What 20 year old is going to be able to spend £300 - £400 regularly on records,

Wish I was 20 years old, living at home, working full time and tipping me Mam a few quid for 'keep', I would have more disposable income for records than I do currently,

Posted

Who's to say all of them are?

Which goes to show how brittle your point is, who's to say anyone can or can't afford records, it was you that put all 20 year olds in the skint bracket

Posted

What 20 year old is going to be able to spend £300 - £400 regularly on records, and the daft £1-2k prices for popular stuff? The record price thing shuts them out of the ovo scene which in turn shuts them out of being 'taken seriously'.

Best thing for the guys to do (as mentioned) is start afresh with their own version of it all and not worry about us lot. And genuinely good luck to them all.

Hi Joel, cropped your post.Your question "What 20 year old etc".Isn't this where playing boots comes in.? The cost can be high for ovo.But playing boots is not taken seriously  - unless you poo poo ovo.

I went to an all nighter a few years back with friends, one who was dji'ng.He'd purchased a "big lad" recently and was going to drop it into his set.A tune that was quite different from what he was associated with at the time.

So what do you think happened about 90 mins before he was due on.? That's right a young dj stuck on the inferior boot to a lukewarm floor.

Thoughts.?

Posted

So you think there is enough 20 year olds out there into northern soul who can afford to spend that money on records regularly in order to jock on the UK soul scene? Maybe you're right.

Kev> I'm not saying they should play boots on the current scene, i'm saying they should start again and do it in their own way. How do you suggest they go about DJing on the scene as it stands currently in terms of records? I'm not saying I have the answers but f*ck knows how you get these records if your're young and don't have huge funds available to you (and fair enough Pete maybe they aren't all skint but it's still an outrageous cost these days) ? How do you get booked if people are saying you have to have the records to mix it up with the established DJs?

I'm just saying when I was 20 I was doing the same job I do now and in relative terms I had more money to spend then than I do now, just a pity I wasn't collecting records then,

If out of work, or up to the neck in debt then funding any hobby is difficult, regardless of age,

I know you're not saying they should Joel.I too, don't have the answers.Apart from tracking down more affordable tunes and creating your own buzz.

I agree Pete, but I suppose i'm just trying to say I can understand the frustration of being into something and wanting to be part of it but having a huge monetary hurdle to go up against. It just seems like a catch 22 for younger people getting into it - sort of takes the fun out of something that is supposed to be fun.

You're right, and some are doing that it seems which is great. Certainly we're lucky down in here in London to have the younger people into it doing exactly that, same in Manchester etc. But that is a case of where they are through the playlists creating their own part of the scene.

I guess it depends on where you are aiming to DJ and to whom perhaps?

That monetary hurdle is there in differing degrees for 99% of us.

Where I work there are 20 year olds on exactly the same money as me, I can guarantee with very few exceptions they all have much more left over than me after outgoings, drive nicer cars, and enjoy nicer holidays,

It all depends where on an individuals list of priorities they place original records, and what they are prepared to sacrifice in order to fund them,

I wanted a Ferrari when I was 20 and I still want a Ferrari now but I'm no closer to owning one now as I was then. Some people earn enough to own a Ferrari some don't so buy what you can afford and if you want that Ferrari then get a job that pays enough or save like mad as nothing is given to you in this life for free unless of course your born into money  :hatsoff2:

no not just come out of hibernation mate just bored.heres the thing,i would never ridicule anybody about there taste in soul.after the casino and st ives i became a pub manager so time away from work was scarce.went to ns nights when i could , ranthem in my pubs if they were big enough.quit the pubs and had more time on my hands.admittedly i lost touch a little.went to new rare soul nights, wasnt for me.nothing that was played made the hair on my neck stand up like the first time i heard sam dees lonly for you baby or dee dee sharps majestic voice on what kind of lady so i slipped back into my comfort zone.i do sometimes go to caliente in peterborough to listen to what they play but again in doesnt do it for me but again i would never ridicule them .so your childish post from you and your mate only proves a freind of mine rightly sed dont go on soulsources forom its full of pretentius bitter sad obnoxiois know all (know f*ck alls) you could ever wish to meet.last post on here from me ever no great loss you might say and i agree!

happy souling whatever your format

Just reciprocating your aggressive style of posting and your cop out approach of zzzzz ( now that is childish). You're always going to get some from the Nostalgia scene insulting others with a conflicting opinion, firing a blanket insult at members on this site but not having the balls to put forward an honest case. You fit that script by hurling an insult before exiting stage left in a swirl of chiffon. Ciao Ducky ;)

My thoughts are this, the scene as we know it will die ,it already is , OVO  is important to me it adds to the pleasure of listening / dancing to it, I understand the time and effort that has gone in to acquiring  it but I am old school ,Many folk don't give a toss if its proper or not,if a youngster comes in and sez to them self " I love this stuff " its the Music they love ,not the baggage and politics that come with it and why should they ,that time has gone ,encourage them and then let them sort there own scene, with out our old fashioned idea's

I wish I had half the amount of top quality 45's some of the younger generation have in their playbox today .

People like Henning ,Callum ,James Pogson ,Alfie and Davide to name only a fraction ,are not just buying ,owning and playing great records ,but are very passionate and knowledgeable individuals who can give most old DJ's the run around behind a set of decks .

It would be interessting to see a playlist from J. Pogson from ...let's say...3 years ago.

