Guest Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 (edited) Having spoken to you this weekend and got to know you a bit (other than our banter on here) I heard this today and thought of you! Thought you might like it! Curtis Liggins - What It Is What was the name of that record you bought off of Tina? I really liked that and true to the sieve head form I boast, I've forgotten it already! What does everyone else here think about this Curtis track? A real stunner isn't it - I've played it all afternoon LOL Edited July 18, 2006 by ♫ Soulgirl ♫
Tabs Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Curtis Liggins - What It Is What does everyone else here think about this Curtis track? A real stunner isn't it - I've played it all afternoon LOL I know people who really rate this but I'm afraid it doesn't do it for me. Some more info here. https://ozgood.typepad.com/a_damn_shame/music/index.html under the RARE Kansas City Funk n Soul section. Mick
Tabs Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Hmmmm.... I can't see anything there *shrug* It's 2/3rds down the page. But I've pasted in. RARE Kansas City Funk n Soul Big ups to my man DJ SuperWolf aka James Trotter a native of Miami, Fl who came to KC via New York and never left. All my knowledge of KC soul music comes from him. The first cut is hands down one of my fav funk/soul cuts ever. The Curtis Liggins Indication "What It Is" became a Northern Soul staple, in the mid-west mr. Liggins and his Indication were a regional success touring and releasing a handfull of singles and preparing a full length when a car accident cut the stars life short. This cut and Liggins vocal stylings owe worlds to another Curtis, Mr. Mayfield that is. But the bubbling bass in the background and the driving drums keep the pulse rollicking and keep the listner smiling and dancing. God Bless this track.
Guest Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 the bubbling bass in the background and the driving drums keep the pulse rollicking and keep the listner smiling and dancing. God Bless this track. I'll second that! Thanks for posting.
Guest Andy BB Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 That's brilliant! New to me. A combination of the newly termed genre "Style Council Soul" (my-favourite-sound) and "Funk n B" Cheers for that - and congratulations for managing to use my name as a thread title

I really liked that and true to the sieve head form I boast, I've forgotten it already! Twas Roy Robert I Know What To Do To Satisfy You on Tina Which apparently is an overplayed oldie according to some boring bald anorak who witnessed the purchase. I'll be overplaying it quite a lot more I expect. I'm sure you mean that one and not the 70s thing I bought from her - which I can't remember anyway.

Guest Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Yes, I am a Bournemouth girl but late 80's I was heavily into the rockin' scene and spent most weekends in London. I didn't realise there was a Bournemouth soul scene til 97, I haven't looked back since

Andy, I played this to you at the alldayer..... mulf Seems to turn up a fair bit, I paid well for it a few years ago as I hadn't seen it before and rather liked it. Its lost its shine for me for some reason but still a pretty good track. Reckon your price estimate must be about right. Must dig it out for another spin.
Corbett80 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Wotcha Stuart (Joel here) Yeah it is a bit messy but I found the more I heard it the more I liked it.......thought it was a bit crap the first time I heard it. Its got touches of the Impressions vocally..... Did they do anything else?
Guest Stuart T Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Wotcha Stuart (Joel here) Yeah it is a bit messy but I found the more I heard it the more I liked it.......thought it was a bit crap the first time I heard it. Its got touches of the Impressions vocally..... Did they do anything else? Alright Joel, pretty sure they did some other tracks completely in the funk vein. Did look into them once. Funny, I liked it immediately then went off it. I love CM and Chicago stuff but that wasn't what I thought of when I first heard it (although I can see where you're coming from). Wish I could find the other or similar version of the record, was on a white label 10 or 12" complete bootleg years ago done for the jazz dance scene, thats what I actually thought it was.
Soulsmith Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 And i clicked on this thread thinking it was a chance to have ago at Andy Well there was an awful rumour............started by Soul Girl.............that Andy BB.............wore the same shirt twice. I kid you not!
Guest Andy BB Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Mischief - Nice one, it was We the people - Making my daydream real. I must have been mullered! Mulf - Did you play that to me? Nice one. Couldn't remember. I must have been mullered! Soulsmith - Same shirt twice. It's true! I argued til I was blue in the face that it hadn't happened - even when confronted with what seemed like conclusive photographic evidence, and then slowly it dawned on me... I had indeed somehow managed to wear the same shirt twice. ...I must have been absolutely mullered!
mischief Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 imagine if a fellow soul sourcer had them pictures....
Guest Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 A Not too Keen on Curtis much bit messy for me I've listened to it again around 15 times today and I can't agree that it's messy. I hear fantastic, complimentary vocal deliveries coupled with a brilliant percussion and harmonies.
Guest uroffal Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Alright Joel, pretty sure they did some other tracks completely in the funk vein. Strange you should mention another or similar version of this as whenI first heard it two or three years ago it sounded really familiar and assumed it must've been played pre-1990, but I've no memory of it. Any idea who the 'other' version was by?
