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Has anybody informed Mick Smith yet ! I texted him this morning but he'll just shrug his shoulders when he reads it :-) 2
Sheep Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 It has been muted, that knowing it was in a Decca employees possession, there maybe more than one, ie a lot ?
Cunnie Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 The only thing is Cunnie, if it was advertised just on here, wouldn't it be seen by only a limited amount of soul collectors? I know Manship earns his pound of flesh via commission, but he seems to have a much wider buyer base and audience, and of course seems to gets top dollar on most rare items. It won't be just advertised on here though. It's already plastered all over facebook for a start & I bet (assuming it's sold) that the winner already knows about it. News like this travels fast. 1
Sheep Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Could this then make the Darrell Banks UK stock copy the first soul record to be owned under shared ownership, or even to have shares in it? Yes, I think it would, but the importance of this find, in my opinion, justifies for it to be in the public domain under shared ownership and for ll to see.
Pete S Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 It won't be just advertised on here though. It's already plastered all over facebook for a start & I bet (assuming it's sold) that the winner already knows about it. News like this travels fast. I posted it first thing, with the photos, the number of shares it's had is phenomenal, in fact you could say it's "gone viral". Always wanted to say that. Don't know why, it's nearly as bad as saying "choon". Needless to say, if that was mine I'd have already taken the 10K I was offered for it earlier 3
dthedrug Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 HI ALL.... DOES THIS MEAN THE LONDON DEMO & THE RED & WHITE STATESIDE DEMO WILL INCREASE IN VALUE DAVE K
Dave Moore Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 in fact you could say it's "gone viral". Always wanted to say that. Don't know why, it's nearly as bad as saying "choon".No it's not, don't kid yourself Pete. "choon" is about the most annoying word in the English language.Rgards,Dav 2
Winsford Soul Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 HI ALL.... DOES THIS MEAN THE LONDON DEMO & THE RED & WHITE STATESIDE DEMO WILL INCREASE IN VALUE DAVE KGood evening Dave. by the law of averages they have both been trumped by the issue so I would assume that they have now decreased in said valueSteve 2

Simsy Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 why on earth would you want someone else to receive all the glory & a hefty 20% commission on it. Because Manship is the Sotheby's of NS vinyl auctions. I do agree with the points you made, but part of me wants to witness the fanfare of a JM number on this disc, if it isn't sold already. Can you imagine the 'sizzle'? !!!
Pete S Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Because Manship is the Sotheby's of NS vinyl auctions. I do agree with the points you made, but part of me wants to witness the fanfare of a JM number on this disc, if it isn't sold already. Can you imagine the 'sizzle'? !!! I really can't contain my excitement. Oh hang on, yes I can after all. 1
Labeat Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I need somewhere safe for it now.....under the mattress, in the airing cupboard I think I knew it was the one but just did not want to believe it with my own eyes, bit shocked tbh! Neither under mattress or airing cupboard.... you'll warp it & if you get 10k at auction don't buy a car... it'l depreciate to 5k Stick it in a Swiss bank vault
Labeat Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 No it's not, don't kid yourself Pete. "choon" is about the most annoying word in the English language. Rgards, Dav Ah, but "choons" help you breath more easily
davidwapples Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Have you played it yet? Be awful to find out its a mis pressed record lol seriously congratulations on finding it

Pete S Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 So is that official Pete, that 10K has already been offered for it? Yeah but to me, when it's nothing to do with me! I just posted it up in facebook and said it was the real deal. If someone had offered me 10K for a record it would have been done and dusted already :-)
Gene-r Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Good evening Dave. by the law of averages they have both been trumped by the issue so I would assume that they have now decreased in said value Steve Just the sight and thought of the London stock copy seems to make the London demo a little insipid right now! The Yank Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 This is quite a find ! Out of curiosity, why was the London issue withdrawn and how did "Open The Door ..." end up on Stateside ?
