Guest Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Popped along to a local pub night running a NS night, accompanied by Brother in Law, who is not into Soul music at all. Predictable discussion about what constitutes "what a NS record is"..... Managed to give him some idea (I hope) by using my own theory, that there is no such thing as a NS record, only records played on the NS scene. But he accepted the general idea even by throwing names such as Helen Shapiro, Tom Jones, Paul Anka, Bobby Goldsboro, etc. But when this came on over the speakers........I was lost for any answer

It's shite and has nothing to do with soul music - northern or otherwise. Nice 1

Guest Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 A discussion with a few guys outside the pub ensued .....I'm reasonably wide ranging regarding my soul...but I drew a line at this.

Sceneman Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 bubblegum pop from the late 70s ,only ever heard it on pop radio like capitol played by tony blackburn
Guest Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) My first "disco" , Brown's in Moston, Manchester circa 1969 played it but the playlist was a mixture of soul, pop and "Greasers" stuff...which I happily please this 45 in details : Quick Joey Small (Run Joey Run)" (#25) / "(Poor Old) Mr. Jensen" -- Buddah 64–10/68 (UK No. 19)[1] Edited May 22, 2014 by Guest

Hooker1951 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Came out in the spring of 1969 fairground speedway record. 1
mid tempo Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Worst than shite peter. All the good stuff that never gets played coz of Top 500 is bad enough. What a waste oof 2/3mins Playing that....gaz. 1
Geoff Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 It was a bubblegum record from the late 60s, remember it at the time. Absolute rubbish imo, similar to the ghastly Simon Says. If this was played at a night purported to be a soul night I'm shocked. Was it the Wigan Casino pop era? I never went there so hard to judge but am amazed that things like Nine Times Out Of Ten were played. Did it sound good when everyone was "stimulated"? I was going to say thank goodness things are better now but a friend visited a certain club in the south east of England and he told me they played Joe 90. 1

By the way whatever happened to Jimmy Small?
Steve G Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Kasenetz - Katz the masters of Bubblegum…but utter crap.

I reckon you'd have to be on LSD to think this sounded good - Dave Evison ought to have been horsewhipped followed by a lengthy stay in a Siberian gulag for crimes against the Northern scene! 1
Guest in town Mikey Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I lasted 8 seconds of the clip. Only because I missed the stop button on 7 seconds.
Hooker1951 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Jimmy small weren't as quick as joey small he never got over the wall.
Godzilla Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Classic bubblegum tune. From the same production company as Christine Cooper - Heartaches Away My Boy too!
Scal Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Dave Evison also played stuff like: Lou Christie "Lightnin' Strikes" Tony Joe White "Polk Salad Annie" John Fred "Hey Bunny"...... this was at Wigan in the halcyon days when the oldies were played in the main room. Martin Ellis had gone.....draw your own conclusions! 1
Soulstu Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) Bloody hell! Quick Joey Small! I've got it somewhere on US Buddah - a mate (hah!) of mine offloaded it on me with a few others many years ago. I played it for a few bars and took it straight off - never again. How can that ever have been judged by the powers that be as a northern soul record? In that case, any record that has human beings on it counts as northern. Maybe it was played just before Dave Evison went for that long awaited ear syringing appointment. Twoshoes Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Heard this played about 6months ago in amongst one of the oddest sets I have heard at a Northern event, an odd mixture of 70's pop soul,Motown chart stuff etc,I'd tried to banish it from my memory as he also played something else far worse (yes it was that bad)which thankfully I can't remember
Orotava Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I hope not. It's shite and has nothing to do with soul music - northern or otherwise. Nice Actually, I think it has a very tenuous link to music of any kind. Absolutely bloody awful - I could only stomach 10 seconds... 1

Vanda Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I love Lou Christie's Lightnin strikes.... just saying , don't really care what other peeps think ;)

Guest Byrney Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Yes, it was.Well, Y'know... It was back in the 70s. Not as though there was much soul left to discover eh ;)
Guest Dirk Tiggler Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Has no place at NS night and I'm surprised someone tried to get away with it in these sophisticated times when there's clearer definitions. Back then almost anything went. Didn't have the vast number of records to choose from either? Ade
Ernie Andrews Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I was convinced I hear this at a soul night in Manchester or Wigan when I was younghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Iqfn_kXBXgk

Soulstu Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 polk salad anne was a floor filler at Keele too for evo. Polk Salad Annie was played out in Sheffield last night - didn't sound too out of place in the middle of a few RnB based records - certainly danceable. Not for me tho.

I was pretty taken aback to hear it as it used to get played at our local under 18s night 69/70 alongside mostly Tamla , Invictus and Reggae tunes. We've actually discussed this before on a thread in 2007.

Not for me tho. Haven't seen my youngest lad for a couple of days. Just checked his FB page and he's posted a photo of himself stood next to Tony Joe White outside a venue in Manchester tonight.

Kevinkent Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 1968. Friday nights at the Blisworth Hotel in Northants. Ultra violet lighting on the dancefloor that made the girls in their white skinny-rib tops look good but left you regretting your dandruff. Newcastle Brown so that you had a bottle when it all kicked off 'cos you thought you were hard. Quick Joey Small pounding from the speakers. Enjoyed it all at the time. - Kev

Mellorful Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 When Dave Evison played that terrible tune at the Casino was he on some special kind of medication at the time (prescription or otherwise)? Perhaps he was due in rehab at the time....... I think if I listened to the tune all the way through I might be needing some kind of medication to take away the pain.
Ernie Andrews Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 you know apparently Paul McCartney plays tambourine on the flip of this 45 - so its becoming sought after by Beatles fans - I sold one the other week for £55 Ive got a Red & White demo! So I wonder what that might go for. Where did you sell it?
