BrianB Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Glad you like it Russ. This film has been a very very delicate balance of being true to the essence of the scene without compromising any quality, whilst hoping to also appeal to a wider international audience. A tall order for a very British film. However, if ever a U.K. film captured the whole essence and experience of an incredible cultural scene, then I can think of no one better to have directed it then Elaine Constantine. She has my undying respect for managing to capture a piece of historical magic that happened in the North of England in the late 60s and early 70s which I think will be the template that future generations will look fondly upon and wished they'd been there. Like us. Can't wait to see it. Ian D Hi Ian What type of sound quality can we expect from the CD? Will it be on a par with Kent etc, or more like some of the older Goldmine/others quality levels? I know the master tapes will not be available for a lot of the tracks, but I am really looking forward to hearing The Tomangoes, Freddie Chavez, Rita and the Tiaras etc sound far better than the existing CDs containing those and other tracks. (This isn't a criticism of some CDs and their manufacturers/complilers, as to be fair, these CDs were the only way at that time that I, and I presume a lot of others, could ever hear some of our music's rarer or more expensive sounds).

It's generally down to whether we are supplied with masters from the original tapes or not. We always re-master everything anyway so there should be no issues on quality touch wood. In the event that we analyse a master we've had sent and find it's been a vinyl dub (an increasingly common practice these days), then we'll source as mint an original as we can find and re-master and re-build where necessary. I'll be checking the masters on CD2 of this, this week actually so fingers crossed! Ian D 1

Ian D Hi Ian, I have pre-ordered the CD edition from Amazon, but I am also interested in the 7" vinyl edition too - Amazon do not appear to have this available, so can you tell me where I will be able to purchase it from please? Will the vinyl edition be limited/numbered by any chance? Finally, a technical question about the film - would you happen to know if it has been filmed in high definition and is the sound Dolby Stereo or (fingers crossed) DTS 5.1? I can hardly wait to see it! Andrew

I'm pretty sure that the film will have been filmed in the highest quality possible and likewise the sound. In the meantime here's the info on the 7" Vinyl Box Set:- In one of the most anticipated releases of the year, Harmless are proud to announce that we will be issuing the soundtrack to the forthcoming film, “Northern Soul” directed by Elaine Constantine. Early viewings confirm that “Northern Soul” will be the most accurate portrayal yet of this legendary musical movement which started in the north of England in the late 1960s and has now spread around the world and become a huge international scene. The film is due to launch in the UK in October 2014 and there will be considerable mainstream media coverage following the recent TV coverage via The One Show on BBC1 and the Culture Show on BBC2. Since 7” vinyl remains at the epicenter of this 46 year old scene with the original records still establishing world-record prices in collecting circles, we felt duty bound to issue a very special edition of the soundtrack on 7” vinyl. We’ve specially licensed all the Northern Soul tracks from the soundtrack plus one bonus track for 14 x 7” discs, all in pic-sleeves featuring key scenes from the film, together with a specially commissioned 60 page hardback-bound book of carefully selected film stills which has been painstakingly edited and re-touched by Elaine Constantine, the director of ‘Northern Soul’. A perfect collector’s item from what will be one of the most distinctive films of recent times. So, that’s 14 x unique 7”vinyl singles and a 60 page hardback book collection of unique stills from a unique film all housed in a solid collectors heavy-duty box. To be treasured forever. Needless to say, these 14 discs present 28 of the greatest Northern Soul classics of all-time, many of which are making their UK release for the very first time. Every one of these tracks has been a floor-filler on the Northern Soul scene throughout its history and many of the original U.S. releases still command a huge value. In fact the cumulative value of all the original pressings in the set comes to an astounding £35,260 (as valued by John Manship in July 2014). This will be Harmless’ key release throughout 2014 and for those enthusiasts who like to smell the vinyl, well here it is! Guest in town Mikey Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 It's not compulsory to buy it from a non-UK registered (allegedly tax dodging) virtual seller, £78 at local indie record shop! I like this suggestion. If I go to Diverse in Newport, can they order the set Ian?
Ian Dewhirst Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I like this suggestion. If I go to Diverse in Newport, can they order the set Ian? Absolutely Mikey. Will be available from all good record stores as they say. Additionally I think that Amazon price will zonk right down shortly. A tremendous reaction after only a few hours, so all looking good! Certainly on a par with the Motown 7's boxset without the book, and I'm assuming these will be better quality. Is it a limited release, Ian? It's always difficult to gauge something like this. It's expensive to manufacture so the bean counters are very very careful. I suggested at least 2K (I'm always optimistic) but it looks like a 1.5 initial run with 1K spare parts. I don't think that's enough personally but, hey, what do I know? Ian D

Ian Dewhirst Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Interesting. The 'buy' button came on around 6 hours ago so already a lot of interest via Amazon..... Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 1,443 in Music (See Top 100 in Music) #11 in Music > R&B and Soul > Motown #31 in Music > R&B and Soul > Soul #34 in Music > Vinyl > Vinyl Album But how do you gauge potential demand? Richard's Motown 7" Vinyl Box Sets are probably the best thing to measure by thus far. But that's killer in-demand unreleased Motown with a built-in specialist audience. But, all 28 of these tracks are bonafide tested Northern classics with the benefit of an incredible film coming up and all the attendant PR and ballyhoo etc, etc. Killer package. Who wouldn't want one? So how many exports? How much indie demand in the UK? Will it translate to Japan? What about the U.S.A. with the Numero audience? Will the film get a pan European release and, if so, where? You know, very similar questions to when we're assessing a record's value, but just a different scale. Ian D
Jim G Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) People asking if it is limited release, not sure if you want it to be limited to profit as a collector in future years or are frightened of not getting one. I ordered mine 15 mins after Ians post, and hope it sells tens of thousands so we can all enjoy it and the artists families might get a few bob out of it. If you are in the "I hope it's limited" camp because you want it to be a collectors piece, you are not a soul fan in my book just a bragging collector. Edited July 22, 2014 by jim g
Ernie Andrews Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 A few nice unexpected surprises: John Harris, Rudy Love, Patrinell Staten, Royal Esquires etc. Otherwise as expected for a soundtrack of a film set in the Wigan era. When was the Royal Esquires first played?

