Sorry Mike, no offence but what rubbish this guy writes.

 

"a forgettable album entitled Jamaican Ska"

 

yes an album released by Atlantic in the UK which got more people into Ska music than any other until Trojan started issuing compilations.

 

he should try listening to the music first...the book he quotes, "Stir It Up", is a much better recommendation.

The article is a self-serving joke. Anyone focusing on Jamaican LP covers obviously has no clue about the music or the design aspects he is supposedly writing about. If the article focused on 45 labels, then it may have a little use.

about sound system wars.

It would not surprise if there are certain album covers which chart a social history of Jamaica.

However I cant see it too much in this article.

Given that all Jamaican music stems from Mento and much of it

has been concerned with local Jamaican issues from Blam Blam Gun Fever thru to songs

about sound system wars.

It would not surprise if there are certain album covers which chart a social history of Jamaica.

However I cant see it too much in this article.

 

There are, loads of them...State Of Emergency, Crisis Time, Gun Court Dub, Front Line etc etc...

First came across The Congo's on The Beat's 'Go-Feet' label, think Heart of the Congo's is a crackin' album as is Face the Music which also came out on Go-Feet. A recommended group of musicians in my opinion.

The "60s album" Ska All Mighty is actually a 90s compilation on Heartbeat records from the US!
