.......only doing Sunday afternoons and no Friday nights at its new location?

Apologies if I have missed a previous post about this.

Hi Drew,

I can only get the 2nd and last Sunday of the month. I can't get the last Friday of the month as it is already taken by another promoter - the only way it may be possible is when it's a 5 week month.

So I may do some specials when I have a look at the calendar.

Because with Whitworth St being demolished, the Twisted Wheel club had to find a new home - just as it did when it moved from Brazenose St and it kept the same name. It moved to NQLive which was involved in the fatal fire and is now at Alter Ego. So really it is now Twisted Wheel but at Alter Ego and still playing the same Wheel back-catalogue tunes.

Hence, It's still called 'The Twisted Wheel'

The wheel was before my time but what puzzles me is that the wheel was mainly about new sounds. The late 80s nights at Whitworth street were also about new sounds (Butch etc). The Wheel Revival however is about a limited number of old tracks that were played at the late 60s early 70s wheel.

Is it just me or is that ethos at odds with what the Twisted Wheel was about?

Drew,

Know what you're saying, but the club was too important in some peoples lives to lose.

Byrney,

Yes, It is a Twisted Wheel Revival but that's what the people come in for - sounds from the 60's that they all know and danced to then and with over 200 in last Sunday - That's what they want. Not new sounds.
If we made it like 'The late 80s nights at Whitworth street were also about new sounds (Butch etc)  then it would become just another 'Northern Soul' night and they wouldn't know what was coming on next.

Thanks for that, so it's revival rather than a continuation of the the Twisted Wheel. Fair doos.

:hatsoff2: Hi All..... I think my little dig was at the never let die policy, yes the records were & are great, as a collector of UK release soul, a huge amount was played to fresh ears, also the Wheels policy was very much the same as the MOJO NIGHT OWL, ALSO THE PINK FLAMINGO, THE WHISKEY A-GO GO, TILES ALSO THE RAM JAM CLUB WAS MORE OF A BLACK MUSIC CLUB IN BRIXTON CATERING AT A WHIM FOR WHITE KIDS (MODS) THE TWISTED WHEEL HAD IT'S OWN ETHNIC MEMBERSHIP, BUT WAS NOT A BLACK MANS LOCATION AND IT'S POLICY COPIED THAT OF THE UK'S FIRST ALL-NIGHTER THE SCENE. APART FROM THE MARQUEE MOST CLOSED THEIR DOORS AND DID NOT OPERATE UNDER THE SAME NAME WHEN IT RE OPENED.

My remarks could have been used when the Wigan Casino started to let kids in the place, Now when you are a man of 23/4 to have a 13byear old girl come and ask if I would sell a wrap I got myself out & away, my life back then was all about youth sub culture, now I'm in my 6ts I can say the days of all these above clubs and more were a part of us growing up, would you go into a Derby & Joan  doo as a teenagers? the answer is no,

to conclude I do think you should let go as Wolverhampton had the CAT's & Stoke had the TORCH the names only used to promote a get together,....Is Ivor involved in any shape or Mark Abide??

Well that it for now if you are looking for old skool then look know further I fancy playing the "Buckled HUB",

to get a spot do I have to" twist" your arm, now that a good name "stop twisting my arm" CLUB  DAVE K

wherever the venue is  the Twisted wheel will go on because of the wheelers who get there ,the music is consistant and as Pete says thats exactly what the people who pay the entry fee expect , which in my opinion and as a DJ myself is the most important thing , i have seen /been to nights where the DJs are purely on ego trips , but not here "whatcha see is whatcha get " and the pure enthusiasm of Pete and the team is what we all strive for with our venues

So you're like wedding djs? just giving people what they want? At least you're honest I guess.

Each to their own of course, but I can't get past this scenario I have of one of your djs hearing an amazing record, firmly believing that it would have been played at the 60s Wheel, if it had been known, knowing it'd fit in perfectly with the Wheel sound, feeling pretty sure that the audience would like it even...

...but NOT playing it...and PLAYING 'I spy for the fbi' or 'billy's bag'!

I just cant get my head around that. No music lover should ever find themselves in that ridiculous situation!