We could hardly not do a vinyl collection for a film that's based on the beauty of the 7" single could we Steve? Also we're assuming that a lot of people may not have the £35,270 to buy the originals, yet may still want to listen to them on vinyl. Also there'll be plenty of people who'll want an authentic and legal set of 45s to celebrate the film to say nothing of the international audiences as these are cleared for the world. Well Peter, you know I am far too modest to say I am by far the best candidate, so feel free to do so on my behalf when you bump into Ian on one of your many superstar jaunts into that London town. And I have already booked same caravan for next year for Cleethorpes, so be nice to me.......

I may tease you, but I do take my hat off to you, Pity you aren't making enough to take on an enthusiastic young (ish) apprentice. That's probably the nicest thing that anyone's ever said about me Jocko! Thankyou. I work like a demon for a company called Demon and now I know why they got the name! These days I work around 300% harder then I ever have, for approximately 75% of what I used to earn, whilst paying out 35% more in overheads than I did in 2009. If that's not a recipe for looming disaster then I don't know what is. I'll swap you some freelance work for some sound financial advice. How does that sound? Ian D
Guest Roddy Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Ian, Here is some sound financial advice ! If your numbers are correct then Jock aint the guy for you as he is eating 35% more pizza than he has ever done, drinking 100% more Guinness and the caravan he has booked for Cleethorpes will have to be twice the size ! Ian you cant afford him (and just a short ps to jock you are far to old to be an apprentice but the government has plans to get the over 50's in training schemes)

Guest Byrney Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Cant disagree with you Jock - I feel really bloody miserable at the moment! LOL! I hate films with poor historical references! Just like Phooking Gladiator! How do you know it's in the film? There's quite a few in there that I understand are not in the film but on the CD I guess to give a wider perspective, that's a good thing IMO.

Im assuming it is - Why put it in the soundtrack if its not! - Theres loads from the era it purports to portray that they could use and get the rights too quite easily!

What do you mean by wider perspective - If your talking about musical differences on the scene then why not put something like Pop a groove Dance your ass off or Andre Maurice or Kim Tolliver IDKWFTDO they are around the same time!

Look back at the thread, some on the CD aren't on the soundtrack. Personally ill not make any assumptions until I've seen the purported historically incorrect film

Again guessing but by including some outside of the timeframe of the film it could show that Northern continued... Or could Be Elaine just likes them. There were some currentish plays on disc two but I think they've been pulled due to copyright etc. again back in the thread somewhere.

I genuinely don't know what you mean by this! and my previous reply could be way off the mark! ATB Steve
Ernie Andrews Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 sorry you were too quick for my typing Cheers!
Ernie Andrews Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 This is my point around Historical accuracy that could be confusing to new minds! Having current plays on the cd that have no reference to that timeframe. Its like watching a video of Blackpool FC winning the 1953 fa cup then adding bits from last season!
Popular Post Garethx Posted July 23, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) It would have been entirely possible to limit the soundtrack to one highly specific timeframe: let's say April 75 to November 1975. That would no doubt please the detail obsessives but you've got to remember that the audience is hopefully a wider one than just people who were on the scene then, or indeed are on the scene now. If the music were limited to what was hot in those specific months I'm sure people would point out that quite a lot of it was likely to be poor—if you look at playlists from any of the great nighters of the past you're going to see some great records, but also quite a lot of filler too—that's the nature of any upfront scene. It's only really in hindsight that any of us can build a more rounded view of any era on the scene. Cherish the best bits and leave the dross behind. That's the way it's always been. The music on this compilation has to serve more than one function. It simply cannot be both a perfect snapshot of a moment in time while also being representative of the very best in Northern Soul. NS music is the soundtrack, but it has to be used in a way which has narrative drive. Sam Dees "Lonely" is used in the soundtrack because of the way it adds foreboding and menace to a particular scene. You know and I know that it wasn't played at allnighters until Stafford in about 1984. Should it be replaced on the soundtrack with something that got fifteen minutes of fame at Wigan but which is essentially a poor record and which would not cast the scene in a good light? There are a few things on there which were very much Oldies by 1975 and wouldn't really have been cutting edge allnighter plays either at the time. Stuff like Freddie Chavez or Bob Relf deserve to be on there because I'm sure they'll sound great to people who've never heard them before. Edited July 23, 2014 by garethx 5
Ian Dewhirst Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I cant disagree with that Ian if you are someone starting on a journey but the majority of us are well along that path and I hope Im wrong but I feel your numbers of sales maybe low but as long as you don't lose money then all well & good. I look forward to the first person on here who says "Is it ok to play these out at a rare soul night?" I would LOVE to see a whole bunch of youngsters getting off on the film and then getting into vinyl with this set. I wish someone had provided a set of records like this when I was 15 and looking for a purpose in life! The 15 year old Steve would've too lol. You have to be conservative with sales predictions these days because the physical market is very fickle. Also I have access to the sales figures for just about everything so I know what the benchmarks are for the UK and have a pretty good idea on exports too. But you're right. I think this could do incredibly well if all goes well. However, as my boss keeps telling me, "gut feeling's not enough Ian. Just the facts please"! How long is a piece of string.......? Ian D 1
