JOE TORQUAY Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Hyperions Why You Wanna Treat Me Like You Do C/w Believe In Me NOTE: This is the RARE “WHY YOU WANNA TREAT ME LIKE YOU DO” miss spelled title missing the word “WAY” completely out. Fantastic Los Angeles Northern Soul that lay on my front room carpet after returning from a Los Angeles buying trip with 68 unissed Motown Acetates, Johnny Honeycutt, Four Tracks and many other top drawer tunes of the day after Simon Soussan let me into his recent haul. The focus of coarse was on the big hitters, but one visitor that day looked beyond the obvious, my memory is fading but it was either Gary Spencer, Steve Smith or Butch who purchased this 45 then an unknown. I hardly noticed it had passed through my hands, until within weeks it was a monster tune. As I overlooked it’s infectious quality, in it’s all too brief appraisal. Since then, decades have past and very very few copies have ever come my way, today it still stands and a hugely well received under-played oldie of genuine rarity. Listening today, if titles like The Originals “Baby Have Mercy On Me” were not piled up on my sofa - I would surely have asked a kings-ransom for this killer - back then perceived a one-off. This copy has some light surface marks but as you can hear it plays superbly - and as you can seen both labels are unblemished. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 688.00 Sisters Sledge Brand New Generation C/w Time Will Tell Another spoke in the perpetually spinning wheel of collecting Rare-Soul. 20 years ago this was an oddity, a curious piece from the desk of Marty Bryant, an independent 70s soul offering, giving up not one but two different genres that are currently so much in vogue. Top side is forceful Sister-FUNKER lifted by soaring horns, that lead the way into punchy highly pitch harmony vocals. A strong persistent dancer fitting perfectly into today’s well received and burgeoning Rare Soul Funk scene. Another scene that is currently on the up both sides of the Atlantic is the long-standing appreciation of Sweet Soul harmony, so witness these ladies doing-it-up-tight n’ lush. Again the horns bolster the production as a beseeching lead vocal lays bear her loyalty. Soothing harmony chorus from the sisters as the lead changes hands a couple of times as this recording ascends slowly but surely into soulful-bliss. Two damn awesome tunes - both of which have been waiting far too long time for their recognition as overlooked greats. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 160.00 Steptone Your Love Is Like The Rising Sun Vocal/instru. This week’s Sweet offering - is not only sensationally syrupy it’s a fabulous Soulful Stepper, presumably inspired by The Temptations From the surrounding areas of Detroit comes this “outskirts” Motor City vocal-group beauty out of Novi, Michigan. Who like their better known recordings on Fast Track & IX Chains, it’s Ossie Hobson & Leonard Jones taking the wheel to drive the creamy harmony over a lush horn-lifted arrangement. So very silky you could easily be forgiven for thinking this was “The Temps” themselves. I’m a little annoyed I didn’t taken this beauty to “Soul Essence” last Weekend, as this would have sat in my or anybody’s else’s set so snugly. Hard-To-Find and just so amicably Brilliant! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 131.00 Flora D. Way Out Baby C/w This weeks obscure Northern Soul R&B offering is a rare Chicago Sister-Shaker that was honored on the “Foxy R&B: Richard Stamz Chicago Blues” CD but as a 45 in this fine condition it is one very tough cookie to find. We can find a WWW auction copy anything above used and abused. So listen to a gal who is about to drill a hole in your head with her anguished screech out flanking Harold Burrage’s horn arrangement. The cocktail is an intoxicating urban R&B dancer of the most compelling kind, with Flora’s voice literally knocks you sideways before the robust sax-break takes the recording up yet another level. Check out it’s undeniable power full of persuasive qualities to ignite the floorspace. LOVE IT! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 213.00 Joe Hicks I Gotta Be Free C/w Don't It Make You Feel Funky The very RARE and highly coveted AGC # 2 release that utilizes # 1 issue “Don’t It Make You Feel Funky” as the flipside. So very rarely comes to market as the “I Gotta Be Free” as the a-side. Two thumpin’ Northern Soul juggernauts on one disc with enviable NS rarity kudos. Click the soundfile stand back and be prepared to be steamrollered by two California spring of 1968 runaway trucks! Condition is gleaming! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 742.00 Edited April 30, 2014 by JOE TORQUAY