:hatsoff2: Hi All ... If you cast your mind back a couple of years when the rumors turned into the pending demolishing of the WHEEL & other building in Whitworth street.. I was one of the first to offer my support and even gave some ideas of promoting the save the WHEEL, and I believe it could have been done, whatever was done was very low key and not any off the unoriginal wheel goers got in touch with me, now I like you conviction about the club, but ego tripping DJ's I am not if  you feel angry about this matter, you should question the patrons of your venture about how they lost the club, to conclude I really do support your venture, but it is a subject full of cavetti's not all good?? :shhh: DAVE K

Don't diss the Wheels policy without visiting the venue and seeing and listening for yourselves

The amount of folks still attending who visited the wheel when it first started at Brazenose St and it's later move to Whitworth Street and their memories of how the scene was at the beginning is a joy to experience

By some of the comments should other great clubs in and around the City lose the name when they move to other premises such as Manchester City when they left Main Road

The campaign to save the Wheel was anything but low key and most of the original Wheelers who attended regular towards the end of Whitworth Street and followed it in the move to NQ Live and Alter Ego got involved

There where one or two who maybe because of their Egos felt it necessary to have their own separate campaigns rather than one joint campaign, some of the same folks said the Club would die after it lost it's Whitworth Street premises....How wrong they where!

Can I say to anybody who maybe confused ...!!!....As I was too young to go to the original T.W....!!!.... I went firstly  to firstly Whitworth approx June 2010 -   of which I still miss dearly - But after all the petitions/support to try & make the site into a heritage site - (Too no avail) - unfortunately "Money talks" - Myself & friends have continued to support each venue as at least we still have somewhere for the music & to meet up...!!!....As much as I love the music & scene its also about the wonderful friendships Iv`e made on my journey.....:-D x

What you see is what you get the Wheel name lets you know what you are in for .Pete has never wavered about the music content so that's why people are there ,don't get me wrong I don't like 10% of the stuff what gets played by everyone who is spinning but generally its what I like .There is also the community of us 50/60 somethings who did go to Whitworth street we still like to get together . If some body walked into the club on the next Sunday meet and a none wheel sound was on the decks it would cause a bigger outcry than were having now .All the best to everybody I am getting ready for Bar Mojo in Doncaster for a few pints and some good tunes KTF   Mac

I know how difficult it is to have a Friday night but if at all possible I would always go for that as a choice because: - It gives me Saturday and Sunday to recover before I go back to work on a Monday. (Old I know)

As for the music and whether I have heard all of the tracks that were available at the time I can say that from 1968 onwards I had different priorities, family etc etc. So I can still hear tracks that were availble at the time and say I had not heard them before?

If the club moved again it would still be the Twisted Wheel because of the feeling of belonging when you see all of the fantastic huge family that are Wheelers'

i would hate to be classed as a "wedding dj " LOL , and always play something differant  along with classics  but again the policy should always be based on what the attendees want /demand , otherwise you can be left with that age old question " i wonder why that night closed ?", In any case Keep on Keeping on , every night should have "something special " that makes it  unique  and more importantly pleases the crowd

PS I was getting more money when i was a Wedding DJ !!!!!!

I can imagine it : someone plays charles sheffield...

"it's an outrage!"

"Yeah, I want to celebrate the days when we didn't know this by pretending it doesn't exist!"

"Me too, I miss the days when we didn't know this"

"Good tune though..."

"That's not the point"

"What is the point again?"

...next track comes on : Bill Cosby 'little ole man'...

"That's better..."

Should do a Placemate 7 revival the funk room at the top was amazing

The music policy in the second room at the Wheel is not as strict and it maybe worth approaching Pete Roberts with your idea..

He might dismiss it but then again he may consider it!

Wedding DJ's come on mate show some respect for the club, where it all began, without the Wheel there would be NO soul clubs nowadays NONE!

Regarding you're comment I'll reply the same as I did to dthedrug, if you went you would understand that tracks like you mention are and would be played in the smaller 6T's only room. There is stuff played in there that an expert such as yourself would probably of never of heard. The main room is Wheel back catalogue only, and is very well received by all of us who attend. You name me any other club who can get 100 in on a Sunday afternoon, never mind the 1040 I witnessed when Pete had the capacity at Whitworth St. The new venue can't accommodate such numbers but still gets pretty much full to capacity on a regular basis, whilst others are having to make their event free in to get 25 through the doors.

So I conclude in saying Pete Roberts must be doing something right, I'm sure he and the rest of us attendees want just to be left alone to enjoy the TWISTED WHEEL as it is.

Personally I've the greatest respect for the Original Twisted Wheel, they were playing newly discovered records and one of the clubs that shaped 'this thing of ours'. But I think it's fair to separate what you chaps are doing which is a revival night playing a limited playlist to a crowd who only want the limited number of records from their youth, from the original cutting edge soul and R&B club.

Simply yours is another nostalgia night but one that focuses purely on the Wheel, and why not - enjoy yourselves but your not doing what Eagle, Bellars, Phillips, Saxe etc did so a comparison doesn't work for me.

But best of luck, great if these revivals can rekindle friendships and memories.

