Double helping of angry attitude driven Philadelphia Northern Soul.

The sides we lead with is currently making waves throughout the Northern Soul as a DJ choice when the room needs a good shake up! The partnership of Mike Lewis & Stuart Wiener famous with the NS crowd for many 60’s Philly creations..veer slightly off their normally smooth and easy style production with an angry raucous stomper that smacks you in the face ans the lead vocal gravel coated throat growls out the lyrics.

But in true Lewis/Wierner style the session is decorated with a high pitch Girl chorus, strengthened by a male vocal-group presence. Blaring horns weld it all together for a sensational slab of proper-Northern Soul that for decades was a neglected flipside.

The previous preferred choice for turntable outings was “Who So You Think You Are” which is every note as good (if not better), with an even stronger habitation of vocal group back up. Fabulous bass-vocal supporting girl group shrieks and deafening horns.

Two totally audacious recordings dripping strutting arrogance.

Marvelettes I'll Keep On Holding On C/w No Time For Tears

Lovely clean “Factory Sample” British TMG 518 in immaculate condition still living in it’s original birth-sleeve.

I’m struggling to find a flaw on this 1965 Motown classic that emerged as a All-Night club dance classic throughout the 60s with the magical-power to still have the same effect 49 years later.

Northern Soul classic, Motown girl-group perfection and in the standard of condition that will not require any future upgrading. Vinyl on both sides only reveals light paper-sleeve contact blemishes - and these are not easy to detect. both label & the birth-jacket are immaculate also.

Johnnie Hoyle What About Me C/w It Won't Be This Way Always

SO RARE!

Independent Nashville Northern Soul backed with a sheering aching Deep Soul ballad, with both sides emblazoned with an emphatic sister-vocal - almost recreating a male-falsetto feeling, comfortably cradled by a horn and a subtle hammond arrangement.

This is “Real” soul with a beautifully constructed mid-tempo dance stroller, every note as good as any “greats” that sit in this much-loved design. A shuffler of immense quality and style, as she pleads for answer for her neglect.

Flip it over and Johnnie displays “hurt” on another level, with an on-your-knees testament of love; again supported by Tennessee horns & hammond. The approach works perfectly as Ms. Hoyle serves up exquisite pain.

Not only a killer album offering up a fine-blending of FUNK, Vocal Group Northern Soul, slick Crossover dance-groove & some stunning Sweet Soul. We have taken a soundfile a cross-section of this 7 man gathering crisply honed versatility.

5 tracks with have lifted from the 8 tracks on offer.

The condition is as follows both labels are flawless, close inspection of the vinyl reveals light surface marks, light insignificant surface blemishes NONE of which transfer to the stylus. Check out the fine clean soundfile, it plays a strong clean excellent.

The COVER we have as always scanned both sides - front cover as was the habit in those days has received a neat “cellotape” strengthening around the top / bottom & spine (see scan) - back cover has a light water stain bottom right (see scan)

There is no need to stress the importance of this ultra-hunted album - as the sound-files and seldom seen status will do all the talking.

A LP Grail of momentous importance..

Billy Miranda You Could've Had A Good Thing Going C/w Count Your Teardrops

From the same guys who ran that intriguing East Coast label “Sound Of Soul” working out Brooklyn & Queens; Eddie, Robert & John E. Gray produced some fine ground-level Northern Soul in the shape of E. J. Chandler, Sandy Waddy etc.

But this is the “Gray” family’s triumph with BOTH sides giving up mighty Northern Soul winners that as of yet have never been re-issued or bootlegged. This 45s genuine rarity has kept it from the “Bad Boys” clutches, whilst it’s reputation has steadily swelled over the decades.

Top side is an amazing clone for “Roy Hamilton’s - Cracking Up Over You -” whether that be by design or just a coincidence, the recording shimmers with “Crackin’ Up” similarities making it so readily received by the dancer (not that the crowd ever hear this goodie) again rarity the main cause.

Flip it over for a tune that has also been held in high regard by those more dedicated collectors who never stop looking past the obvious, and obviously the Gray’s thought it worthy of an A-Side listing.. again BIg City vocal boomer.

BOTH sides are humongous vocal Northern Soul belters whichever one you play. Listen as Billy purrs, snarls & growls his way through both sides with consummate power and calm… so impressive.

Two great sides - one extremely highly regarded disc - for obvious reasons

J. J. Barnes Baby, Please Come Back Home C/w Easy Living

GROOVESVILLE BABY GROOVESVILLE.

