Don't know if anyone caught this but it's now on t'Interweb for all to see and, once again it's embarrasing.Tuesday morning Zoe Ball stood in for Chris Evans on his breakfast show and had Sharon Sullivan (Who?) teaching her how to "dance" Northern by giving her instructions over the phone. 2 munutes and 20 seconds of cringeworthiness and then the final shot is of all the studio staff getting their rocks off to Frankie Valli's "The Night"...... I'm sorry but that is the final nail in the Northern Soul coffin.    FFS

I was watching that mods and rockers thing on BBC4 the other night and it was interesting that as soon as it made the papers in 1964 and so-called 'mod' bands appeared in the charts the more discerning original mods jacked it all in. I'm starting to understand why.

I reckon it probably is pretty intimidating at northern nights for newcomers as opposed to regular nightclubs, for one thing we all dance on our own rather than with a group of friends, it's pretty quick (most of the time) so you need your wits about you, and all the people not dancing are standing around the outside watching the dancers. You're fairly exposed, especially if you are on your own on the floor. So maybe it's not the dancing itself but the whole way we go about it.

 

It's special and I love it.

It's at times like these I sip my red wine and thank f*uck I said no when the BBC wanted to come down and film These Old Shoes. There is no embarrassing clip of BBC wankers taking the p*ss out of something I and a few others thought was a bit special and enjoyed, to haunt me for the rest of my life.

A big thank you to the BBC researcher who lost patience with me repeatedly asking "Why do you want to come and film? What is the purpose of the programme you are making? What is the angle that you are going to take?" and said "is it just a load of old people dancing around to crap music then?"

I remember I was speaking to some guy at a party years ago, who had been to a do for the first time, and he told me he really hated it, the dancing, the vibe, and the music, oh and the drinks were expensive, which kinda left me with a blank expression, all I could say was along the lines of 'It's very special to me, and I love it.' so we parted company and I never spoke to him again...

Just watched it again and realised Zoe Ball actually attempts a backdrop just before it finishes!

I particularly like the geezer who just keeps one leg still and moves his other foot all over the place - hysterical! It certainly brightened up what is otherwise a gloomy morning here in Hull!

Speaking of one legged dancers, back in 1965 when Sam The Sham's Woolly Bully was being played in the clubs I frequented there was a special dance to it. Can't remember much about it but it did involve standing, think you had your arms sticking out and holding your hips, kicking your right leg out, as if you were kicking someone up the backside. There must have been more to it but I can't remember. But it was featured on Ready Steady Go, so might be on one of the videos that I recorded when they were shown again was it the 80s or 90s, courtesy of Dave Clark who owned them. However not one for the one legged Northern Soul dancers now.

 

What with all the publicity about our music and scene at the moment, much of which makes it a joke, I now say I like rare soul music, usually stops the conversation immediately.

I was reminded again how sacred this dancing is by a very passionate soul fan the other day, who kindly gave me an angle that I respect...up to a point. You know my feelings about dancing and this music. Had nobody bothered to share it back in the day one way or another, we wouldn't have it right now, still to enjoy. I agree at times even I feel I want it to be secret and not even discuss it with friends and family who don't understand. It's almost an embarrassment and struggle to engage with people who don't have a clue, but that's a little condescending. When it comes to the music...it's the real fans I like to chat with and feel moved with their stories past and present.  Whether I like it or not, things get re-invented for the right and wrong reasons. I have no control over that, but I am starting to know where to go now and have a respectable soulful engagement! 

 

I must admit out of all the conversations face to face I have had with non soulies, they have never been rood, condescending, patronising etc, indeed interested and curious, until I start talking about my recording session in Detroit with some of The Funk Brothers, then they go in to a trance and often change the subject. Now conversations on forums, that's a different kettle of fish. After been hacked to death on here with 'The One Show' saga, I realise I must keep a low profile about my dancing antics. Talking of which the BBC sent me a copy of the programme on DVD a couple of weeks ago. I need to straighten my shoulders more when I dance!

I was under the impression that Billy Smarts Circus went out of business years ago, how wrong was I, who gives a fig what you look like dancing, it's part of it sure but the fundamental most important aspect of the scene and it's been said a million times before is the music, all the rest of it is veneer, the common ground is the music as without that there would be no scene.

Exactly Mark. We are older and wiser now, but I looked a right one in 1974. I used to spray ladies gold hair colour in, get my clothes tailored and change buttons on existing pants to be diamond in style rather than plastic buttons they came with. People never said a thing to my face! Of course my wife made me throw all the cloths away plus me train set!

There mission statement is also very exciting with the formation of Dance crews and such like: Are you so hard to please and excite! Even bloody lovely Aperitifs at the end of the night! 

 

Northern Soul is most definitely a part of our cultural background, and has always been a part of Three Stroke Productions' genetics. So we were only too pleased, and proud to support the Northern Soul Dance Society, in their latest event that took place on the 24th of May 2012 in Anguillara - a small and wonderful city on the Bracciano Lake not far from Rome.

Not new to high quality Northern Soul dedicated events, the Soul O'Sessions Dance Crew, in collaboration with Sharon Sullivan Finch of the Danceology School of Leeds in the UK, organised a video shoot with the aim to releasing a professional Northern Soul dance tutorial DVD. Running several courses in her School, most of them dedicated to NorthernSoul Dance Society UK, forming an highly and successful NS school near Leeds, Sharon Finch was the perfect choice for such an ambitious project.

Sharon, along with the S.O'S. Dance Crew, and dancers, enjoyed an eventful workshop supported musically with DJ sets from some of the top Italian NS DJs on the scene today (Gabriele from R.I.T.C - Stefano from Nuts!Lite - Giorgio from Roma Modernist). The evening ended with aperitifs and drinks all round.
