Chris Turnbull Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Can anyone help identify this for me - Sam was playing a 12" of 'What does it take to win your love' around 1992/3, no vocal, just a fully instrumental sax version which always sounded great played out. Definitely a 12" as I remember looking at the decks. Would guess a fairly modern release at that time. I have a feeling it got a mention in an old Manifesto or similar but can't find the article anywhere. Have been through all the versions on Youtube, etc, but can't find it. Cheers, Chris.
Guest Ivor Jones Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 The only 12" version of this track I know is the version by Tony Rome on Kency Records ( it's a green/ yellow coloured label)...... There is an instrumental b side but not sure if it's the version you're looking for..... It's from 82 I think. Kind of bass heavy mid tempo version. I can forward a soundfile if that helps ? Best, Ivor
Chris Turnbull Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Hi Ivor, thanks for the info - not this version though, the one Sam was playing was faster with more of a drum machine type backing, and sounded to me more modern than 82 - an early 90's indie at a guess
Chris Turnbull Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Have just had a flash that this may have been called something like 'Crackstep 12"', but can't find any reference to that on the web
Benji Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) Maybe Kenny G? Here's the vocal take. Flip of the 12" is instrumental. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsCX1mF-fsA Edited June 10, 2014 by Benji
Eddie Hubbard Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 This is the Crack Steppin side , it's a vocal though ...
Chris Turnbull Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Thanks Benji and Eddie Definitely not Kenny G - much more punchy than that Not Crack Steppin either - definitely a version of Jr Walker's 'What does it take to win your love' - Crack Steppin probably a red herring on my part Anyone able to ask Sam himself?
Grumpyfella Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Hi Chris I remember him playing the Bay Brothers but that's a vocal... There is a housey thing that samples it but not sure if Sam would have played that...he may have done....was by someone called ??Soul Collective? I know its black label with white text! I will see if I can find the housey thing as I got given it....played once and filed Cheers Phil
Kevin Jones Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I will be seeing Sam in the week and will ask him then. I will post his answer. Kev

Chris Turnbull Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 I am sure I had it on a tape or Cd or something. Quiet a nice version. but where. Was it a wigan casino dave evison cd Sorry it's they bay brothers.. Thanks, but definitely not the Bay Brothers version - much more modern (comparatively) and punchy sounding
Chris Turnbull Posted October 27, 2014 Author Posted October 27, 2014 Still trying to find out what this was - anyone able to find out from Sam now he appears to be up and about again? NOT Bay Bros, Kenny G, Tony Rome or Kellie Evans! I know it is mentioned in Sam's column in an old Manifesto but can't locate it Cheers, Chris.
Chris Turnbull Posted October 27, 2014 Author Posted October 27, 2014 It wasn't this then Chris Hi Andy, thanks but not that one - meant to include it in the 'no' list As above it was much more modern, definitely a 12" and probably late 80's / early 90's by the sound of it. Also fully instrumental if my memory serves me right - just a blaring sax solo 1
Bazm Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Hi Chris Played this at the Orwell many moons ago and Sam liked it, it's an album only track so that may explain the 12" conection 1
Chris Turnbull Posted October 27, 2014 Author Posted October 27, 2014 or Buddy Miles and the California Raisins Thanks Baz but neither of those - going to have to go up in the loft and dig out old Manifestos to find Sam's reviews as I'm sure it got a mention in there Again much more 'modern' sounding than either of these, though of course Buddy Miles is a fairly recent recording Faster paced and more dance oriented
Chris Turnbull Posted October 27, 2014 Author Posted October 27, 2014 Motherlode, perchance ?? No, again much more modern i.e. with a drum machine type backing and just instrumental I seem to recall All the other versions are essentially the same laid back kinda vibe but this was more punchy
soulmac Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Garland Jeffreys Epic 45 from 1982, only have a 7" promo so don't know if "B" side is an instrumental.
Chris Turnbull Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 Garland Jeffreys Epic 45 from 1982, only have a 7" promo so don't know if "B" side is an instrumental. Thanks but it wasn't anyone that well known - more a dance type 12"
kevinsoulman Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 (edited) 12" promo maybe Edited October 28, 2014 by kevinsoulman