Biggordy Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Anyone want to buy my late Dad's house? I'm due a share of the proceeds, about 30 grand, and can buy this then
Rick Cooper Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 NickFantastic find, well done. Darrell Banks is the obvious mega rarity ,but what is in the rest of the large collection mentioned at the start of this thread. A nice run of mint mid 60 s London releases would add up to a fair few pounds. Maybe once everyone has calmed down you could let us know what else you found.Rick 1
Northern Soul Uk Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Sorry answer in previous post. Edited June 16, 2014 by Northern Soul UK
Cover-up Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Personally, I think it's nobody's business what he paid for it. 50p, £50, £500... He said it was part of collection anyway. Obviously everybody on here is very soul focused, but London label collectors are a rabid bunch, who aren't very keen on demos. I would have thought ebay would be the only way to sell this, to get the full coverage and exposure it warrants. If two soul fans want to offer £10k on a Manship auction, it'll go for £10k. If it got listed on ebay, both those soul fans would bid. Plus a whole load of rock'n'roll collectors and wealthy Russians and Japanese brain surgeons and investment bankers who earn £10k in a single day. There's a whole world of eccentric and rich nutcases out there who've never even heard of John Manship (sorry, John...) Congratulations Nick, just goes to show, never say never. Bet your PM box is burning red hot... 2
Gene-r Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) Obviously everybody on here is very soul focused, but London label collectors are a rabid bunch, who aren't very keen on demos. Probably stems from the fact that most London collectors, particularly those who have little or no interest in Soul music, collect the label ostensibly for the Rock n' Roll side of it, and it's known that RnR collectors always favour stock copies over demos. Kegsy Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 It won't be just advertised on here though. It's already plastered all over facebook for a start & I bet (assuming it's sold) that the winner already knows about it. News like this travels fast. The other factor, on the sale of this is, its probably limited UK to collector demand. How many U.S./Japanese buyers will be interested compared to the Motown etc. "full set" collectors that wanted Frank Wilson, or some of the Shrine stuff that John has sold recently ?. 1
Kegsy Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 . If someone had offered me 10K for a record it would have been done and dusted already :-) I wondered how much it would be for you to actually clean a record before you posted it out
Northern Soul Uk Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Just the sight and thought of the London stock copy seems to make the London demo a little insipid right now! and every other record 1
Denbo Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Nick hasn't even hinted at selling it yet, has he??? I know if it was me, I'd NEVER sell it. And I think I'd probably retire from collecting if I was the one to have found it. I mean, as a British label collector, what else would there be to keep me collecting??? 2
Premium Stuff Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Nick hasn't even hinted at selling it yet, has he??? I know if it was me, I'd NEVER sell it. That's defeatist - I expected more
Popular Post Kev Cane Posted June 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 16, 2014 When it was discussed on here a while back as to who's version was the best DB or J.J. Barnes, I said............................. Darrell Banks is the epitome of Northern Soul - for me it defines the whole thing.... ....A 60's UK release (on the iconic Stateside label) ....A legendary promo only release on an earlier UK label (London) ....A non Motown Detroit release (on Revilot ) ....A fantastic double sider with Open the Door (maybe the best double sider ever) ....A truly great Soul Man and Singer........................................One 45 ...anyone asks about Northern Soul - give them a copy Now we can add a single UK issue copy on London that has been hidden away for just shy of 50 years!!!!!!! Have told this story before on SS, its still so vivid and tells you just how good the record is, me and my mate Gaz Simon were in Canada at Martin Koppel's in 1989, we went to an industrial estate in Toronto where Martin had a unit that was wall to wall, floor to roof 7 inch vinyl, 4 coloured guys had come up from New York to buy Soul records and Martin was playing them a pile he thought they might be interested in on a small deck on the counter, me and Gaz were buried in dust and vinyl, then we heard the immortal intro to Open the door, after about a minute the guys were whooping and high 5ing and man hugging, I will take that memory with me until I die, its still so vivid Kev 5
Mace Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Nick hasn't even hinted at selling it yet, has he??? I know if it was me, I'd NEVER sell it. The ones you still haven't got??? ;o) 1
Denbo Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 To Premium Stuff and Mace: I know, I know, it was a rash statement, from the heart and not the head 2