JOE TORQUAY Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Village Sound These Windows It’s been an astonishing 6 years seen we sold a copy of the memorable Memphis monster. and this copy is FLAWLESS! Well upon hearing it again all of us will be thinking exactly the same..this needs a revival campaign. It’s a proper-Niter-tune; a frantic but controlled stomper powered by an exhilarating combination of horns and a rousing organ fueling real-deal Northern Soul enhanced even more by the use of shrill girl assisted chorus. Fabulous lengthy instrumental breaks and the blue-eyed vocalist carrying that essential “crack” in vocal that portrays “Soul” Wonderfully elusive and begging for REVIVAL !!!! Another disc from that “File” only collection we were lucky enough to secure.. vinyl and labels are impeccable, you may never see a better one. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 331.00 Notations You Should Know C/w Eleven O'clock My first love, without question is USA male vocal group harmony Northern Soul so when one of Soul most talented (if a little unsung) producers is on the job - you gotta sit up and take notice. Stan Vincent most famous for his “Ooh Baby” The Five Stairsteps hit. Had a way with guiding vocal groups through fulfilling orchestra productions. Let’s take the A-side first .. a total killer of a tune, sees The Notations rise to the challenge of Stan’s full orchestra arrangement with a Mike Terry styled baritone sax burping away at all the right moments punctuating skilfully served harmony vocals…for me this is a masterpiece that has been passed over, mainly due to RARITY! not many can boast this gorg-tune in their DJ boxes. But wait! There’s more, the flip is is only a note behind in quality, danceabilty and craft.. Take a listen to ” Eleven O’Clock” you will be wondering why you’ve never heard of it before.. it’s a stunning piece of work.. like all of Stan’s projects, it’s precise and so finely-forged. TWO great sides - one very elusive disc! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 349.00 Sandy Wynns The Touch Of Venus Eye-Candy from down-under. Especially picked for the growing band of collectors who like to own the Northern Soul true-classics in their most unusual form. An enduring classic dripping with class - Ed Cobb’s submission to Motown that only got as far as Patrice Holloway and a studio “lick it and see” version. Perhaps not “poppy” enough for a 1964 Motown release, but certainly way ahead of it’s time in terms of the fluid seamless dance production. Then Ed Cobb offered it to Edna Wright and a Northern Soul anthem was born. In this form you won’t need us or anyone else to confirm it’s serious rarity. Looks gorgeous, plays beautiful on that high quality Australian-vinyl and those Ozzie’s always bowl us over with their those creative label designs. A Head-turner … Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 358.00 Lee Roye Tears (nothing But Tears) C/w Who Am I There is no better vinyl-investment than Northern Soul true classics in Mint condition - this 45 is another capture from a collection that had no interest in anything but Blues. Everything else was filed in label order, and left alone. No signs of play until we released it from it’s sleeve not a blemish or any sign of aging to either label. This is perfection - the minus is because we are cautious to use the word MINT it is after all 46 years old. A New Yorker that rammed the floors of all the Northern Soul clubs of the 70s..and still to this day it is received with a round of applause.. could we ever tire of it.. Lee Roye himself has always been shrouded in mystery .. but a little investigation states it was initially credited to arranger TOM SELLERS until receiving a more commercially pleasing name. Some great credits this disc has too. Rudy Clark (songwriter suprene), Ralph Bailey (no stranger to crafting NS), Tom Sellers, Bert Keyes & Bob Elgin all pulled together by the production prowess of Jerry Katz.. little wonder this is just helluva tune! PS is Jerry Katz, a non-de-plume for Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz? “Quick Joey Small” tell us, I’m intrigued.. by all the mystery this 45 emits… Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 250.00 Maximilian The Snake A MOD anthem that is no easy find on it’s original USA Big Top release but as an immaculate 1961 UK Promo it really is insanely elusive. Maxfield Doyle Crook an inventive musician captures the essence of “Go-Go” with a mix of primitive electro & wailing Sax lightened up by a zinging xylophone effect to craft an instrumental from the 60s still entrenched in the sputnik-age of spacey instrumental. How memorable is this ear-worm that the 3rd generation of British MODS took to their heart and made a huge wanted tune. The beauty of this listing is so much wider than it’s ingenious Boo-Ga-Loo inducing dance qualities; To the avid British collector the sparkling condition of the rare DEMO may prove to much to pass by. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 161.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Tammaraw I Don't Want To Lose You C/w That's The Way Arthur Fenn’s former “Newday” cover up.. boy that man has taste… Me off course I’m not renown for DJing great modern-soul records - but this baby does sit in my DJ box because I think it’s an utterly top-quality tune, that has not had enough exposure. I’ve often played it in radio sets etc. so I feel pretty privileged to be able to auction this title and again try and highlight a record that should cross over to the Northern Soul rooms for even more plaudits. Do not take my word for it, click the soundfile now… It unleashes an hybrid of carefully constructed soul, laced with a jazz/funk style arrangement. The effect is stunning, so much so I first played it 15 minutes ago and I’ve dropped the arm on it 3 times in succession since. So very classy and made classier with a smokey lead vocal from Val Brown steep in character. This is a TUNE! “Propa” as “Dithers” so aptly put it.. But do not overlook the flipside is a highly-pitched girl-led (Jamie Randall) totally haunting ballad. