Sorry not soul but of interest to some..

I’m working on a project which is doomed to failure but I was intending to compile every UK Island A & B side, not quite sure why, but when I was collecting the label I managed to get about 60% of it done, I think now I can get maybe 95% done…anyway more on that if I ever do it, it’s just that this got me playing through lots of the releases and I thought the Ska tracks from the era’s peak (1964-65) would make a great compilation…and I was right.  This is the cream of Island’s Ska output, earliest tracks are from 1964 and they end around the middle of 1966 when the sound is unquestionably turning into Rocksteady.  A lot of the early 1966 music, I like to call this “Rudeboy Ska” as it has a disntinctly different flavor to it than what went just a few months previously — listen to The Wailers, Melodians and Bob Andy tracks and you’ll see what I mean.  Anyway, nearly two hours worth of belters here, I’ve dubbed off the original records if no CD version was available so apologies for snap crackle and pop in places.

Hi Pete.

I know that this is not directly related to your thread but I imagine that you are aware of the great stuff released by Soul Jazz Records, which features music from the same period? I'm a great fan of the 'Dynamite series' - and the fact the label insists on making the music available on vinyl too.

Best regards.

Yes I had all those Rob, well I still do in itunes, but the Dynamite series was seriously overrated and the last couple are unlistenable.  Their Studio One releases, on the other hand, were brilliant I thought.

The Studio 1 releases are a bit hit and miss too.  The Roots and Dub ones are excellent.  So are the Ska ones.  But the Rocksteady album only has 3 or 4 actual rocksteady tracks on it, rest are early reggae.

Shouldn't this be in SOJ anyway? :)

No the rules were changed for podcasts because hardly anyone was seeing them when posted in audio / visual, so now they go in all about the soul as more of a news item.

It's quite hard to define Studio One rocksteady though I think, because they were making records in 67 that could have come from 69, the whole sound is kind of their own...whereas with a T Isle or Amalgamated record from the same period, it's pure rocksteady.  Say something like "Moving Away" - is it RS or Reggae?

Some good tracks here ....................remember goin' down Porobello Rd in the sixties and picked up " James Bond " and "Phoenix City" by Roland Alphonso  singles for a snip, where they are now :g:  :g:  :g:  :g:

Well James Bond is a tough cookie to find and is £100+ these days, but you can pick up a Phoenix City for under £20 still (Doctor Bird label)
