So if they are going to play crap, dull, UK Reggae like Del Davis, why not this, a brilliant vocal from Dave (Collins) Barker credited to The Charmers on UK Escort - is this a cover version of a soul number?

Nice version, cover of 'Follow Your Heart' by The Manhattans on Carnival.

Wasn't there a guy from down south who had moved up to the West Mids. I think he'd been around for a good few years and I'm sure he collected British, I used to see him around in the late 80s early 90s I think? I remember talking to him at The Blackhorse in Wolverhampton he reckoned he knew Dave Barker.

Any people know who I'm on about?

Also I remember being at a local night where someone played a Dave Barker track that was a mid tempo/crossover type thing if I remember right. I remember liking it at the time though it would have been the 90s again. Again any ideas?

Sorry Rob no idea, the nearest I can get, I discovered a record on the B side of a Dave Barker record - had it covered up for a while - then it started to get played and now it sells for £50+, it's called Give Him Up by First Generation...really nice.

I think thats the one Pete. The reason i have Dave Barker in my head is the dj (who I knew) had covered it up so i sneakly pulled the record of the turntable and saw the Dave Barker name on the other side, hence the connection in my head.

Cheers

It's on UK High Note, the Dave Barker side is called She Want It (which also came out on Escort)

:hatsoff2: HI ALL..... Yes it was me, the Black Horse Nights, come about from the closing down of the VIC in Wolverhampton another great venue that I believe Paul Harpin (HARPO) promoted, I was talking to the owners about holding a soul night, as I had no equipment so to speak of, I contacted PEP for help with the venture, what was going to be a couple of doo's turned into a top club, that got packed out, also the venue that Ted Massey got his regular DJ spots,

The Reggae scene was a passion for myself, and the start of my obsessive for collecting vinyl in 68, before the NORTHERN SOUL thing took over and at a time when reggae was getting to political, the skinhead era was over,

In the 9ts I started to attend some of the best reggae nights, through a close friend I was introduced to DAVE BARKER, who was a big star of the original days, he would toast over the records played, at the time I was hoping to start similar event in the midlands in the same way as the LONDON events, DAVE BARKER was to be one of the original guests, along with PAMA DICE, however this venture like many that I wanted to do sank,

I still would like to do some sort of collectors nights for both REGGAE & RARE SOUL where collectors played their records instead of named DJs, :g: DAVE K

:hatsoff2: HI ALL  SMALL WORLD! That would off been top record collector of reggae JIM SILES, Jim is a close friend & has introduce many people to the REGGAE SCENE who were to young to be on the original skinhead culture 68-70.

the BOUFOY ARMS is one of the places I DJ at, I think ASHER G "the rock steady daddy" did a few nights, they were great nights  I reckon you may no many people that I have met, when I went to London  NICE ONE DAVE K

:g: I've yet to meet them, the formula for this for this venture I took from a Sunday club in Norwich,  If it got a green light, my equipment is an authentic JA Sound System built by the late LINKSY of BRUM, he made sounds system for the COXONE system, Smiley Culture and so on it is bespoke to my needs and would sound great in a pub. your records sound totally different (trust me) all rare soul records sound much better & the more modern sounds are the way you would expect if you saw an artist live,

However one big problem is lifting for me & transport, that's the big hole in my plans, more info available, it's a big shame that I can't get Pete Smith & TOAD to help it would happen, ideal for a unique house party, DAVE K