:hatsoff2: HI ALL .. Sometimes our mouths open and words fall out like spew? meaningless crass insults from people who don't have a clue to the many aspects that make up the RARE SOUL SCENE, today I have been a victim of personal attacks, these so called soul bothers feel it is OK to attack an individual personal history, that said I feel that I must make this attack on myself a point of order for soul source to look at,

The attack on my hard upbringing & poor education, in particular my use of the written word was not in keeping with the individuals' standard and as such this decided that my offer to help in a small way "to save the WHEEL" was not up to much and a focus of fun, it has taken over 2 years to get a reply, by this failed fight to save the Wheel,

Also remarks about the misuse of chemicals make me odd and degenerate who should be outcast from his personal cause in protecting the TWISTED WHEEL CLUB, he fails to not acknowledge that the Wheel was closed in 1971 after a drugs raid, and it may be something that he chooses to ignore 90% of the Northern Soul scene were regular drug users, are they still using? well i'm not the person to ask, however his remarks on a public site are immature and can do more damage to any one who suffers a chronic relapsing condition, last year the site warned me about the subject , I believe that I have followed their request, but I say again the soul scene is a drug scene all that has change most people do more drinking, Alcohol is a big killer destroy relationships and wrecks the life of women and kids normally it is through violence, alcohol is also responsible for sexual crime against children, I am not a alcoholic so there is know question that I may of abused anyone, except people with big mouths,

To conclude this over the years I have help socially deprived people in Wolverhampton, I am a qualified youth & community work, I have numariose certificate & diplomas in chemical misuse & addiction, a subject that I have lectured on for diplomas' students, I'm a qualified post modern intercreative psychodynamic counsellor & counselling supervisor, I have represented over 400 people as a TUC qualified shop steward, represented my union at conference in Blackpool as a public speaker I have delivered  speeches to a 1000 strong audience, trained professional the police NHS Staff Social workers, being a member of the trades council, branch warden, also have a certificates in mountain walking a tutor to train people to become teachers in the community SPORTS COUNCIL Many times I have spoken to judges & JPs when representing clients, I have worked in and on film sets theatres television knowledge based sound & light engineer  so the issue of working with professional people is complete and utter nascence, from a individual who has failed, I am sure that I will meet him sometime and a full apology is a must from the man, to conclude no man warns me off attending clubs, I hold no malice, but in this situation I may have to,

I expect more respect fro him and his ilk?

Is there anywhere on SS (or other sites) where I can see some plays lists of old Wheel tunes.I'm interested to see which of the classic tunes I've know for what seems like ever belong to The Wheel plus I'd like to see some of the tunes that have got lost in the mists of time so would be new tunes to me.

As the originator of the the question I give my apologies to Pete Roberts for simply asking a question that has resulted in what I can only describe as several daft posts in response. Maybe I should have posted the question in Events and it might not have got so ridiculous. However, I feel moved to give my humble opinion in response to this and other arguments that rage on here.

I spend a great deal of time on SS reading the debates about OVO, old Vs new, returnees as opposed to those who never left, venues playing over played oldies as opposed to rare etc, etc. I learn a great deal from the debates and find much in everyone's opinions. What I don't get from the attitudes of some folk is their arrogance as to what people should do with their 'soul time'. We all know that there is a plethora of events; nights, weekenders, all nighters. We can pick and choose. Being from the Manchester area, when I don't want to hear the Wheel play list and I want to hear new (to me, cos it ain't new to all) soul music, I make the effort to go to Steve Cato's Different Strokes or Chris Morgan's ATOH. I get out and about when I can because I, like most people, have another life away from 'the scene' and most of my nearest and dearest haven't got a clue about this thing of ours. I am a humble admirer of those who do work hard to uncover and play new rare soul music, but there is a place in the 'soul world' for the tried and tested also. I went to the Peebles Weekender last year and loved hearing new sounds. The three people I was with however couldn't get their heads around DJs playing to empty dance floors (at times) because the records were so rare. So, what I am trying to say is, for crying out loud, just enjoy the music, go where your feet and ears take you and stop assuming that you are the guardians of this thing called soul!!!!!!

Kind regards.

(full of sunny afternoon red wine) Drew. :)

I agree 100% with your post especially the last statement, why everyone can't enjoy their type of soul music whatever their taste may be I find frustrating and annoying. I may be classed as being paranoid but I feel that the Wheel does come in for unfair criticism on here. Like you pointed out you merely asked a question, which never mentioned whether the Wheel should still be called the Wheel, or for that matter whet kind of music was played there. Straight away the Wheel knockers dive in. Sad really, like you point out whatever floats your boat just go with it, and enjoy it, but please to those it concerns, keep your opinions / advice to yourselves, especially when you do not attend.......

Not aimed at anyone, just a general point from someone who's never been to a Wheel do.