Lifted from the legendary 1969 UK Stax album that gave birth to one of Northern Soul’s finest “Sweet Sherry” to this day ranks high of my short list of exit day tune for church. Such was it’s effect on me as a youngster attending “The Cats”

Having said that Don Davis’s “Groovesville” production-machine has literally 100s of stand-out soul recordings to it’s credit. The world talks of the “Motown Sound” but Don’s productions also had a unique sound all of it’s own - right up their just behind “Pied Piper” as my preferred “sound Of Detroit”.

Before you today are TWO fabulous examples of his work, this time with Detroit-Doyen J. J. Barnes who’s vocal lifts off like a train entering a tunnel, J. J. sounds off a warning of the treat that is with about to overwhelm - flip it over and J. J. again inspires with his sultry take on Melvin Davis’s soul-masterpiece earlier credited to the Holidays..

Two thoroughly tantalizing Detroit-Delight - The Sound of Groovesville nothing much compares.. to it.

This 1969 UK DEMO is a sparkling Mint minus throughout..

Maestro & Company Featuring Jay Poole I Love You C/w Funky Music (to Spank By)

Soul man Jay Poole this time a few miles away from his usual Westchester, Illinois recording haunts, as he aids Maestro & Company on the vocal of this Greenville, South Carolina child.

Two very strong soul sides covering two contrasting genres.

Topside we lead with is an heavenly soulful stepper, with Angel-like girl-backing lead the way for Jay Poole to penetrate your soul with his exquisite pleading. The subtle unobtrusive backing of gently caressed cymbals, the lovingly blown horns and swirling strings pad the sessions.

But just listen to those session ladies - wow they soar up and over the production taking the song and Mr. Poole’s being to another level .

KILLER MID-PACED STEPPER!

Flip it over and the gang get on up into FUNK mode…as Charles Madison flexes his diverse talents and brings the horns to front with “Kool” styled dance - the girls are still there but in a totally different mood as PMT kicks in and they feel the defiant groove perfectly.

Two forceful tunes from two very “in-vogue” rare soul genres of the moment..

G. Davis & R. Tyler Hold On Help Is On The Way

First spun by the legendary “Cats” DJ Blue Max “Millward” who used it as an introduction to his set before it took off big; achieving a wider appreciation @ Cleethorpes Pier/ Wigan Casino/ St. Ives etc.Today this New Orleans instrumental classic is leading the charge back into the Northern Soul instrumental sound - sparking in the last few months several requests for this oldie..and as if by fate one walks through the door.

So the “instrumental NS Sound” is back, after at least two decades of falling completely out of favour, until recently the non-vocal is back in vogue.

George Davis & Alvin Red Tyler turn in a masterclass of guitar picking reminiscent of Cal Green Los Angeles sessions as the duo pluck away with a mixture of blues/Jazz & Soul. The horns lifting it to another level..

Memories are made of this and how refreshing to hear it again..

A dancefloor favourite for decades but surprisingly never bootlegged…always a record you can drop into any set at anytime and be guaranteed the floor will not dwindle.. and one I find that allows a slightly obscurer vocal group rarity to comfortably slot right in behind it.

Another fine Detroit James Hendrix session with the invaluable skills of McKinley Jackson guiding the dance arrangement.

This is silky, solid Northern Soul from a source that consistently gave up finely tuned Motor City 60s Northern..

Jean Terrell Rising Cost Of Love C/w I Had To Fall In Love

From her coveted album “I Had To Fall In Love” comes this fabulous version of the sought-after Darrow Fletcher 45 on Atlantic; and just like Darrow’s prize, this version too is very tricky to snare as the 7”, as it’s again ONLY on the STOCK copy.

This seldom seen stocker is MINT - in every respect ,so take a clear listen to a lady who’s vocal took her to Motown top replace Diana Ross in the Supremes in 1970.

Jean vocal carries a truckload more soul - which took the Supremes away from their encroaching entrenchment into “Pop” as the new trio cut their crowning glory “Stoned Love”…

5 years later Jean was with A&M for an all too brief solo career. Her album is rightly considered one of the finest “Sister-Soul” solo albums of the 70s. As she joined Philly virtuoso Bobby Martin who along with Len Ron Hanks & Zane Grey craft a forceful fusion of funk, soul & jazz whilst lushly applying those Philly strings… a wondrous groove.

Awesome stuff and as this stock copy - annoyingly elusive!

Delbert And The Stewart Sensation Stewart's Sensation C/w How Far Can Our Love Go?

We like different:

.. and it seems most of our long term customers all love the weird wonderful things you can discover whilst digging below the surface of soul music.

The Delbert Stewart D.I.Y. Cincinnati, Ohio project is so delightfully primitive, that is the whole attraction of it’s being. Every week we try and make our selection of 15 as diverse as we possibly can. This weird one ticks all the boxes to be heard, it will no doubt polarize opinion as Delbert jumps from a hammond propelled funky jazzed-up vocal group dancer on one side - to a vocal harmony ballad on the other.

