Very glad to see Bob getting some love here. RIP.

Posted

I held out hope it was just a rumour or prank.  But, if his sister told some of his friends, then there is no hope.  TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE news.  We were acquaintences, and exchanged a few records and MP3s together, and, of course, corresponded on threads and PMs here just about every day for the last several years.   So, I feel that I've lost a good friend.  Very shocking, indeed!  I didn't know he was even sick.  Or, was it an accident?  I do see from that 3 days old photo that Bob has taken on a lot of weight recently.

People in contact with the family, please give details, when you can.  Thanks.

So, so sorry to hear this!

I spoke to Bob a few times on here although didn't know him well. He was incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to share that vast knowledge. A massive loss.

RIP Bob.

Saddened and shocked, even though I only pop in now and again. I didn't know Bob but I always enjoyed his contributions on here, knowledgeable is an under statement and I loved his dry wit.

i'll really miss him on here. RIP Bob.

Shellshocked..a legend who has gone way too soon!

His work is far from finished, so so sad to hear this.

Had so much contact with Bob,enquiries, saless, banter, how to find out who's bidding against you,do you know this etc etc...

But despite not ever meeting Bob,finding out a few yr back that this very knowledgeable fella was younger than me is what makes me feel so sad.. A young man who still had so much to give :(

Very sad news. Helped me out a couple of times by bidding on my behalf and acting as postman with USA eBay sellers who would not post to the UK.

He had also got the hang of the British sense of humour on here - sometimes!

Enjoyed reading many of his post's.

RIP

Knew of him rather than knew him, to say will miss his posts seems shallow against what others he was close to have lost, but I will. Sincere thoughts to those close to him.

yet another one who only knew of him on here, not personally....the irony is, people forge friendships and understandings, on this faceless page and amongst our likes, bob, was a great orator...you get the feel for who the real sparks are, those who are on the same wavelength. bob appreciated informed comment and opinion...feather in your cap if he tipped a nod to your articulation. guess we have to pick up the pieces and carry on gaining a greater understanding of the music and it's contributors without his enormous input..his ilk are becoming fewer with each passing year...his mantle is passed on suddenly..like the artists we have admired who have passed on, his light has moved to a higher plain.....some serious librarian upstairs now! god rest your soul, bob.

I'll be a bit lonely here without my fellow Chicagoan amongst all you Brits.  He was so young.  I wasn't prepared at all for this.  I'm glad I got to know him at least to the degree I did.  He was a very nice guy.

Ho no not Bob a legend will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him a fountain of knowledge and a great guy

Our thoughts & prayers are with Bobs family and close friends at this sad time..Thanks for all your help and guidance mate

I am totally shocked by this news, I never got to meet Bob but chatted a lot and swapped files with him, and he was a mine of information, and more to my surprise was several years younger than me and the majority on here, but with the distance from the politics of the UK scene seemed somewhat more sensible and mature in his outlook, Also his sleuthing of artists long thought forgotten and lost will be a legacy many of us could only hope to leave behind. This really is a sad loss to our community, and my condolences go out to his family and hope that the high esteem he held among people he'd never met provides some comfort to his family and close ones.

You'll miss your friend Rob - but you'll never need to feel lonely with all us Brits. You've more Brit friends than you could shake a stick at.

Your friend.

Very glad to see Bob getting some love here. RIP.

Only just read this tragic news - very sad indeed. When me and Dicky were in Chicago a few years ago we stayed with John Ciba, Bob came down to see us to do some record trades etc ... without  me and Bob knowing Dicky was filming the whole thing and looking back it was quite funny watching it back home, he was without doubt the ultimate guy in his passion for good music ! Bob then took me, Dicky and Tough Tony Janda (r.i.p ) to your place Rob then to his place - later he insisted on driving us in his rickety old car to a guys house - he said the neighberhood we had to walk through had gone down hill a bit (there had been a recent rise in shootings he added) when we got close to the place he got lost again a good laugh ! I only messaged him last week to cross check some things for one of my stories in the book ,i think he'd just about finished his contribution, sadly i fear that is lost too. I hope you are at peace now.

