Gene Chandler

Recommended Posts

Following on from the corrie thread and I got to thinking what a great artist he is, and tried to come up with my favorites.....not easy.

Genes covered the full range of soul styles, from Northern to Deep to Ballad to Pop hits, so which gets your vote?

For me its between the following:-

"You threw a lucky punch"

"Mr big shot"

"Familiar footsteps"

"Think nothing about it"

"Candy"

"Dont have to be lying babe"

but in an hours time it will be different.

BH

PS. Classic line from Corrie, Tyrone Dobbs "Gene Chandler who's she then" priceless :yes:

Hard to pick a favourite, Blake.

Awesome repertoire!

Always Loved:

I Fooled You This Time

To Be A Lover

After The Laughter

I Wont Need You

To Choose

Suicide

If You Cant Be True

Nothing Can Stop Me

Bet You Never Thought

Does She Have a Friend

Let Me Make Love To You

For The Sake Of The Memories

I've said it many times before, next to Willie Tee, Gene Chandler had the slickest delivery ever on a good lyric.

So true Sean, I remember the conversation we had in the Downbeat lounge in April re "You threw a lucky punch" I said I'd never heard it played out anywhere and wanted to rectify that.............."That day, oh yeah when you walked away" ..... job well done!

I noticed a few have listed 'Just a fool for you' as there fav ... but for me it's the B side of this record that has got to be my fav Gene Chandler record ... 'BUDDY AINT IT A SHAME' ... very different to his usual style ... just shows what a versatile singer he was!!

If you don't know it ... be sure to give it a listen... it's tip top

You've all forgotten "She's just a pretty thing...way hay hay" :D

Interviewed him on 24-7 a few years ago, and that was the catalyst for him coming over to the UK - a commensurate professional he was too....having done his vinyl output, let's not forget his productions either on Andrew Williams Bamboo label, Wand, Mister Chand etc......I mark the old geezer on Corrie right - Gene Chandler a leg end indeed!

love his seventies output, particulary you take the living, briliant crossover track is I wont need you-,also love nothing can stop me ,which brings big memories of the casino flooding back.

Saw him at Hinkley,he was bloody brilliant ,done the Duke of Earl all dressed up with cape on etc, good memories.

Reckon he is one of the most underrated soul singers. I remember when Duke Of Earl came out, number one in the USA, not really used to much doo wop over here then. I thought he would be a one hit wonder, but he went on to be a sublime soul singer.

Incredibly difficult to pick a favourite.

Nothing Can Stop Me, Good Times and A Song Called Soul will always take me back to the Scene. Great dancers.

Love his ballads like What Now, Bless Our Love and Think Nothing About It. He seemed, like Major Lance, to work so well with Curtis Mayfield.

I guess my favourite dance tracks would be Bet You Never Thought and I Can Take Care Of Myself; and I really like Without You Here, as played by Steve Plumb on Mark Bicknell's radio show, magnificent imo.

Nice one Geoff!

I played 'Without you here' as a shout out to all at Soul-Source forum cos we'd just had a similar thread a month or so ago about our Gene Chandler favourite tunes!

FINALLY............wonder how many DJ's played out 'Nothing can stop me' this weekend and dedicated it to everyone who watches Corrie? Well i did anyway but mine was only a US Constellation white demo

Cheers