So there's a really popular club playing sounds that people know and sounds they expect to hear, but as usual this isn't good enough because those people aren't open minded enough to welcome new sounds.  Where have I heard all this before?  Forcing 70's and 80's music on people who need to be educated doesn't go down too well here.

Next thing some bright spark will be telling them they should be playing Modern Soul at The Wheel otherwise they are dinosaurs / out of touch / stuck in a timewarp etc.

OF COURSE THEY ARE STUCK IN A TIMEWARP, IT'S WHERE THEY WANT TO BE.  They want to play and dance to authentic Wheel records, not to what The Wheel might have played had it continued into the 21st century.  Leave 'em alone.

And as usual, you take it to another extreme.

no one is saying that they should play dubstep, boogie, funk or any style that they dont already play...just that deliberately limiting yourself to 40+ year old knowledge seems a bit bizarre, especially as such a wealth of similar music to what they played has been discovered since.

You cannot argue that it's reasonable to play 'fortune teller' but not 'this is for you my love' for a example, just because the latter wasnt played originally. They may play both, but it illustrates the point.

it's a false dichotomy that it's either pure nostalgia or progress into new genres, I've been playing nothing outside of 55-70 r&b for 15 years and find new things to play regularly and have 100s more I'd like...what are these people saying? That they dont want to hear them?

anyway, I've since learned that the Wheel actually isnt that religious about it's accuracy and aims for the spirit and sound of the original rather than just faithfully replicating playlists, so I apologise to those concerned for ranting and wish em good luck.

It always tickles me that a group from our little town (Cacton-on-Sea) played a couple of gigs at the Twisted Wheel - in December 1967.

I saw them live quite a few times. They were a great soul covers band - really talented individuals. Their early line up had singer, 2 guitars, piano and drums which gave a great sound.

They started out as the Marvin Lois Enterprise and then changed their name to the Shell when they got a recording contract with EMI. Sadly only one single was ever released - on the Parlophone label - which didn't reflect their R&B roots. It got some plays on the pirate radio ships but didn't even touch the mainstream charts.

By the time they played at the Wheel they had changed the line up, added brass section, organ etc. and become the Shell Shock Show. They were still very good but somehow lost a bit of their original individuality.

MB

I'm sure it won't appeal to folk on here - the Shell's one single release. But just try and imagine this lot attacking a set of Motown, Stax, Atlantic and what have you covers . . . . . . . .

I've not been to the Twisted Wheel since they were forced to move to the latest premises; but the DJ's always ensured that those who do attend can have a right good dance and that's what is important to most of us.

I can't see the policy of playing tunes that get people dancing changing because they are at a new venue. I wish then every success.

Right, for what it's worth here goes, The Wheel on sunday has launched a thousand other sunday soul sessions, it's due to the hard work of Dj's and quality records that keep it going, but not one and i mean NOT ONE has EVER compared to the wheel, for those that dig, moan and for those that don't get it, it's simple, great records and a fine set of people, THAT'S THE WHEEL, Bricks are unimportant, people and sounds really do matter, its a great club and as prev stated in another post, the 2nd room plays a fine mix of authentic 60's RnB,Ska, and general sounds that really work, Great records will always be that, great!!,

Today's soul fans have matured, its a meeting place, a drink in monroe's, a bite to eat, a dance, a drink, a good time!  Long live the wheel, Still the business twice a month.

The Twisted Wheel and all those who attended in it's hey-day were a different/older generation and it & they have my full respect.

I would estimate that 75% of the folk that went cannot/do not/will not come to terms with "Northern".... fair enough, but i think they

should be left to get on with whatever style/genre makes them happy. Personally i was brought up on the early stuff, youth clubs,

local do's etc but when Northern came about in the early 70's that was it for me.... more "oomph" to it :)

Dave Godin was reckoned to give "Northern" it's name after venturing "up north" and hearing a more up-tempo style separate to the Wheel,

a bit of a shock to his system. Privately, i think Dave disapproved.

Not as I understand it.

"Northern " was a name applied to records set aside at Soul City........punters from the North asking for Wheel sounds.....so Northern , originally, represents the music played at the Wheel (and other clubs)

The music I heard was Major Lance, Chuck Jackson, J.J. barnes, Jackie Lee etc....

Just don't want to see the home of Northern Soul airbrushed out

But play new tunes dude !  If you don't introduce a few new records its gotta be finished for you soon

We have got 60 years of digging to do

its great fun, its not all about known monster rarities

its about the future of R&B

the good little ones and the rare ones, the collecting, finding the bargain cause you love it so much

not for ego, or for dj ing, but actually because you love vintage r&b music

just keep on collecting for yourself

peace
