Popular Post Pete S Posted June 13, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 13, 2014 You know when you have records for years and years and never bother playing them...here's one...on UK Atco...how good is this??? (UK title Look At That Girl) 11
Kris Holmes Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 got this too, never play it, think i might pluck it off the shelf.......
Kev Cane Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Always loved it Pete, got it on a 45 and the Love Man album Kev
Liamgp Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 (edited) Originally done by the McCoys as "I Got To Go Back (And Watch That Little Girl Dance)", it was on Otis's 'Love Man' album which was a collection of tracks compiled by Steve Cropper after Redding's death. As usual, he always made interesting choices when he did cover versions. Edited June 13, 2014 by ElGeePee
Guest MBarrett Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Love seeing this thread. I put Otis at the top of every soul poll. For me the closest a human voice has come to being a musical instrument. I don't think a bad note ever came out of his mouth. I'm a fan!!
Geeselad Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I went mental over this, got two copies, one french I think, has it ever been played, was a wheel tune?

Citizen P Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Give that a play now and then. Another well worth a play is " Demonstration".. 2

Liamgp Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 If you look at the credits it was actually written by Otis. There must be a story as to how it was picked up by the McCoys. It's credited Berns/Barry (Bert Berns and Jeff Barry) on the McCoys single, which was recorded in 1966 and which is exactly the same song. Otis Redding made his version in 1967. I suspect someone didn't look into the matter of writing credits closely enough at ATCO. 1

The McCoys version and the Otis version have slightly different lyrics. However, the single credits Otis Redding, but the LP credits Randall Stewart and Edward Morris. All very confusing.
Ceejay Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Nothing Otis Redding has ever done should be classed as under-rated!!!! Fact!!!
Mike Lofthouse Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Always completely ignored by Northern Soul fans - don't know why. But since 'Loving By The Pound' quite a few things seem to get an outing - don't know why. 1
Soulfinger Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 One of my all-time favorites. The intro is just stunning. Never heard it played out. I simply don't know why it isn't more popular.

But since 'Loving By The Pound' quite a few things seem to get an outing - don't know why. I agree. If something like "Hard to Handle" was previously unreleased then it would be a massive NS tune. I love Otis too. The best ever imo!!!
Pete S Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 Me and my big mouth, I was going to keep this but I forgot to take it off Discogs and someone bought it for £10! 1
Tobytyke Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 fantastic record. and to be fair to eddy edmunds? he used to play it most weeks on his sunday show on solar radio
Only Dreaming Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Eddy Edmunds put me onto it about 10 years ago via his website. Fantastic track alright and glad that it's still only a tenner. Also got sampled by The Eels on Mr E's Beautiful Blues Dave

Pete S Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 (edited) I first heard this around 1972 but it wasn't this Otis version, it was this one...didn't find out it was a cover until years later (*edit, looking the LP sleeve, it would have been 73/74) Edited June 14, 2014 by Pete S

IMHO Quite a few don't. IMHO MB
Sceneman Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 times change and your perceptions change . records from the 60s that were outright shite and never sold are now revered collectors items on big money ,cos few sold and not many are around
The Tempest Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Always been a York Soul Club favourite and included on an Anniversary CD a few years ago On his Love Man album Its a cracker !!
Andy Rix Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 I agree it is fantastic .... I got one a couple of years ago for £10 The McCoys version is available on the Ace CD 'Da Doo Ron Ron' .. songs of Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry An alternate take by Otis ... which I actually think is much better that the released version is available on the Ace CD 'The Bert Berns story ... Mr Success Vol 2' (CDCHD1251) Andy
Guest aintgotit Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Only heard this fairly recently when my mate greg played it to me. Loved it from the off. Played it to our lass as it reminded me of my first seeing her doing her thing on the dancefloor at kings hall .she loved it too.
Keeper Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Direct Me another overlooked one and Demonstration as my comrade mentioned earlier
NEV Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Can't believe his version of satisfaction hasn't been played out on the northern scene... It fits better than some of the odd ball stuff being played lol
Kev Cane Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 How about this for a mid-tempo shuffler, its got the lot for me, brilliant Kev 2