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 173.00 Edwin Starr War C/w He Who Picks A Rose some of these later TMG 700s as DEMO copies are darn hard to find. As I’m sure avid British Motown hoarders will confirm. TMG 754 as a promo is one of those strange vinyl-anomalies that defy all logic as to why is it rarer than most-other 700’s. But according to our sales data, we have actually ad more copies of the fabled TMG 720 than this example. The a-side is of course a fine example of Norman Whitfield’s genius, that rocketed off Motown in a totally different direction when Mr. Whitfield’s ingenious & individual blending of Psychedelic Funk & Soul caught the public imagination. So to the flipside - same song that The Carstairs made a Northern Soul classic and a Golden Torch anthem and of course a reworking of Jimmy Ruffins current Northern Soul club-favourite. Oddly this side has received only sparse Northern Soul action, surprising considering the punch it packs! Total “Starr” style Northern Soul filled with the energy only Edwin can deliver! Two great sides - one rare PROMO - so to the condition - do carefully inspect the label scan particularly the center hole - the vinyl shards produced during the die-cut process are still hanging there - condition does not get much finer than that tell tale sign of recent stylus-virginity. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 201.00 Bud Harper Mr. Soul C/w Let Me Love You Recenty we have been most fortunate in having in the Twisted Wheel inspired “R N’ B Scene” magazines edition and launched by “Wheel Legend” Roger Eagle. Allegedly Roger was on the Duke / Peacock mailshot for new releases so perhaps the first copy played at that influential Club was Peacock 1939 . But we’re pretty sure other “Niters” of the period would have played it off the now coveted British Vocalion 1965 release. This 45 during the 60s became a Soul-Boys theme tune, as being a MOD/Soul-Boy was so aptly covered by the moniker “Mr. Soul”, it was soon recognized as a classic spin. Later of course the flipside “Let Me Love You” emerged as the Northern Soul spin of choice. Today before you it’s by far it’s most wanted form - Vocalion DEMO’s are damn difficult to find, but when it comes to one of the greatest Soul tunes ever released by Decca - you are talking records that just don’t leave collections once secured. Condition is impeccable; “Mr Soul” side has one very light blemish on the vinyl EX+. Flipside vinyl is Mint -. View the label scans a-side has a radio station file #. and a Decca 2.30 running time stamp. Flipside label is clean. Rarity? Well it’s the first DEMO we have listed in at least 15 years as we have no record of it on our database… and it’ll perhaps be another 15 years before we list another. Saturated with history, kudos and collectabilty. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 109.00 Cecil Lyde I'll Make It On My Own C/w Happy Feeling A deliciously rich early 80’s flipside that has had huge appreciation ion the modern room for decades now. Especially adored for it’s full compliment of trumpets, joined by a bevvy of purring girls with their own contribution. With Cecil’s expressive vocal convincing with it’s determination to “Make It On His Own” - clever tough to give those undredited ladies a verse all of their own. A touch that seals this record as something special. Fabulous dance tune, that avoids any of the disco cliches that polluted soul music productions of the period. Flip it over - for what Cecil chose as the lead side a slightly funkier approach that touches on the commercial atmosphere of it’s time. Al Hudson, Leon Haywood styled chucky-funk. Let’s jump back to the side chosen by the European Soulsters ..so very much better. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 212.00 Marvin L. Sims Get Off My Back C/w Danger Slept for far too long! I’ve personally been clobbering this convincing Chicago creature in recent times when that time in your set is ramped up so high you need the ultimate stomper to explode, to rubber-stamping your hour of turntable activity. This Charles Colbert production is about as fiery of NS gets; Mr. Colbert takes a leaf from Monk Higgins and slaps of the horns heavy n’ thick as Marvin L. snarls, Johnny Sayles style into a thumping Northern Soul muscled-up with all the ingredients a real-deal-stomper requires. It’s a mystery why this was not a Torch or Wigan Casino Monster although both clubs flirted with it. Sustained play would have lifted it high and clear of it’s competitors which in those heading times was a bustling vinyl-crowd of worthy candidates. We & especially me, think the time is now for this dance hall cyclops to take stage. It proper stuff, it’s potent and it so compelling. Deep Soul fans note a awesome gem lays hidden on the flip. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 110.00
Guest Bearsy Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 £110 for Marvin L Sims I had a feeling this would sell for over a ton so hats off to John he makes a common £30 record more than triple in price

NOTE: This is the RARE “WHY YOU WANNA TREAT ME LIKE YOU DO” miss spelled title missing the word “WAY” completely out. Correct title is "Why you wanna treat me the way you do". The misspelt title is rarer but not that much rarer than the correct one (IMO)

Dave Pinch Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 its a fact that people will buy a record coz they consider it cheap.....not coz they actually want or maybe even like the record 1
Guest east rob Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I agree, great record and rare. One on eBay a while back went for far more.