I'm 20 and do occasionally DJ, but I do so for fun every now and again. I do wonder sometimes if I could get more sets out and about at various venues, but to be honest I've never really pushed myself to promoters and have just done sets when invited to do so. I like to think I can play a decent set with good variety to suit venues.

Heres an example set list from when I played at the BB, it was very well recieved.

The Vibrations - I Took An Overdose
The Stagemasters - Baby I'm Here Just To Love You
Wade Flemmons - Jeanette
The Phrophets - I Got The Fever
Buddy McKnight - Everytime Pt1
The Dealers - You Got It
Lenis Guess - Just Ask Me
Los Canarious - Get On Your Knees
Darrow Fletcher - What Good Am I Without You
The Isley Brothers - Why When The Love Is Gone
Joe Simon - Just Like Yesterday
Dee Dee Sharp - What Kind Of Lady
Invictus - New Babe
The Players - Get Right
Bobby Patterson & The Mustangs - Sock Some Lovin At Me
Five Stairsteps & Cubie - Little Young Lover
The Fascinations - The Girls Are Out To Get You
Thersa Lindsey - Gotta Find A Way
The Parliaments - Dont Be Sore At Me
The Invincibles - That Love Of Mine
Bob Brady & The Con Chords - Everybody's Goin' To The Lovin
The Showstoppers - What Can A Man Do
The Radiants - Hold On
The Exits - Youve Got To Have Money
Jo Armistead - Feel An Urge Coming On
The Dell's - Wear It On Our Faces

Since then my collection has grown and I've picked up some good tunes:

Skull Snaps - My Hang Up Is You

Master Four - Love From The Far Far East

Compliments - Beware, Beware

Fred Paris - I'll Be Hanging On

Falcons - I'm A Fool I Must Love You

The Furys - Dream

etc etc obviously theres too many tracks to list...

I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but some young uns get a bit too hung up on the DJing and their "status" on the scene. Some young guys have amazing collections and are truly forward thinking, others arent. I've said it before I just can't see the point in the latter. I do the odd set for fun, but scooters are my main passion and they get prioritised.

If it was a carver of a big in-demand tune that is slightly different.

I think if you want to dj save your money for the monster no one has.

Very difficult nowadays.

Jordan, no disrespect mate but that kind of playlist is about as old hat as you can possibly get. Ditch copying the northern soul playlists from average clubs in the 70's and open your ears.

Do the young collectors out there aspire to be djing to their Dad's mates down the local conservative club, or do they want to be playing to people their own age in a decent club?

I think of lot of the alleged young soul dj's fancy the con club.

I don't agree. I quite liked that playlist, and if Jordan is playing these too a 'young' audience, they won't know half of them.  They'll be like newies.

But what makes him different to every other local do dj?

Pete,

For me, djing is an art. It's an extension of who you are. It's also a real privilege to be asked to play records out. I hate seeing it done badly. Why follow the crowd? if you collect oldies then great - but at least play with a bit of imagination.

Absolutely no point copying anyone. That's the main issue for me with the soul scene. Such a remarkable lack of originality. Very few people have the balls to do their own thing.

I think my set sits in the middle ground, theres some out right classics that everyones heard before and some under played gems in there. It's completely different reading a playlist sat at a computer, to actually hearing out loud!

I wouldn't suggest that I could compete with the top DJs, I know I cant. But, what I do do is for a bit of fun and it noramlly works. I played a set in a local contempary bar recently mainly 70's stuff to a young audience. That went down really well... But, I'm just learning, having a bit of fun and out to enjoy the music.

Don't change what your doing it has to be enjoyable so keep on enjoying yourself its the best way  :hatsoff2:

The big lad he bought was well known and booted, but the original is hard.Lets turn this on its head. Why should older dj's buy big originals for the chance of an up and coming dj to play the boot.? Why take that chance.?

A downward spiral looms.!!!

Double edged sword though - it's alright saying you should do your own thing, but what if your audience don't like your thing and they like the thing they've always liked!  Hence the repetitive playlists.

If a young soulie was djn on the scene they would already be aware of OVO &boots so when you put your arm around them to tell them the error of their ways their dads will probably tell you to go and do one back to Switzerland

There are young soulies playing boots and young spulies playing OVO.  Leave them to it they will find their way and let's stop wrapping them up in bubble wrap and telling them what to do its their lives let them crack on and find their own way.

Lets remember there is old people playing boots on the scene its their choice just like the kids have a choice :hatsoff2:

hi mate

i'm an absolute supporter of Young People coming but i slowly get what is the difference between some younger guys in the uk and the ones in the rest of europe.

to be honest the set you played wouldn't Keep me dancing as there is no surprise, even for me as a middle aged Youngster from switzerland. i give you the advance, but ist just my opinion..dont want to offend you.... to dig a bit deeper. there are so many great tunes around that are overplayed. if you are interested you are invited to drop me a mail and i can suggest you some if you wanna tell what you are after. just an idea.

hi mate

i'm an absolute supporter of Young People coming but i slowly get what is the difference between some younger guys in the uk and the ones in the rest of europe.

to be honest the set you played wouldn't Keep me dancing as there is no surprise, even for me as a middle aged Youngster from switzerland. i give you the advance, but ist just my opinion..dont want to offend you.... to dig a bit deeper. there are so many great tunes around that are overplayed. if you are interested you are invited to drop me a mail and i can suggest you some if you wanna tell what you are after. just an idea.

Mate, if you were a Toblerone would you eat yourself?? :)
