he sort of knew as a record guy that the beat was getting faster at the torch

people were taking more speed than ever

thus, his northern soul section in his shop

I thought this was already soul history

and where Northern Soul as a term may have arisen

The Twisted Wheel and all those who attended in it's hey-day were a different/older generation and it & they have my full respect.

I would estimate that 75% of the folk that went cannot/do not/will not come to terms with "Northern".... fair enough, but i think they

should be left to get on with whatever style/genre makes them happy. Personally i was brought up on the early stuff, youth clubs,

local do's etc but when Northern came about in the early 70's that was it for me.... more "oomph" to it :)

Dave Godin originally used the term in 1968 about football fans coming down to London from up north not wanting the recent released funk type stuff and preferring the older more up tempo beat. He came to The Wheel in 1970 and did an article on the frantic dancing etc.

Half The Torch records were played originally at The Wheel and as for more oomph and the beat getting faster that had already happened at The Wheel.

You can't get much more faster than.

Sandi Sheldon,Alexandra Patten,Human Beinz,Mitch Ryder(various)That's What I Wanna Know, Too Late, Quitter Never Wins,Heavy Music,Angel Baby,Soul Time,More More Of Your Love,Determination,Investigate,Let The Good Times Roll,We Go Together,Were In This Thing Together,Ready Willing and Able,Let's Wade In The Water(vocal),Lay This Burdon Down,Tell Her.Taj Mahal ..Just to name a few sounds played there.

About a quarter of the tracks listed in the so called top 500 are tunes played at The Wheel.

As for The club that goes under The name of The Wheel today , from what I can gather plays a lot of  club soul i.e. stuff that would have been played in most soul clubs of that era rather than at The Wheel allniters.

If it works for them and I believe it does what's the problem, we can listen to later discoveries at other venues.

Why doesn't someone open The Torch,Wigan Casino,Blackpool Mecca there must be plenty of venues in Stoke,Wigan and Blackpool

Dave Godin was reckoned to give "Northern" it's name after venturing "up north" and hearing a more up-tempo style separate to the Wheel,

a bit of a shock to his system. Privately, i think Dave disapproved.

Ok

After the closure of the Twisted Wheel in 1971, Chris Burton took up Keith Minshull's suggestion Saturday northern soul all-nighters at The Torch, holding its first on 11 March 1972.[3]

How could the torch northern soul allnighters have any influence on Dave Godin's thoughts about the music at the wheel ?

Read the forward penned by Dave Godin himself

In the excellent book by Kieth Rylatt&Phil Scott

The story if Manchester's Twisted Wheel Club

If your going to quote historical facts

ie "

Pleases do some reasearch

As for the music policy at the @New Twisted Wheel Club

I personally love it I do not try and tell other people what dance to listen to and where to go

Enjoy what you do mate and leave others to enjoy what they do

No one is going to air brush anyone out

Love your Soul

But play new tunes dude !  If you don't introduce a few new records its gotta be finished for you soon

We have got 60 years of digging to do

its great fun, its not all about known monster rarities

its about the future of R&B

the good little ones and the rare ones, the collecting, finding the bargain cause you love it so much

not for ego, or for dj ing, but actually because you love vintage r&b music

just keep on collecting for yourself

peace

Hi gaz

Perhaps you might want to talk to my wife regarding my collecting habits. Presently I've got 1,046 CDs (that's over 26,000 tracks give or take some duplications...a few of those), consisting of Soul Music from the 60s and 70s, Northern, rare, classic, deep, r& b., all styles.

For over 30 years I swapped tapes of new sounds and oldies alike. still got 100s of tapes to transfer to CDs. I also buy/swap just about any 60s soul CD (some 70s) I find at the price I want to pay.....probably be 50,000 tracks  by year end.

Motown.........over 9,000 tracks...and that's not counting all the tracks on the Complete Motown sets......1959-1972.............thousand s there too.

So, not sure that me making an occasional visit to the Revised Wheel (and if I go on Sunday it will be my first visit to the new club) means that I somehow DON'T love Soul music.

Fair enough pal, you know your stuff so credit due, but didn't like your first response , a bit shit that. Not sure who your last paragraph above is aimed at?

Whose telling who what to dance or listen to??? I certainly enjoy what i do and wouldn't interfere with anyones personal choices