My full respect Bob and sincere thoughts to your family and friends.

Thanks, Peter,

Of course you must know that I didn't mean I don't appreciate all the great people here.  I wouldn't even be on this forum if that were the case.  I really appreciate how everyone here is so friendly and welcoming (especially to us North American "Non-Northern Scene" Soul fans).

It's just that I sort have lost a kindered spirit, in the sense that we were both from Chicago and both loved, especially, Chicago Soul so much.  I guess conversing with him and learning so much about Chicago Soul from his great interviews, filled a lot of my nostalgia needs.  He and his work brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.

As Shocked as everybody, spoke with him last week about a record I'd been after and he had got a coupe copies of. Really awful news, my condolences to his immediate family, and all his friends...

Just read this and absolutely stunned like everybody else.

Bob had an incredible appetite for knowledge and was prepared to share that with us all via this medium and his radio shows. His interviews with some of the known and often less known artists are testimony to his enthusiasm and complete passion for the music.

It is not an understatement to say he will be sorely missed.

A super knowledgeable guy I'm proud to call my friend. The fun we had at Soultrip in Chicago. Particularly with Bob's super dry humour with Bobby Bland's daughter. Don't ask!

Why leave us now pal....I need the Steelers phone number.

Never spoke to him, never met him. But always wanted to read what he had to say because it was always worth reading and I usually learnt something. Like a lot of us on this site that didn't actually know the man, I shall  miss him nonetheless.

My thoughts are with his family and friends, though I think all of us on here have in some small way been his friend anyway through our shared love of this music.

Unbelievable.... Thank you Bob for putting me onto so many tunes that I would never hear over here in the UK through your radio shows and your personal tips. For helping put the 'Soul' in Soul source and for having the good humour and wit to spar and banter with the entrenched viewpoints of people on a scene that must have seemed bizarre to say the least.

You added so much to my musical knowledge and you helped open the world of soul music up for me and others who were just dipping their toes into the slow sweet harmony soul that you loved so much. Your posts on here were always priority 'go to' posts to read and i will miss your vast contribution to the sanity and soulfulness of this site. I wish I'd met you in person. RIP Bob.

I have just come in from a few beers with friends and have seen this, I am totally wiped out by this, spoke to Bob regularly on all things soulful, stroppy at times, you bet, but no bullshit with this fella, knowledge beyond belief, taste, I am biased here, but right up my street, I owe this man so much for his advice and records he put me onto, some so good I have immediately tried to acquire, like this, which I know he told me was one of the greatest Sweet Soul records ever, Bob, totally irreplaceable to us Soul Fans

just in from a night out, checked on fb, couldnt believe it and am now so sad to find out this tragic is real.. lost for words really. dont remember which year bob joined soul source but since he had joined this place really became more informative and worthwhile for sure. as mike so rightly said - bob was a major part of this site. always had the the deepest respect for his knowledge, his help on infos and vinyl and liked his individual style big style. he sure wont be forgotten ever. whereever u are bob, be sure to turn up the volume loud - I know you will.

If the gone greats of our music have a table up there I am sure they will be happy to welcome you there amongst their company.

so so unreal, unfair and just not to be understood.

A real testament to his passion for our music is the amount of people who have nothing but good things to say about him.

Never met him but did chat through email a couple of times and sell him some tunes through Soul Source and ebay.

Sad day.

I'm in shock

Been dealing with Bob over all things group & sweet for a few years now this guy was one of the most informative and sharing SOUL

fans of all time I'm sure most of you reading this who had dealings with Bob know this already. His work & in getting recognition for 100.s of soul groups & artists of the past needs to be acknowledged and must go down in Black Music history , Bobs brain was like a computer and his thirst for knowledge of this music we all love was insatiable.

I'm very saddened over this news of Bobs passing the guy has turned me on to literally 100,s of amazing tunes and I'm Forever in Bobs debt for adding to my collection. I'm djing Wakefield tonight and will dedicate an early doors set to Bob and raise a glass to One of the best Soul fans of all time. His radio shows and chronicles of the artists are available online for all to enjoy & learn.

May I offer my condolences to all of his family from his UK adopted family

RIP Boba