Funky side only has brief vocals introducing the band, then a banging hammond driven by a crazed keyboard player takes over.. wild to say the least.

Flip it over and it’s the side Delbert lead with locally - an off-key “Roshell Anderson” style deliver is supported by a shrill group echoing support. atmospheric setting is lifted again by a pedestrian but persistent hammond organ.

Both sides scream “independent” production but the charm and endeavor of this street-level enterprise shines through..

Comes in perfect condition along with it’s “Radio Station Response Post Card” that unfortunately for Delbert never got used..

Major Lance Um, Um , Um, Um, Um, Um + 5

British ONLY SIX track EP complete with unique laminated cover.

1963 was the year the innovative pioneer DJ Roger Eagle kicked off his now fabled “Twisted Wheel” all-nighters. With one of this EP’s tracks “Monkey Time” in 1964 lighting the way for what was to become an unparallelled NS admiration of this renowned Chicago Soul Man. As all his recordings over the coming years featured in British club sets.

This EP however throws up a few tracks NOT issued on a single in the UK or USA “Hitch Hike” “The Bird” “Keep On Loving You” never made 45. With Major Debut Okeh recording “Delilah” never enjoying an issue as a c7” in the USA.

overlooked is the last track side two “Keep On Loving You” a Curtis Mayfield project carries Northern Soul potential to this day.

So an EP with so much to offer - in fine clean condition - and bonus sleeve notes by the legendary WVON DJ E. Rodney Jones.

It’s got the lot.. 6 cool tracks, one “pop-art” kinky cover, historical sleeve notes and genuine rarity + fully 6 great recordings covering The Majors early years.

Eugene Remus You Never Miss A Good Thing (with Strings) C/w Gotta Have Your Lovbin'

An historical 45 - second release of this fledgling label, that was about to take the world by a storm!

Berry Gordy the persistent perfectionist went back to the studio 14th of September 1961 with right-hand-man Smokey Robinson; adding strings (like he did on a few rethinks the previous and first Motown release by The Satintones springs to mind.) on his productions - this improvement made no difference whatsoever, as this Motown 1001 45 sold “zilch” later becoming the highly-prize “with strings” trophy-piece.

The most difficult task whilst trying to gather up all the wicked variations Motown manufactured is getting these early street distributed 45s in acceptable condition. This offering has two clean labels - vinyl carries full-gloss a couple very light marks NOT affecting play.

Very, very hard to find in this tidy condition.

the delbert and the stewert sensation sold on ebay in feb for £137  , strange world of northern soul

 

i was glad to win it too, someone had offered it to me for $1500 (too much) but it is stupid rare. the one i won is not that clean. i can't believe i missed a copy for 12 pounds.

So with Jean Terrell, the  situation could have been, the seller buys it from from James Devlin's ebay sales 2 weeks before for £16+£1.50 postage, gives it to Mr Manship who sells it for £79.  Take off £19.75 for commission, your still left with a profit of £41.75, which aint bad for selling what we all know is a common record, even on an issue.

Does the `factory sample` sticker make up the difference??!!!

 

Here's some info / theories

 

The Promo Stickered record is usually when a record company has run out of the promo labelled records and starts sending out stickered stock copies for promo use. Its always an argument as to whether they are proper promo copies, - yes, anyone can put a sticker on a label, but most of the time you can tell whether the sticker is a new one that has been added at a later date than when it was meant to be...

 

 

They were sold to EMI workers who were able to buy them at a discounted price. To deter them from buying at this lower price and then selling them on for the full RRP, the 'Factory Sample' sticker was glued on.

 

why use a factory sample sticker ?

demo ? no because EMI made demo's for demonstration purposes

to be sold to staff ? then why not a staff copy not for re-sale sticker ?

to me the only logical explanation is quality control

pull one copy out in every 1,000 or whatever play it to make sure stampers are still good

once it's been played it's second hand so therefore probably sold to staff at discount

to me that don't make it any more desirable than a copy without a sticker

like i said just my opinion

we can put a man on the moon, split the atom even read genetic code

but no one knows for certain what these stickers are for  !  !  !

I know, but especially on Beatles records on Ebay, there's hundreds of them, I personally wouldn't call it a demo, I'd just say it has a sample sticker on the label and sell it as an issue

Yes indeed.

 

Also, it doesn't mean someone else could have got it for only one increment up (i.e. £23) either - the person who bid £12 may have had a maximum at, say, £500 or more sitting on it. You never find out unless you can be prepared to actually log on and bid.

 

Well done to the winner (if it did in fact sell) ... you were the only person who could be bothered to make an offer.
